Tools List for Flattening a Textured Ceiling:
Safety glasses [amzn.to/2USGrKj]
Ladder or staging [amzn.to/2Va9MoE]
Buckets [amzn.to/2UTm8fM]
Drill driver [amzn.to/2IRufYP]
Mixing drill bit [amzn.to/2J40hjL]
Taping knife [amzn.to/2ITdPiE]
Hawk [amzn.to/2ITepgk]
Shopping List:
Joint compound [amzn.to/2VGRWZO]
Plastic drop cloths [amzn.to/2ZPU6FG]
Canvas drop cloths [amzn.to/2Le0Fic]
Painter’s tape [amzn.to/2GMJ4IS]
Rags [amzn.to/2IVcs35]
220 grit sandpaper [amzn.to/2PCMKAX]
Steps:
1. Start by protecting the entire room with drop cloths. On the floor, use a canvas drop cloth. On the walls, use the plastic drop cloth. It isn’t necessary to cover the entire wall, just the top third.
2. Wipe down the ceiling with a damp rag to ensure it’s clean.
3. Mix the joint compound in a bucket using water and the drill with a mixing bit on it until it’s roughly thicker than a cake batter consistency.
4. Add some joint compound to the hawk. Scoop a small amount of the joint compound off the hawk using the taping knife, and then apply it in thin, smooth coats over the textured ceiling. This technique requires multiple coats, so don’t feel the need to fill in all the low spots on the first pass.
5. Wait roughly 45 minutes for the first coat to dry. Then, add a second coat.
6. Repeat this process until all the low spots are filled in and the ceiling is flat. It shouldn’t take more than 2-3 coats.
7. After 24 hours, lightly sand the ceiling using 220 grit sandpaper.
8. After the sanding, the ceiling will be ready for paint. Mauro recommends a flat, white paint for the ceiling.
Resources:
While scraping a textured ceiling is a common tactic to achieve a flat ceiling, Mauro suggests that in some cases, it’s a lot easier to smooth over the texture with joint compound than to scrape it off.
While a step ladder works fine for this project, Mauro finds it’s much easier and also safer to use staging to reach the ceiling. This can be rented from home centers.
Mauro used Sheetrock Easy Sand 45 joint compound, which is manufactured by USG (amzn.to/2VGRWZO). Mauro thinks this product works well in this application because it dries in a reasonable amount of time, while still giving you a little flexibility to really work with it and apply it smoothly to the ceiling.
The other tools Mauro used for the job, including the drill with the mixing bit, taping knife, hawk, and drop cloths can all be found at home centers.
Expert assistance with this segment was provided by Mauro’s Painting (maurospainting.com/).

These days they pull back carpet and exclaim "OMG, the original hard wood floors!" Someday they are going to remove the decorative ceiling tiles and say "OMG, the original popcorn ceiling!" I suspect smooth ceilings, that are the same color of the walls, are cheaper and quicker for contractors. Thus, potential buyers are sold on the idea that it is what's "in".

@@Bobby74892 While smooth ceilings are cheaper in materials they require more time/skill in measuring/hanging the sheetrock as well as the taping and mudding. You can hide a lot of mistakes with a textured ceiling, but when doing a smooth ceiling there is nowhere to hide. Recently built a home and the cost for a smooth ceiling was more than doing a texture because of the time to get it right.

I've flipped an apartment in the UK and I have to say a lot of the things you do don't directly apply to European homes (the drywall and basement stuff), but it's interesting to see how you deal with certain problems and those skills are definitely transferable. Keen watcher that will keep watching! :D

