How To Forge A Spearhead!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Anglo-Saxon royal burial chamber at Prittlewell, built for a prince in around 580AD contained some truly astonishing artefacts, amongst which were a pair of spearheads, corroded together into a lump, with remains of ornately carved wooden shafts still in situ within the sockets.
This is a video of my version of spearhead S67, forged in wrought iron with steel cutting edges forge-welded on the outside of the core.

Thanks Jez! I find making the videos a bit of a grind, but it's nice to keep a record I suppose!

Nice looking spearhead, it was really enjoyable to watch you making it. You also made it look way to easy compared to Matts hammering but I guess thats what you get when you compare a smith to an enthusiast.

Thanks! Matt did incredibly well in that film, we were doing things as awkwardly as possible to see if spearheads could be made in the same way as arrowheads, so if we'd done it the "right" way, I think he'd have found it far easier!

II like very much that you work with a small fire, I am sure its quite deep to build up welding heat but because of the way the forge is designed you have no need for a big bed of coals over the top. great to see Your work is very clean and a pleasure to watch... the grain in the wrought is lovely ...an offshoot of viking damascus there I believe

Man you can use a lot less material with a wrapped socket as opposed to a forge welded one

It was a wrapped socket, but he didn't have enough material so he forge welded some extra.

@mrkiky the only forge welding I did was to add the steel cutting edges to the wrought iron.

@@MedievalArrows Oh damn, that makes more sense. For some reason I thought you made the socket out of the welded part.
