I had constant issues and errors trying to get 256 colours to work in windows 95, check that you're getting the exact driver shown in the video (you might need to click show all devices). I also worked out that virtualbox 7 assigns 40MB of video RAM as a minimum, if you go into VM settings and reduce this to 14MB it works fine.

I am getting this weird error saying "An error has occurred in you program. To keep working anyway, click ignore and save your work in a new file. Quit this program, click Close. You will lose you information you entered since your last Save." What shoud I do?

Not working for me in Win 98. New color options are present in the menu but when restarted, it says "There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect, or the current settings do not work with your hardware." and does not apply the changes.

Bless you for that ISO, every link to that floppy image from the other video had the incorrect contents or the contents were corrupted beyond recognition.

And the VM just dies on its own.

if your on virtualbox, clone it. for me it worked. you don't have to setup windows all again.

Love this software but seems that when you set the video memory over 64gb it causes the VM to crash. I run mine at 48 just for comfort but I have pushed it to 50gb or so. Then again maybe it's just something I'm doing wrong so feel free to try it with the video memory at 64gb+, maybe you'll get better results. All that aside I'll gladly stick with with the 256 colors so I'm not too upset about it.

Thank you!!!!!! I had everything set and ready to go but could't seem to figure out why my VM was crashing after I updated the graphic driver. Spent 2 hours, re watching videos and still could not understand what was going on, until i read your comment. Reduced the dedicated Vram to 48 and now I can play Exile haha Thanks again!

Well shit. I did what was shown in the video AND reduced the VRAM usage to 48MB, but my Win98SE VM just crashes when I try to use 256 colors...

Quick Reminder for everyone: These old versions of Windows require you to hit shut down before restarting. Always do that when you need to restart from the desktop to avoid weird stuff happening.

This is an old comment but on 95 to ME, holding the shift key then hitting restart will throw it into full reboot mode, which is the same as shutting down but it turns it back on while also applying any changes a normal shutdown would do.

I put it on Windows 98 SE and it gave me a black screen then I reset and it got stuck on the loading screen with the logo.

Not working for me on ME. I install the driver, restart and it crashes, boots to a message that says the Driver isn't working correctly and shows me display properties automatically, no setting I change works. Crashes, boots to the screen asking if I want Safe Mode. No luck with any of these drivers on KZread,.

whenever i change the color palette and restart, my VM crashes to desktop and doesn't apply the settings edit: give your VM 32mb of video memory (works on windows 98, not tested for 95)

None of that worked, windows 98 keeps telling to restart the VM, 20 restarts and 5 crashes later I still can't get 256 colors to work nor higher resolutiones.

I love how when I unpacked the rar file the iso wen to the section of my windows 10 downloads labeled "A long time ago"

just get vmware if you install the vmware tools on your vmware virtual machine

Went through all steps until about 4:55 - when I restart the screen is pure black. (Windows 98 SE on win7 host 1280x1024 host resolution)

No you don't have to do any of that, just go into the VM's settings and change the video memory to 32MB or 64MB

I only get a 2 popup error that makes me unable to open up properties again with one of them stating: Rundll32 An error has occurred in your program. i have 2 machines runs windows 95 It worked on the first machine, but when I installed it on the second machine, it always gave the same error. By the way, it gave the same error as you mentioned on the first machine, but somehow it happened now, this is my 4th try and I hope it works. When I click close, every applications shuts down and the screen settings cannot be accessed in any way. When I restart it, it gives a black screen and nothing. I've discovered what was the problem. After installing that driver it gives you options 16-bit, 256 colors and high color 16-bit. Choose high color 16-bit and restart your Windows 98. After that you should have other two options high color 24-bit and high color 32-bit. Now you can choose high color 32-bit and that's it. If it doesn't give you those 2 options then delete your VirtualBox, save your machines on some folder and install VirtualBox version 4.3.28 or 4.3.40. After that put your machines back to your VirtualBox folder and install Windows98. After that do the thing I wrote up there and you should have high color 32-bit. Enjoy!

If you get a rundll32 error just restart the vm (from Windows 95/98/whatever, not VirtualBox reset). Also somehow this helped get better sound.

okay i gotta question, ive been stumped for days,im trying to play warlords 3 on either windows 95 98 or even 2000, the cd has its own audio, but its kinda finicky, is there anyway to fix that? i know i did it once and i think i had to intall realtek 97 driver to get it to work but for some reason its not working now, is it possible i need an older Virtbox version??

Had the same problem. The easiest way to fix it is install it on VMware Player, not VirtualBox.

Mine isn't working for me unfortunately! I am not getting the D: drive popup for the Vbe9x or uni to show. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Any thoughts on what I should do? I downloaded the file onto a CD from my updated Mac, and then popped that CD into my 1998 Dell.

If you get the rundll error turn off the vm and then turn it back on then if you get the invalid disk error take the iso out then press a key and it shood work.

I got the 32-bit color on Windows Powered in VMware Workstation 14 Player

2:36 Do not click NO click YES then select display driver and keep the default selected click okay and you will have the higher res

Doesn't work, I get the driver to install and I can select 256 colors, but upon restarting it says there's a problem with the display driver settings and needs to revert back to 16 colors. Tried 3 different times and yielded same result every time. If you're here in 2021, skip this tutorial.

You CAN install VirtualBox Guest Additions on Windows Powered, like on 2000 because Windows 2000 uses NT

It worked for about 2 seconds then got a black screen with a flashing curser. what should I do?

Why would you do it this way? Don't the VirtualBox Additions already include the video driver? You'd also get adaptive resolution (resolution will change to your virtual machine's exact window size everytime you change it) and better mouse functionality too. Just use that i'd say, it's in the top menu bar and it gets attached as a CD-ROM to the virtual OS

It's sad that Windows 2000 was the last and only version of Windows 9X that actually worked (guest additions, color works, internet works when set up, etc.)

Windows 2000 was an NT kernel not a dos Kernel like Windows 9X. It was intended for professional and server use. Windows ME is a re-build of Windows 98 SE.

Okay. Got 256 colours on Windows 95 with about 1152x864 resolution. Two rundll32 errors occurred. Got 32-bit colour on Windows 98 with 1280x1024 resolution. All without a rundll32 error. Update: Got 32-bit colour on Windows 95 with 1280x1024 resolution with only one rundll32 error. Got the exact same on Windows Millennium Edition.

@@coindog6336 Then there is something wrong with the display cpl file, you might need to either get another iso that has a working control panel, or you might need to reinstall it again. If you reinstall it and it still doesn't work, then there's something wrong with control panel from the ISO. Also another solution is to still restart it and see if it still works.

Wouldn't recommend installing it on 98 SE. Every time I've tried it, it will go to a black screen and close the VM. Reinstalled 98 SE, shut down instead of restarting, increased video memory to 64 MB. No go. Install Scitech Display Drivers. Way easier and less hassle getting 256 colors.

lol thanks for that, i used scitech display drivers ISO on a windows 98 guest machine and changed to 256 colors. Also changed the video memory to 128MB for precaution (VirtualBox)
