I know this is an old post.. but I just had the same problem with my desktop running an RTX 3090. Desktop Window Manager was constantly spiking my usage up to 100% on my GPU. Running latest drivers on everything (Nvidia 522.25). After trying everything on the internet to fix this, I found that turning off "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" in Windows 10 "Graphics settings" is what finally fixed the issue for me.

@@Mentaliversity. try updating both cpu and GPU drivers. And uninstall xbox game bar(watch some videos on how to uninstall it) For me it was both integrated graphics and xbox game bar that was causing the issues.

i have 0 knowledge about this topic, but my dwm exe just jump between 13% to 28 at max, is this normal?

For those who need to turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and can't find "Graphic Settings" and are on Windows 10-11 I found it in System > Display > Graphics (Under Related Settings) > Change default graphic settings > turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.

it was 100% the drivers fault for me on my RTX 3080. I downloaded driver version 517.48 that some others had tested longer down in this comments section and now GPU usage have gone down from 90-100% to 0-1%

Exact same thing with my 3090. I was going nuts trying to figure it out. I was messing with some malware in a VM the other day and all of a sudden this morning 100% GPU. I was scanning multiple times to see if my machine was infected, updating my OS and various applications, disabling things trying to figure it out. Nope. Just needed to rollback the GPU driver to 517.48 and everything is back to normal.

Did all of this including in the comments turning off gpu accel...blah blah, and a few other things. Roll back driver reinstall etc. Before I was able to turn twitch resolution down to reduce firefox and dwm gpu usage, and that doesn't even work now. This bullshit has to be in a windows update that they force on you.

Just staying, please update drivers, I was troubleshooting for hours on end and updating drivers fixed it. Please dont be like me and update your drivers.

I uninstalled the current NVIDIA controller for my Lenovo legion Pro, and then I ran windows automatically updates, which was fixed.

Press "Windows + I" to open Setting Click System. On the Display tab, click Advanced scaling settings under Scale and Layout Under "Let Windows try to fix apps so they’re not blurry", set the button to Off. This works on me.

A simple solution is to disable fast start in control panel power plane

This issue isn't due to malware but malware would and probably slow down your pc performance without you knowing this is just the Nvidia rtx drivers
