Something that seems pretty clear at Man United is that they've fallen into this big club curse, where they have the perception they can't afford to take 1 step back to take 2 steps forward. They've taken many steps back, yes, but always seeming in panic, overpaying for players, rushing managers, getting managers with completely distinct identities. It's not only due to the lack of a sporting director. When/if the right person comes, they will probably need to accept the process that arsenal went through and we can see it with Tottenham: get the players you need for your strategy, sell the players that do not fit in the plan, even if that means that in the first season or two you will be a bit average and will not promise titles or even top4 to anyone.

I think that's been a fundamental problem under Ten Hag, he picks players to attack the big teams and away from home ignoring the fact we are not controlling those games and are spending most of the time without the ball.

The sporting director is a part of solving this but really the whole leadership structure needs to change, from CEO down. At the moment, everything revolves around the manager. Ten Hag is completely exposed and has to deal with all the heat. It's all on him to perform right now or he's done for, there's no one saying that this is a 3 year project and taking some of the attention away.

In case of Tottenham I feel it showed the need to have the manager and the club on the same side. For example Udogie and Sarr who were both club's choices have shown to be a great buy with the right manager in Ange. But then you see the likes of Spence, Sessegnon, Clarke and also academy players like Skipp and Tanganga who were shoved into the first team under managers that didn't exactly want or need them, spending the time sitting on the bench instead of developing, so we end up stuck with these sidelined players who don't suit the system and are unlikely to sell them for significant money. Adding the fans demands and trying to satisfy their wishes makes it all even more complicated, especially for United whose fans have expectations higher than most clubs

I also asked a question which tifo even quoted in the summer episode about Man Utd. And I think ten hag doesn't really have an answer for it, which is: he is stuck with a lot of players who are good in transition (Bruno, Rashford, Sancho when he wasn't out, center backs who aren't amazing off he ball, even hojllund to same extent). But he wanted to introduce a completely different playing style without overhauling key areas and it didn't work. He is stuck with a playing style he doesn't really want or know how to coach and the club made so many bad decisions that it's too late to overhaul. Last season wasn't particularly impressive either, they had 2-3 good months and a pretty mediocre year apart from that. They mostly benefited from most top4 contenders being MIA

Villa got Monchi and they are something else this season. Micheal Edwards was intergral in how L’pool did their recruiting & the benefits were seen on the pitch. A good sporting director does make a difference.

This is what Utd fans have been saying since 2014. The glazers made the conscious decision to hire Woodward as head of recruitment, a decision no sane Utd fan accepted from day 1. What makes it worse is the reason why the glazers hired him (followed by arnold) - it’s not because they think they are talented recruiters, it’s because they literally don’t care about the football. Hence the protests. It mental how in 2023 people are only just twinging on to the reason why the protests have been a thing since 2005 lol.

This is actually amazing. This is the first time I've understood how a club runs as a system and it really helps to draw out where dysfunction could come into it. Completely agree with the breakdown; it would be an applicable plan at the highest level to any normal business. I'd be super curious to understand how SAF operated when he was there. Was he effectively Sporting Director / Manager or was running a club a simpler task.

I think SAF had full control over pretty much everything to do with the club from the football perspectove but now times have changed and you need a DOF to work in harmony with your manager, so your manager only has to focus on what he was brought to do

Harvard interviewed Sir Alex Ferguson and published the case paper. His vision was to build a club from the foundation up, starting with the academy. He also managed football players as a player portfolio and figured out that players should be refreshed roughly every 4 years (he sold most of them very early and only kept a couple above the age of 30). No player had more power than him, which he felt destroyed clubs and created a toxic environment. He criticises clubs that purely drive all club decisions based on immediate match results. There's a lot more in the paper, but just to give you a taste. Quite an interesting read, and helps you understand why Man United should not sack Ten Hag. You can find it on Google.

SAF didnt spend a lot of time with in the training round, that allows him to have more distance. He always have a long term vision - except his very last seasons, because he knew it was over for him - because at the very beginning, the board telle him it was a long term project - and he keep this idea. Even when Arsenal or Chelsea went to challenge him. But he was very good with the short term - for example how he used mindgame. He was just a genius, what he did isnt possible anymore - there's far more staff in clubs today. He change his main assistant every 2 to 4 years, someone usually young, to always I imagine challenge his knowledge and never become in late with innovation Plus, it was never him alone : it was him for the sporting department, and David Gill for the financial one. We always forget Gill but he was here since 1997 and he leave at the same time than SAF.

