How to flat tow with an RV

🚙 Takes less than 5 min to hook up the Jeep to flat tow
💪 We use the Blue Ox Apollo heavy duty tow bar and Patriot brake.
To flat tow, put the transfer case in neutral ➡️ transmission in PARK
It doesn’t accrue miles and easier than using a trailer!
Note: For proper use, be sure to cross the safety cables and put them under the tow bar along with the wiring harness

A trailer is also another registration expense and still requires storage that not all locations have available. You seem to be missing that point. The gear selector in your automatic vehicle selects the drive gear or neutral setting for the transmission of your vehicle (drive, reverse, etc). In non-four wheel drive vehicles you have a drive shaft or prop shaft that is attached to the the output of the transmission on one side and your final drive differential on the other side to drive your tires. Thus making it a bad idea to attempt towing while in park for obvious reasons. 4x4 vehicles have an additional assembly that sits between your transmission output and the drive shaft(s) connected to your differential(s). This is known as a transfer case. It has it's own set of gearing allowing for transfer of power to an additional drive shaft redirecting power to the front two wheel same as the rear (making 4x4 instead of 4x2). These gear options include both high and low gear ranges in 4x4 mode along with a neutral setting in between that serves various functions. This is in addition to it's pass-through setting for 4x2 functioning of the vehicle. Selecting neutral in the transfer case disconnects the drive line from the engine in the same way it would in the transmission. Keeping the vehicle in park simply disconnects or disables the odometer in the vehicle and has zero to do with the final drive setting in the transfer case. Every single vehicle works this way if it is a 4x4. And now you know ;-)

Thanks. We dont put the trans in park to disable mileage. We put the trans in park to prevent viscous coupling from rotating the trans when we tow and damaging it since there is no lubrication in an auto trans when the engine is not running. The Jeep doesn’t accrue any miles on the odometer simply because the ignition is off, so the ECU is powered down and not listening or recording mileage. We have towed it his way (in park) for over 30k miles.

I used to work at an RV shop and I saw a guy flat tow a Jeep in park before. That thing was bouncing and smoking as it skidded down the road with the axle locked up. Guy never noticed and just kept going. Funniest thing I ever saw.

I saw a story where just that happened. I believe it ended up in 1st gear 4 low... at freeway speeds... the engine bay looked like a grenade went off inside. Not even sure what the rpm would have been but sky high probably wouldn't even cover it.

The odds of a transfer case popping out of neutral are slim. If that happened it would be a manufacturer defect and would be a new vehicle regardless. The only cases of it happening are generally abused vehicles that are already on their last leg to begin with

@@BRONZE_ROCK I just looked up the manual for a 2004 TJ. under recreational towing which is what this falls under, it never mentions disconnecting a driveline. it explicitly states to put the Tcase into neutral and then either into drive or into gear if its a manual. Unless you have a random misprint, its the exact same across the board.

Our tires are still in great shape, we’ve towed it over 30k miles this way. We will likely need to replace them in the next 2 years at this rate though. We factor that into the cost. Main reason we flat tow is bc it’s easier than having a trailer with how often we move our RV 😀

It’s very dependent on the vehicle. For this particular vehicle, it was designed to be flat towed. We tow it as Jeep recommends. 😀

Jeeps have a transfer case with a neutral position that disengages the drive line from the transmission connection. Eliminating the need to pull drive shafts. The transmission should still always be placed in gear or park (if automatic) to stop any spinning without lubrication. I still don't know the physics of Saturn vehicles being flat towed. They were approved for flat towing your years. I'm assuming the transmission was slinger lubed.