Couple other options include simply painting the ceiling any color other than white with a flat finish that'll make the plaster pattern ridges less noticeable. Except for any prominent ridges most of the ceiling is still more or less flat; adding beadboard or shiplap boards is another idea taking down, again, any prominent ridges with a sheetrock or other rasp. Sandpaper wont be effective on hardened plaster so don't bother. When protecting walls there is pre taped 12" & 48" plastic sheeting which is easier than trying to tape heavy loose plastic sheeting to the wall along the ceiling edge. To help keep a clean wall-ceiling edge, you can also run a 2" strip of blue paint around the perimeter and then tape plastic sheeting to the taped perimeter. While this is an extra step, you can be more exact and faster by applying a perimeter tape strip 1st and then more relaxed tape the plastic sheeting to the tape without needing to worry about it being so exact to the ceiling edge. For drywall compound consistency, yes not too loose nor too stiff...hahaha. Given you're going essentially for skim coating I'd suggest going for perhaps slightly thicker than a smooth, creamy yogurt consistency. You can also apply in bulk using a large 1/2" roller and then trowel smooth. Good luck all.

  • @stargateproductions
    @stargateproductions5 жыл бұрын

I think skim coating is the best method here. What they don't tell you is that it takes time and effort to get a smooth finish. Invest in a flat trowel and hawk. In between coats use a sponge or brush to smooth out lines. Keep coating till smooth. Either polish off your last coat with trowel and water or skim with all purpose and sand.

Our wals in the kitchen and bathroom were done with this. Garden sprayer filled with water and one of those large scrapers like he has and the stuff came off easy. It is just plaster stuck to the drywall and the better soaking and absorption you get the easier it scrapes off. Find a tuff spot spray with water let it sit till the surface is no longer wet looking and scrape it off.

Prime everything with an oil base primer such as kilz beautiful finish. If it was a larger texture you could fill everything in with a base coat plaster kal kote base coat or diamond or imperial base coat and use a finish plaster. Could do a ceiling like that in 2 hours on stilts. Very strong and durable finish Worried about plaster cracking you could embed fiberglass mesh into the base coat for strength comes in 36 inch rolls. Very strong finish could be done faster than any drywall. Looks way nicer than any level 5 drywall finish

Close but you can do better. First you should go over the entire ceiling with a paint scraper and scrape off all the little blobs and high points and retape the areas where the drywall tape delaminated. Next prime the ceiling. When that's dry use a mud pan instead of a hawk to apply the hard mud with your knife. The 45 they used is fine, whatever you feel comfortable using for the application. After that hardens go over with your taping knife and scrape off all the little high points, then do your second coat. Sand down your high points with a sanding sponge. Repeat for a third coat if necessary depending how deep the texture was initially and sand. The final step is important if you want to fill all the little divots and nicks. Get premixed general purpose joint compound and mix it up with water to a runny consistency. Paint it on the ceiling with a paint roller and pull it off with your taping knife, then spot sand with 220 or finer and a light to look for imperfections. Next prime the ceiling first then caulk all the corners with painters caulk, wiped down with a wet finger for a nice straight corner. I've been doing this method for years with great results.

For anyone looking for comments on if this is the right or wrong way to fix the ceiling, the answer is yes it is the right idea but a HORRIBLE demo. Do NOT listen to the idiotic other comments saying they should have added 1/4" or 3/8" drywall. Any competent plasterer could have floated that ceiling. My house had sprayed on texture in every room. Yes, it would be nice to start with fresh drywall but that is incredibly labor intensive and expensive. I ripped all the walls sheet rock off my own home to see if there was any problems behind the walls. I could see from above in the attic the condition of the ceilings. The main reason not to replace the drywall on the ceiling was that tons of blown in insulation would be pouring down and I would have to pay to replace that insulation and deal with having to blow it back in and it was maybe 10 years old anyway. The ceiling was floated smooth. The ONLY problem with floating previously textured sheetrock is that the layer of mud is now thick and the mud is soft so it is easy to dent. Since it is on the ceiling and never really touched, it's not a problem. This is another reason why I choose to remove and redo the sheet rock on the walls. Doing this on the ceiling is perfectly fine. People saying that they shot have added additional drywall and remud have no idea what they are talking about. 1/4 dry wall sucks a d your ceilit would end up showing every seam in a couple years. Adding 3/8 drywall is starting to get dicey since you have no idea how the ceiling is framed and if it can hold the added weight.

Why screw around with all this other stuff that may pop and crack later, I don't see it as being easier. Multiple coats, nope?