They could have sold ronaldo to Saudis for 50million but they chose to beef with him instead. Harry Rashford Martial Lindelof have all overstayed their welcome by atleast 2 seasons and yet their toxicity remains at the club. I'm not even a UNITED fan but it's clear for all to see.

Malcolm glazer was savvy and was able to abuse a (now closed) loop hole in being able to leverage debt for a takeover, but the kids are silver spoon morons. Chelsea have been considering the short term but its not gone to plan. Yes they signed a lot of young players who aren’t the finished product but they also signed ‘win now’ players like Sterling and Nknuku and already had experienced players in Silva, James and Chilwell. They’re trying to blend youth with experience.

as a man united fan in my opinion the club needs is: 1. a long term project and a manager: i'm okay with finishing mid table for a few seasons if that guarantees success for a coming decade or 2, what we really need a footballing identity and not signing players here and there, signing players who would adapt into the system and coordinate with the manager and play some actual football 2. better medical team: ten hag still hasn't played his best XI because of the injury crisis we have been since the start of the season 3. better training facilities: because of poor training facilities our players get injured more often, even some championship clubs have better training facilities than carrington 4. a better scouting team and academy: we should also be finding top talents from europa and latin america and training them to world beaters rather than relying on other clubs, clubs like barca manage to stay in top 2 most of the time even during an injury crisis because they have a world class academy, and clubs like ajax, brighton, dortmund, etc. sell their academy players with huge potential for big money which helps them in the market too (although ik ajax have been in some turmoil lately) 5. a proper sporting director: signing of mason mount still hasn't made any sense and his performances have been poor, we need a sporting director who would work with the manager and the board for signing the best talents around europe who would fit in the system rather than signing just for the sake of it 6. removing deadwood: club needs to be more strict with removing deadwood, phil jones basically spent his entire career sitting on the bench for united, maguire might get a new contract because of his promising performances lately, rashford got a new contract because of a 3 month purple patch, united really need to move on from players

A team like Manchester united should have gotten strikers such as aguero or haaland (which they messed up on). He is injury prone and he lacks desire and hunger is plain lazy on the pitch. And this contributes to said problem of the whole squad. The fact there are still fans that defend him show how much the standards have dropped. Martial is not a talented prodigy anymore. He is 28 years old. There's already a track record of getting a lot of older strikers of recent times already - CR7 v2, ibrahimovic, falcao, cavani where they do well for a bit and drop off. The point on harry kane is valid but if united are building for the future then kane is not it. This squad won't contend for the league anytime soon so buying kane would result in then replacing another player AGAIN. thus the cycle would continue.

It's not an impossible job neither is it difficult. Arteta and Klopp were given multiple seasons AND allowed to finish outside the top 4to clear out the deadwood and implement their vision. Look at them now. Y'all really think Erik couldn't do the same with another 2 seasons barring massive injuries? United cannot keep recycling managers after every 18 months.

Both club have technical directors to make sure that if the managers had a string of failures, the players would be useful to the next manager. Some of the players that was cleared out are useful to the teams till the end.

I really like the idea you contrasted about immediate and long-term targets. It feels like now United is being spoiled by history. They are being spoiled by the fact that SAF is the mastermind of the previous success. This is however in conjunction with what Mourinho said when he was at Man Utd that Man City had already built their team before Pep Guardiola came. As far as I liked Man Utd last year, I realized how the solution implemented by Man Utd only covers the immediate target (e.g. Champions League spot). Watching the Bayern Match last night I felt like there is no identity at all in how United plays. It almost feels like the players like teenagers scrambling everywhere when out of possession. I think it is slightly better when we have possession though. It almost felt like we were only playing football when we had advantages.

