How to Front Post & Back Post Double Crochet - Free Easy Ribbed Stitch Pattern | Last Minute Laura

How to Front Post & Back Post Double Crochet
I will show you how to create the easiest rib stitch, with 2 simple stitches to add to your repertoire! The Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) and the Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC) are used here to pull the columns (or posts) of the stitches forward, and push them backward to create this dramatic ribbed appearance. This stitch or pattern is great to use as edging on sweaters, hats, or sleeves, and adds a higher level of sophistication to your crochet project!
Try it out and let me know what you think in the comments!

This was very helpful because you used the terminology front post (pushing the post to the front) and back post (pushing the post to the back). It's easier to remember what to do when your mind wanders off. Thank you!

OK I have to comment. I am a pretty NEW crochet-er. About 6 months or so IN IT. And when I heard the words "FPDC into the 4th DC" I PANICKED. Like I FULL-ON was going to frog my row of 80 shells....and i kept with you, and I DID IT!!!! You are a GEM. And you had me keep going and I DID THE THING! Thank you Laura!

I searched all the tutorials for a video on alternating the fpdc and bpdc and could not find one as thorough as yours. I was having a bit of challenge with the turn - you cleared that up for me. Thanks for clear, detailed instructions and for zooming in so close I'm able to see exactly where you're inserting the hook. Great tutor! Great video!

I found this video today (3.26.23) and looked to see when it was originally posted. Yikes...5 years ago! Color me happy. I am new to crochet and have been looking for an alternative to ribbed waistbands with back loop stitches...which I DO NOT like! This seems much easier...and much sturdier. And as you say, it really is pretty. Thanks very much!!

I just found this video n glad I did. I had made my daughter, some 40 years ago, a hat and scarf using this stitch. Unfortunetly I got away from crocheting and now that I'm retired I have gotten back into it but for the life of me I could not remember this stitch/pattern. It all came back to me with this video. THANK YOU! ❤

Thank you so much for your clear, precise video. In all my years of crochet, I have never heard of a front post or back post stitch, so I’ve learned something. I need the stitch as I’m going to be doing my kitty a cat sweater. I only got confused because what you call a double crochet, we know it as a treble in the UK. Thanks again x

It was really strange finding this video yesterday as I already know this stitch. It was a good couple of years ago when I was first learning to crochet and at the time I was learning to do the Front and Back Post Double Crochet and I did this stitch as an experiment wondering how it would turn out and it turned out beautifully. I did not know the name of this stitch at the time nor did I know whether it existed or not. So I now know the name of this stitch as well as the fact that it did indeed already exist. I had my own name for this stitch back then and now which I will not post here but it is amazing to know that I did this stitch before knowing that it existed.

Hi Laura. I am trying to make a beautiful blanket from a pattern I found in a book. I know how to do the FPdc and BPdc, but reading this pattern is a challenge. Would you like to give it a try? I sure could use the help. Love your videos!

I'm thinking of working this in the round for some fingerless gloves so that I can just keep on going in the round. This would be the wrist and I would work it up to the fingers. What do you think? I'll probably just try it out and see what happens....

Thanks so much for your video on Front and back post rib stitching. Do you have a video that shows how to add FPDC & BPDC ribbing on to a garment after the garment is made?
