How to Fix Rust on Your BBQ Smoker & Do a Test Burn | Season Your BBQ Smoker | Restore BBQ Smoker

To season you smoker follow the manufacturer suggestions for your specific smoker. Spray canola oil on the exterior surface of the smoker and bring the ambience temperature to 300*-500* for 2-3 hours or until the oil is baked onto the surface.
To conduct a test burn place temperature probes throughout the smoking chamber and monitor your temperature over a 3 to 4 hour period adjusting the size & amount of wood you put into the firebox to gain an understanding of how your smoker responds & maintains temperature. This will help you understand what actions to take when you are actually smoking meat.

Hey Glenn, you’re welcome & thanks for watching! I will add that if you rust is real thick you may need to grind it or use a steel brush before hand. If not already please subscribe to my channel and hit that like button. Happy Smokin 👍🏻

Can you also use the canola oil for the inside as well? Was just gifted a used vertical propane smoker and there is rust on the inside. Appreciate your video!

Thanks for watching! I use canola oil on the inside when I season all of my smokers so I don’t see why you couldn’t for this as well depending on how bad the rust is. Thanks again for watching and if not already, please subscribe to my channel and like the video. Happy Smokin!

Is that all you have to do to control the rust? Periodically spray with canola oil? Im thinking about purchasing a used stick burner that has some rust.

I want to paint mines with black high temp pedant paint. Should I season it first or paint it first????

Thanks for watching Gregory! I’m not sure but I’m thinking season it first to add a protective layer and once that is baked on real good paint over it. You might find after you season it you don’t even need to paint it, which is what happened to me. Hope this helps. If not already please subscribe to my channel and hit that like button👍🏻. Happy Smokin!