Ferguson his last title was won in a PL with a top that was already on the decline for several seasons with a United team that was miles behind the standard of the elite teams that could beat every title winning team he ever produced. What do you mean by trigger happy brethren? Doesn't make sense. Fans don't control anything, if they did, Ole would have been sacked in his first season. There was so many "Ole out" social media movements and they didn't bulge. As long as Eth doesn't cost Joel Glazer money by missing out on CL, he's safe. Fans opinion doesn't matter. Ole didn't win anything for 2 seasons and wasn't sacked because he consistently made UCL. LVG won fa cup with a young team and was sacked because he didn't meet the financial targets

Good question you can't because every solution we try to find gets screwed by the board and the Glazers. I agree that we need a transfer overhaul, implement data from the off, reflect on each dept's processes and don't forget the human element but if we can't find the right sporting director then there is no chance for success

I feel like people in England are just waking up to the importance of sporting directors. There seems to be this idea that a club is run by the manager, but they are only a small part of the club and are often constricted by those around and above them. For example how often do you hear "he spent X amount on this player or that player" as if it was the manager negotiating the deal, or the only person who makes a decision on who the club tries to sign. Spurs under Pochettino did great while Paul Mitchell was behind the scenes pulling the strings. Just as Southampton were with Paul Mitchell prior. Pep takes the credit at City, but where would he be without Beriristain? Or Klopp's title winning side without Edwards. Emery is getting all the credit at Villa, but Monchi's recruitment has been vital this summer. Dan Ashworth was the mastermind behind Brighton under Potter, and now is the man behind Howe at Newcastle. Recruitment is the biggest expense at a football club and one of the biggest factors in success. Bringing someone in who is looking at the bigger picture to oversee this process is the best way to have a consistent and logical recruitment process, maximising your chances of success. For me Paul Mitchell or Dan Ashworth are the best options for a club like Manchester United. With Mitchell being far easier to recruit than Ashworth who would be difficult to get out of Newcastle.

Great points and the key words were recruitment for the club not just for the manager. Example - the club recruited few under 20’s and also in process of brining up an academy player but the manager want to spend 70 mill on a 25+ year old on long term contract.

Jim Ratcliffe’s role shouldn’t be to emulate what other sporting directors have done but should just focus on what United need - Medical Dept., Player Welfare, Men’s team, Youth Academy and Data Dept. I can understand why many would want Ratcliffe to help with the transfers but United need to fix the system they use before they try to add to it because it hasn’t worked for years.

they're gonna get the guy that did the PSG/Juve Project.

They just need a full rebuild. Liverpool and Arsenal have shown that the clubs successful in the 90s/2000s are very old fashioned until you get the long term, visionary manager in and turn the club over to them. Utd keep trying to short cut their way back to the top but everything is so far behind other clubs now that it'll take a few years - no more Varane, Ronaldo or Casemiro signings, they need modern players who could fit in at the better clubs (Maguire for example cannot play in a good attacking team because of his limitations) They need to get a new young manager in give him the reigns for 4 years, take their lumps and let him rebuild all parts of the club just like Klopp and Arteta have.

Aaaand the sporting director position is where real football can learn from American football. In American football, we have someone call the "General Manager" who is head of the "front office." The front office is responsible for both the player acquisition side of things as well as running other elements of the franchise (medical staff, overseeing practice facilities and stadium maintenance, hiring of coaches, data analysis etc). They work with the coach to try to get players that the coach wants but also have long term interests, such as drafting players from the NFL draft, getting good players at a good price, and staying under the salary cap. It takes some of the pressure off of the coach and allows for them to focus full time on figuring out how to get the best out of the players they currently have and in the case of not having a way forward, simply letting the front office know, "I'm really missing this type of player", then let them find that player.

They need marc overmars! He makes rational decisions and has done it superb at Ajax and Antwerpen. Gives a calm vibe to the club and knows what he is doing. Make a video about him please!

Focusing on data perspective, like a company, a football club (especially big like United) needs an across-all-department database for sure. But like many other aspects that United is struggling with, it takes time, around 3-4 years at least.

