as a road side tech I'd say that works good to keep your trailer from locking up. If your truck has drums the same thing could happen although I see that less often. just keep a hammer and a drift punch of some sort and you can sort it out yourself every time.

"Smack it, you can't hurt your drum".. Now, whilst just trying to free up a stuck brake, I might agree with you. However, I have actually cracked drums before trying to get them off trucks. Mostly with severely worn brakes that let the S cam over rotate and completely lock everything to shit. In these cases even trying to back the slack adjusters off, or even completely removing them sometimes isn't enough. I love the auction shit my company brings in.. LOL

@@truckercarlson9081 So we see this pretty often when it rains. If it rains and then dries it creates rust on the fresh metal of the drums and that’s when we see this happen a lot. The other instance we see it happens is when you’re running in weather that’s freezing because the brakes get hot and get wet but then when you stop for the night if you set your brakes the water cools off and freezes to your drums. If this is happening regularly and it’s not raining then something is up but if it’s been raining off and on it could just be some rust and the best way to stop it on your trailers is to not set your trailer brakes at night

Well that is a tough one, now I am guessing if you have a dust cover then you have disc brakes and not drum brakes? If you have disk brakes I suppose you could tap on the rotor very carefully to try and achieve the same results. But I would be worried about damaging the rotor. I have never once had my disc brakes lock up on me though so I haven't had the chance to try it on discs.

All of your brakes are not setting or just one? This could be multiple problems. A brake severely out of adjustment could cause this but it is unlikely that all your brakes are out of adjustment that badly. A defective brake valve could be stopping the air from releasing out of the brake cans. Would have to know more info to diagnose that one

Mostly water that dries up and leaves rust behind and the rust sticks the brakes to the drum. It also happens in the winter when the brakes are hot and snow melts into water on the brakes. But then when you park the water freezes and ices up the brakes to the drum.

Well to be honest I most often use this when it is summer time and it rains and then the brakes get stuck to the drums with rust. I certainly have had to use it in winter time to, but you can avoid that by not setting your brakes and letting them cool first. Drum brakes are weird and then can get stuck just about anytime of the year.

Haha, well every time I tell someone to hit the drum they tap it with a little nail hammer like they are hitting in a tiny penny nail. No one gets their brakes broken free by doing that. Of course it is possible to hurt your drum. But, have you ever seen a trailer mechanic do your brakes? Have you seen what they use to get the drum off it it is stuck to the hub? 10 lb sledge hammer with a full swing. So, as a former trailer mechanic myself, no you won't hurt your drum when laying down under your trailer trying to brake your brakes free. As this video is meant to provide you information on how to get your brakes free, my advice is to give it a good whack. Unless you are Barry Bonds you won't be able to get a big enough swing to do any damage.

Let me add a clarifying comment to that reply. I typically only think about drums as being centrifuse drums because that is all we have in our fleet. If you have cast drums you are correct you can crack those with a hammer.

My company never explains anything. Been working there for years. They'll fix it and go back inside to bad mouth how stupid you must be for not knowing that. Just fall out the womb knowing everything and act like you're stupid. They wouldn't even need to put on their coat to go outside in the cold, if they would just explain what you just explained. Thanks 👍🏻 for the video.
