How to Fix The Routing In a Studio One Song when Needing to Export Stems

Музыка

Often we mix in a hurry, or as creativity strikes. This can sometimes lead to a Mix that becomes difficult to stem out, if (or when) the need arises. Thankfully Studio One has a robust workflow that allows us to fix these potential issues, and render out stems efficiently, and simultaneously if needed. In this video, I demonstrate how to fix the routing of a Studio One Song, with the end goal of rendering stems in mind.

It’s incredible that you hit this subject as I am dealing with exactly the same situation in the same way literally as I type this. The only difference is that I normally run my busses through a “sub” bus and then onto the master out. I do my processing on my sub so I have to go the additional step and copy my plugs/processing to my “basket track” (great phrasing!) from my sub so I can eliminate the sub altogether in my exporting to stems. I wish there was an option to take the stem bounce out all the way through the path through the master and not just stop it from the end bus. In any case, great video and keep up the amazing work!

Great video subject Marcus. I will need to make more FX channels for my busses as well. This way the verbs I used for the drums and percs won't be shared by other elements in mixes. Time for some revisions....

Won't this drastically change the sound of the mix? Shared verbs vs discrete verbs. Glue, versus cluttering up the space with tons of verbs wrestling each other. I do see your point that, you are rendering a solo'ed version of the sub, but when playing the stems together, it won't sound like the original mix. Seems a catch 22 to me. I would have done the mix the first way, shared verbs and all, and not worried too much about stemming, and then came around and did exactly what you did here. Just my opinion lol. Thanks again for the vid. The BEST Studio One instructional channel on the net.

This confirms I'm not crazy LOL. I have a template setup with this type of routing.

Thanks Marcus, great video again. Do you know how Mix FX works with exporting mixdowns of each bus? I used the export mixdown option and selected each of the channels and buses one at a time but I have found my exported bus mixdowns sound very different when reassembled into a complete track all together compared to the sound of the original mix before exported. I'm wondering if because i use Mix FX on some buses, is there bleed through being duplicated on each mixdown export which might be causing the different sounding results? many thanks

Nice Video, Thanks a lot! But If you have any Automations in the Sends and SendsFX will they automatically being applied to the new copied Send FX settings?

FX channels seem restricted to either receive or output to unique busses. The FX channel prohibited the usage of the same input (receive from "Drum Bus") and output (output to "Drum Bus"). If you send from a track into a Bus (example "Drum Bus") to an FX channel then the output of this FX channel does not show the previously used send bus ("Drum Bus") anymore. This also works reversed: if you route the FX channel output to a bus (Example Drum Bus), you not able to send you a signal from that bus to this FX channel ("Drum Bus" is not available under Send options). This is to disable any feedback loops?

multiple outputs would be a much efficient way of doing this. every daw has an option to mult a track except s1 and maybe logic

this is where Cubase thrives better. They have option to export bus with just inserts or inserts and sends or inserts, sends and master fx in export window
