HOW TO FIX P0171 & P0174 Codes + COMMON E46 VACUUM LEAKS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome to ShopLifeTV!
In this video I go over the most common causes for the p0171 and p0174 codes. These codes are set by the o2 sensors detecting a lean condition on either of the banks. I show the problem areas including common vacuum leaks on the e46.

After countless hours of searching online and messing with my e46 I finally got rid of p0171 and p0174. Problems I had were all small vacuum lines were dry rotted, valve cover gasket and disa gasket needed to be replaced, intake boots were cracked, fuel filter was clogged, and the ccv lower oil vent hose was broken. After all that and two drive cycles I got all monitors ready with no codes. I noticed it’s easier to set monitors when using cruise control than by trying to hold a steady speed with your foot.

Excellent video! An automotive diagnostic smoke machine is your best tool for finding these leaks. Disconnect the boot from the MAF and send smoke through the boot. This test the entire intake system and will show any gross leaks easily, although it may not show all vacuum leaks. Also know a dirty or aftermarket air filter esp on an E83 X3 with M54 can also cause lean mixture faults. And don't forget the fuel filter. Good fuel pressure doesn't necessarily mean good flow.

Your E46 diy tutorials are the best and have helped me fix a salvage pos 2001 325i nightmare that someone conned my mom into buying and rebuild it into an actual decent and reliable daily driver that passes smog. It’s starting to look better and run smoother every day and we were able to pull this off on a very minimal budget. Note that I am a 5’2” tall 110 lbs female with pretty good hands but no formal training in mechanics. If I can do it, anyone who isn’t lazy and follows good instructions can as well.

My p0171 and p0174 codes were triggered by the DISA valve flap armature (white hollow lever under the small black triangular cover) that snapped and since its hollow on the inside was letting enough vacuum by to trigger the codes. I'm shocked since the hole was only 3mm in diameter but it did trip the codes and made the idle stumble a little.

Didnt realize that ms45 cars had the IAT built into the MAF. Pretty interesting. Only thing to mention would be that some cars have a line running from the fuel rail down to that cap on the ccv, so if the cap is missing, it could be that the line has rotted away, or popped off.

Thanks for this awesome vid! I have the same issue on '15 BMW X1 and my BMW dealership performed a smoke test which they said found no leak. But they identified the following issues; 1) There is a leak in crankcase system and recommended to replace front crankshaft seal and b) found oil leaking from vacumm pump. Do you think these could be the reasons for the P0171 code? I took my car to my local guy and they said most likely these are irrelevant to the engine code and won't make the sign go away. Would highly appreciate your insights on this matter.

This is one of the better videos on this subject, but it too fails to mention a pretty common source of the vacuum leak. On the underside of the intake manifold, pointing to the rear, there are three nipples that are used as attachments for vacuum lines on some BMW models but not others. On many models, the nipples are covered by rubber caps. With time and heat the caps can crack and leak, or even fall off, thus creating an even bigger leak. Check these first. If this is the problem as it was on mine, it is a 5 minute $0.50 fix.

My bmw 325i is leaking fumes from the oil fill cap when removed, what would the cause of that be? My rpms jump up and down while idling and shakes runs rough

great overview- thank you. I have a question: Could the vacuum leak cause P0128 code on 2007 335i? I've replaced thermostat, water pump and the coolant temperature sensor but the same code came back a month later. - Thanks to all who may help!.

Hi nice information. Would a Vanos solenoid cause a fault? My E46 340ci has 150000 miles on the clock. I have replaced just about everything on it now and it comes back with this fault.

so my m54 e39 idles fine but when I drive my rpms go up and down, I scanned and got P0171, P0174 and P1350 (misfire during start cyl 5). Any suggestions, I'm yet to check all the leaking spots as showed in the vid. The engine does have a cold air in take but it's pretty shit so it might be somewhere around there. thanks in advance.