Honestly it’s so simple but everyone apart from the people in charge can see it. Clear out the entire playing squad who everyone KNOWS have too much power & very little hunger to prove themselves. Rashford, sancho etc A proper wage structure, stop paying excessive wages where the base pay is already 200k+ , have performance based incentives. Why are rashford , sancho etc going to care if they have a bad game when they still get 250k+ a week regardless of if they have a stinker or MOTM performance. Sign players who have the right character and are hungry to improve and have the correct mentality. Take chances on players before they make the move to a Brighton, psv , Ajax etc Imagine United had sign caicedo before Brighton, you’ve got a CDM for 4.5M for the next 10 years and you don’t need to go and sign Casemiro for £70M, Alvarez for £15M you don’t then need to sign Rasmus for £72M. And last of all get players that suit the system you want to play and clear out the ones that don’t, there’s no point wanting to play tiki taka but your starting midfielder is Mctominay , no point playing out from the back and a high line if your CB’s lack pace and are confident on the ball to play out from the keeeper.

Good suggestions, but I'd prefer that that Man U wasn't fixed. I like them the way they are now. Or maybe in the Championship.

It is true. ABU syndrome remains. For good reason - United weren't the most gracious of champions or fanbases. City (and even Chelsea to some degree) remember their humbler roots better, I'd say.

Owners are just milking the fandom behind past glories and appointing anyone who seems competent at that moment in time to manage the football. No sporting director, no data department, changing "project" every other year and relying on agents to get established players. Totally clueless.

One thing I'd love is if we got away from this fan logic of "We are United and we do X" or we do Y this way or that way. It's so immature. When I hear fans say "we are united we should be playing high attacking football". No, United is a brand. It's value is in winning. Klopp didn't come to liverpool and say "I used to play this way but i'll play how liverpool play now". I remember when Jose was winning and people were still complaining about 1-0 or 2-1 wins. "We need to score 3,4,5 and concede less", "we can't be so defensive". It reminds me of casuals who watch UFC and moan / dislike wrestlers like Khabib. "He's boring", "he doesn't fight properly". It's this child-like mentality of fighting = standing toe to toe swinging. I'd rather win a season with 1 goal wins than finishing 4th with nice looking fantasy football.

Signing players like Varane and Casemiro (win now) and Hojlund and promoting Garnacho (future talents) is a really bizarre transfer strategy.

Ronaldo pretty much exposed the whole club. He gave all the info anyone needs. I remember seeing vids of RM training and at the gym etc, it's insane in a world where fitness is key. Utd don't have updated gyms etc, that alone is enough to fail.

I think recruitment has continued with these 'statement signings' like Casemiro which we pretend were still a big club on the pitch, we are not. 70 Million for Hojlund was ridiculous and he has been unable to fix our attack. There's many facets which must be fixed, but for me recruiting the right players at the right price is key. Plus, replacing and overhauling a side that just look like they don't want to be there anymore.

That tshirt/tie combo is an interesting choice…

Honestly not sure if that's true. Suspect it's as much the club not having alternatives to the postions he wants to strengthen as much as him demanding the club spent £80m on Antony for example.

Simple really…I don’t know we are always making it seem like an impossible job when the fact is we just keep hiring managers that keep making the same mistakes again and again. 1. Going for big name signings that’s don’t fit the team. 2. Playing players out of position. 3. Favouritism and bias against certain players. 4. Throwing players under the bus. 5. Being stubborn with their tactics and team selection while taking no personal accountability. 6. No pressure because they know they won’t get sacked till after xmas no matter how dire the team is and when they do, they’re comfy with that sweet severance packet. Every single manager since SAF done the same thing and got sacked.

Excellent explanation of the reasons why the structure you outline is necessary for any football club that wants long-term viability at the highest level. The Glazers don't seem to grok any of this....they just dump most of responsibility on whatever manager is in place...and we have plenty of hard evidence that this don't work from the churn of managers we have seen. So the key missing point...that sits above all others...is 'to have owners that understand/care about the ensuing points you make'. And this is why the Glazers need to go. They treat Man Utd as a cash machine and, as long as it it is doing OK (eg near the top), they don't give a damn about real success on the pitch.....or indeed the fans who want this too. The Glazers are just plain thieves who have stolen the club from its fans. Their very dodgy 'business' dealings should be investigated/exposed by some proper journalists....and questions should be asked of the Football authorities and the UK Government as to why this level of greed/theft has been allowed to happen.

I think point number five should have been point number one. It’s without a doubt the biggest issue on and off the field. It doesn’t take a sporting director to plan the evolution of a club. It takes common sense. The correct people would honestly fix 90% of the issues. The rest of the points are how to get from fourth to first.
