How to get 2000ºF Solar Power
Convert a junk TV into a 2000ºF solar cooker. Here's a technique for hacking a 4 foot mega magnifying lens out of your old TV, and some of the things you can do with it!

Project Inspired By:
fencekid • FREE Fresnel Lens and ...
My "Solar Scorcher" project was originally inspired by Dan Rojas of GreenPowerScience: • Fresnel lens GIANT BIG... (Fresnel Lens Giant "Big Daddy")
Project History & More Info:
These TV's are old, extremely heavy, and are breaking down on people everywhere. They usually cost more to fix than they could be sold for, so people are begging you to come take them away for free!
I usually find mine on the classified ads under the "free" section, but they are also common on the sides of streets and alleyways where people have left them for trash.
PLEASE NOTE: These lenses are found in "rear-projection" televisions and not all are the same. Some are discolored, and some concentrate to a beam rather than a point. The particular screen I found was a crystal clear acrylic lens that focused to a point. It may have been luck that I found it on my first try, because 3 TV's after that all had lesser grade lenses, but still produced enough heat to melt zinc. Just FYI! You can also see • Different Fresnel Lens... for examples of these different lenses.
It was brought to my attention that Kipkay did a project like this a couple of years ago that he called the "Solar Death Ray". It's probably where FenceKid got the idea, which in turn, inspired me. Check out his awesome video: • Solar Death Ray vs. iPod

Nope, the sole design criteria was to use sunlight to bake a cupcake, the box lined with foil was a primer and most everyone else stuck with that

Look through your local classifieds. Lots of times people will just give stuff away, so they don't have to go through the hassle of shipping it off themselves. I've gotten a couple of broken down cars for parts that way.

Mate, you are a legend. I was dropping things at our local recycling shop and someone just dropped off an old projection TV. I run a local stargazing business and am looking to add some things of interest for daytime shows for schools. You're right - these TVs are heavy, but I couldn't wait to get it home and start extracting the Fresnel lens, which I did just as the sun set. Came out easily and I can't wait to try it tomorrow. The next step is the frame - I will use your design and just looked at the video - wonderful. Well explained and should be good fun putting it together.
Good effort Eric! I did luck out with the first one being crystal clear and focusing to a point. Later TV's I got were all different. I don't know how to tell which TV's have which lenses. Out of 5 TV's I got 2 lenses I was really happy with. The other ones are OK, but not exceptional.
I'm thinking it would be rather neat to focus it on a closed container of water, with a hose leading the steam away to a fan (like an old computer fan). That would basically make it a souped up solar generator and I bet you can get a fair amount of juice out of that. Perhaps a future project?
i found one about a half mile away from home the other day, couldn't get a truck, so i PUSHED it home.

Thank you! It's important to note I set the camera up to watch, and I look in the camera screen, not directly at the light. Thanks for the safety concerns .. they are valid!
I made this thing it was easy. I was very excited about this and had plans to use it as a solar forge. There was a pile of TVs in the junk yard. One of them was a projection tv. Unfortunately the lense is not only opaque but the beam is focused in a line. The temperature is 300-360 degrees. However, it is not a failure. The tv came with a sheet of dark grey plastic, and the beam from the lense is the perfect temperature for quickly softening the plastic so that I can shape it into anything I like- I used it to make a fine sheath for my diving knife. It does not burn the plastic like fire does, and because it is solar the heat penetrates the inside of opaque plastic heating the whole piece equally inside and out like a microwave. Very impressive way to quickly heat plastic to molding temp.
This was always my favorite project of his. What an amazing and outstanding piece of free energy.
Thank you! :) I don't know when I'll get a chance to play with the TEC and TEG modules you're talking about (I have a lot of projects I want to do first) but I am intrigued by your enthusiasm. Perhaps if you have a video I can watch showing what they are and how they work?

Make sure you wear eye protection people especially for fresnel lens. Even for magnifying glasses you should wear eye protection, that small dot of light can effect your eyesight over time as you'll notice that the dot of light burns an image onto your eye. So really you should wear a welders mask when using the frenel lens.

If you have a spring cleanup in your area go drive around. Take a phillips and flat screwdriver (or cordless drill) and you can open one of these up in about 10 minutes to get what you need and not have to worry about discarding the shell of the tv. In the last month I have picked up about 10 of these lenses in my area. I grabbed all the optics too, the color from the lenses are good for over flashlights for the kids and that lense assembly you took apart, if you turn on the flashlight on your phone and put that in front of it you can get a heck of a spot light out of it. Good luck!

I just took apart my 15 year old rear projection TV apart, which as downstairs in my now updated totally awesome 4K UHD projector in my theater. I did the same as you, I fresnel lens and also took apart all three projector tubes to get the magnify glasses. I can reach temps up to 2500° with the fresnel lens. I use it for outdoor cooking and also to get a bonfire started before that huge yellow ball of fire sets for the night sky. Lol

Calvin Phelps ha ha, yeah but you could defocus the lens a bit like he did in the video to "Spread" the heat out and lower it. Btw, I was thinking about this again and why wouldn't it be possible to power a steam engine with this? Couldn't you build a cast iron boiler and focus a couple of these lenses at it to get it to produce steam and run an engine hooked up to a generator? Someone needs to try this, we already do it on larger scales (see the solar array in Arizona).

I wonder what would happen if you used the solar scorcher into the metal melting foundry. You would need to remake the foundry without the hair drier, but if you filled the rest with Isopropyl Alcohol, you could potentially get its max temperature higher than normal charcoal, which would be useful in casting other items. For example, steel, bronze, or iron. (Provided it actually maintains this temperature)

People were throwing these rear projection TVs away, then the scrap metal scroungers would come along and gut the old televisions and leave the Fresnel lenses laying around. As the sun would change angles the abandoned lenses were starting fires in the alleys at random. Fences, dry grass brush, trash, pretty much anything. I have 15 or 20 of these lenses tucked between the shed and the house now, out of the sun.
