HOW to FIX HIGH RENT in Cities: Skylines 2

Ойындар

In this Cities: Skylines 2 video I will be showing you how to fix the high rent problems in your city.
First we will be talking about how to identify your potential problem by taking a look at the household with the high rent problem, looking at its residents and discussing the reasons they might not be able to pay the high rent.
Then we will be talking about making sure your citizens are educated enough as that could be a reason they cannot afford their high rent.
Then the second potential problem we look at is zoning demand and not leaving it for too long as citizens will then be unable to move to a lower rent cost building or move to a higher paid job to be able to afford their high rent.
Next we talk about land value and how too many amenity's can cause high rent problems in your city.
Then we talk about how to deal with office, commercial or industrial buildings having the high rent problem and what to do to fix it.
Finally we talk about the possibility of a bug in the game that will continually show this high rent notification. We will discuss a couple of ways you can work your way around this bug.

    @@kripticlunar8198 approach this from an irl perspective: if you could buy a single family home at an affordable price you would, no? So if given abundant low density housing why would there ever be demand for medium or high density? CO definitely fucked up communicating how demand works because it's not a "do this" bar anymore. If you want medium density you have to increase low density residential demand way past the maximum. Same for high density with medium density demand needing to be maxed (this one is a bit weird because eventually you will get natural high density demand but no or less natural medium density demand) I've got an entire city with 0 low density residential and it's working fine. Again, CO messed up communicating this change to the demand bar imo. It's less the "you need to build this now" indicator from Cities 1 and more a "if you want the city to have more of this, you can zone it and there will be buildings constructed" which imo is fine but it has some rough edges (medium density demand only popping up if low density demand is a good bit over the maximum is not mentioned anywhere iirc)

    There's deffo lots of factors at play but there's also some glaringly obvious issues that don't make sense to any of these mechanics. Like when some of these properties are occupied by "wealthy" families. An even bigger issue is when you zone in 'low rent' housing only for them to suffer the same issue. However, I've noticed these high rises seem to abandon much quicker and will then later collapse. I zoned out all my 'low rent' for that reason. One thing I haven't tried is creating any districts and I wonder if there's tools in there to help. I think a bit factor is properties leveling up, maybe there's a policy to prevent that. Or there might be other policies that would help in some way - TBC (if I remember to come back with an edit after testing 😂)

    Demand in this game, is not explained well, we still have CS1 brains, we see demand, we zone to fulfill that demand haha The game does a bad job explaining that it's not the same. In CS2 what's happening (i think) is that demand is some sort of "desirability" meter for each type of zoning. For example: if you see a lot of low density residential demand, people WILL move in to single family houses or if you see industry demand, people WILL create workplaces. But you don't *have to* fullfill this demand. You can wait for the low density demand to acumulate enough to make citizens move to a building. People still want to live in your city and if only high density is available they will move, its just that they prefer a single family home. Also, for industry, i recommend to better look the available workplaces instead of the demand meter, that way you know when to build more. Offices work the same way, they just hire better educated workers. Commercial is the most difficult for me to grasp, i think is just a correlation with residential density. If you have a lot of commercial buildings, they will complain for not having enough clients. This is caused maybe because not enough people live close to these businesses. So you need to delete some commercial zoning or increase the people living nearby. These tips have worked for me, and I dont know, just hoping for a patch where they can put this information in the game.

    That is a mean way to fix it, because you are taking people out of their home. If they are poor, for example, they might not be able to find another house, so they move away from your city or become literally homeless.

  • @CactusBravo42

    @CactusBravo42

    9 ай бұрын

    @@MemoriesLP That’s not necessarily true. This strategy makes sense and works well because a higher density means more households per square meter, which means they might be able to afford a row home or an apartment better than an single family home.

  • @MemoriesLP

    @MemoriesLP

    9 ай бұрын

    @@CactusBravo42 Of course that is true. You are literally making people homeless. If they have money, they move to a new house, if not, then well... you know what will happen. That solution you are talking about is the one that sees citizens in this game and numbers, and not as actual people that are supposed to be living in a fictional city. You can make apartments nearby and they move there, or something like that. That's how you fix it. I have followed a poor family that had this issue, and moved a cheaper apartment. You don't need to destroy their home and make them homeless. So I never do that, because I just pretend everyone is a real citizen. Sure it is not the most effective way, but that's how I see it.

  • @CactusBravo42

    @CactusBravo42

    @@MemoriesLP With all due respect, This game is not a morality simulator. It’s a city building simulator.This is what happens even in real life. Thats why you don’t find single family homes in big city centers. The City will price you out of your home, then Demolish it for an apartment building. The fact that they cannot afford rent doesn’t mean they’re poor. You see moderate families too in the game with this issue. It just means the land is way too valuable for the house sitting on it.

    @@MemoriesLP Your thoughts are very interesting by the way! I think somehow just like you, but i also try to act as a city mayor would do: do things without caring too much, lol. If i need to construct some important buildings or a new street, i would take some time to analyze if i would lose too much. I always avoid to destroy houses that has been already constructed, cause i always had the notion that people are living there and my city would feel a lot without them. Looks like that in this new C.S 2, people are more important than before. I didn't know they could move to a better house, that's very cool. I don't think you're playing in the ''wrong'' way. That's how you should play it. Managing a city is not just building roads and bus stops. We must find the middle point between efficiency and caring for the population. You're totally right! And i know it has nothing to do with the subject here, but i think that if all politicians learned to play this game and Sim City 4, they would certainly become a better public servant, for sure! I know it's just a game, but if you look this way, we learn a lot about economy and everything.

    One explanation the game gave to me was: build more low residential areas nearby if you can. If the poor citizen is living among just a few residences in his hood, the rent will be much higher. In my case, i didn't have any area to build more low residential areas, so i choosed to lower the poor residents taxes directly. As one guy said below, you want to make poor people pay higher taxes, so they will seek a better education and find better jobs. But if you do that, who's gonna maintain the basics and low income services? That's my doubt.

Stop zoning low density residential and industrial. Increase the tax rate on uneducated and poorly educated to 12% and likewise reduce the tax rate on well educated and highly educated to 8%. Your goal is to encourage your citizens to want office jobs and not cheap labor jobs. Next, make sure you have a college and a university. Lastly just allow the sim to run (maybe at x2 speed). @@OllotizeGaming not sure how well you understand residential demand but I'll add my experience with it in case it helps: higher density demand only ever seems to appear from overflowing lower density demand, ie medium density only is in demand after low density demand is capped at max and then some (feels like 120/130% before medium density demand starts) same with high density demand coming from overflowing medium density demand *but* there also appears to be some high density demand (likely) from highly educated cims. The same does not seem to be the case with medium density demand (at least from my experience, could also be that I simply never have a medium density zoning scarcity) It's also entirely possible to have a functioning city with 0 low density residential.
