How to Freeze Fresh OKRA - Steph’s Stove

How to Freeze Fresh OKRA
When okra is in abundance, what do you do with all of the okra pods? Freeze them. This method allows you to freeze okra easily where the pods are easily accessible to add to a soup, tomatoes, or peas.
Wash okra pods several times to remove any dirt or debris. Dry pods thoroughly and cut into ½ pieces discarding tops and ends off each pod. Place pods on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper in a thin single layer. Place in the freezer for four hours to quickly freeze. After four hours, remove from the freezer, and place in ziplock freezer bags. Label and return to the freezer.

So this is Freezing OKRA , without blanching. Why others do Blanching of Okra, and then freeze OKRA.

It’s not necessary to blanch okra prior to freezing. Okra will tend to get ”slimy” when you begin to cook it, even for the short time of blanching. However, it is very important to freeze in a single layer for best results. Thanks for your question. Have a blessed weekend!

Wash, drain, cut, spread on a sheet, put in oven for a few minutes to heat through, cool, bag…perfect.

Seems very wasteful to throw it in the trash when you can put it in a compost pile😢

Most of the scraps went to my neighbors chickens; they enjoyed every last bit. A few were saved for my daughter’s chickens 🐓 too. They take good care of any extra scraps I have when cooking. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a blessed day!!!
