trumpet player recently picked up french horn and have been struggling with tone. will definitely try this!
Thank you Laurie (Did I spell that right?)! I'm worried about my tine in my middle school band because my teacher is super strict about tone quality. I'll try this while playing and hope it makes all the difference. Once again, THANK YOU!!!

but it usually mean's you have tension on your lips. I sometimes have that problem and my private lesson teacher (Elizabeth Upton) say's that it's usually tension on your lips so she makes me blow on the back of my mouthpiece.

dats awesome!
Help, I sounded really great my first year and this year I sound really bad! I don’t know if it’s psychological (I started having bad self confidence issues lately) or if I somehow lost my tone. It’s sounds muffled and forced and I can’t get rid of it. My band director keeps telling me my tone is bad but won’t tell me why. I’ve tried almost everything.

(I'm not a great French hornist, I started like a month or 2 ago) but if it is muffled you probably need to move your hand in the Bell to the top right ish and open it more, if it is forced use less air I guess (remember I'm not a pro so don't cry if it don't work XD)

well i can say that you still sound good but i'm assuming that you lost your self-esteem with the horn. Just trust yourself and be confident. Just do the long tones it shows on the video and boom your tone will be good as normal or better.

Not that anyone cares, but two years later I can say that it was a combination of air support, hand being to far in the bell, and my chin flying up which was rolling my lip in. Also I didn’t sound great my first year and I still don’t but my tone has improved a lot by being more confident and fixing those issues with the help of private lessons.

Does anyone know a breathing exercise that can help me breath less between notes and have longer phrases?
@cosmicsubliminals7064

Take a large breath in for 8, hold for 4, and then sip in small amounts of air 8 times. This is to get to almost maximum lung capacity and then you are sipping to get the rest. Then breathe out all of your air in 8 counts, and make a hissing sound for another 8. The hissing will get rid of all the extra air you missed. After the hiss breathe back in and catch your breath. It is normal to cough and such, but this breathing exercise is what I used to do in marching band and it's fantastic.

A lot matters on your horn. If you have a horn like you rented in the 6th grade, you will never get that sound. EVER.

Alex Playz oh yeah I had the same problem for awhile. Play each note almost like you're singing it but not using your voice and keep practicing the stuff in this video. My sound was bad for a good amount of time and it still isn't perfect but I'm learning as well.

calm down guys. Give it time. It takes patience. I usually do this for an hour every day for 7 years of my life playing the horn. I'm being honest. I'm 17 so yea don't be complaining. You'll see the final results, but you still to do them no matter what, and if you don't want to then the french horn is not for you>
