2016 nissan sentra sv engine like came on with the code P0171 (diagnostic trouble codes) and a most likely solution from power train system is to replace mass air flow sensor . @scottykilmer I need your suggestions
The lobster isn't screaming, it just has a leaky gasket.

Hey Scotty, I have a 1999 Pontiac grand am gt. I will be replacing the intake manifold gaskets but was told not to use OEM gaskets because they are made of a composite material. What are your thought on this and should I go with a Fel-pro PermaDry?

yes, felpro are better

***** ionly can say bad mechanic
I like it when you start with a very simple classification of the problem, too much air or not enough gas. But it's experience, knowing that on that engine the intake gaskets fail, that allows you to jump right to a definitive test. It's why the more challenging problems are more educational, since the veteran can't take shortcuts.
Scotty you're the man! This is exactly what was wrong with my Toyota. Car back to running with much better mileage and power now. This was a huge help to a nagging problem! Thank you!

Corollas that are old have this problem a lot and mine did (a 2000 with 275K miles).. It's a job for a mobile mechanic unless you have skills and tools and can remember what to put back and where... I'll never do it again, so why not just pay a skilled guy a small fee to do it with my Fel-Pro gasket. ??
Thanks Scotty. Kid home for weekend, car rough with this code. Tested, as per your video. $8 and 30 minutes later running smooth. He can now drive 4 hrs back to school! Thanks again
Damn experience is really something, you make umbolting parts from the engine look so easy.
Mr. Scotty you just motivated me to do my DIY intake gasket replacement, you're now my guru :) keep being amazing sir! God bless you!

Scotty, u r making me rich by all the money u r letting me save
I just put the intake manifold gasket without testing it with carb spray. Glad to find out that I was right, the old one was sitting flat and it was completely covered with dirty oil. Thanks Scotty for saving the day!
Fantastic video. Simple explanation and relevant video of each step. No fuss no muss. Perfect
As always, awesome video Scotty! Thanks for the great tip about spraying carb cleaner (!) on the intake manifold w/ engine running to listen for idle fluctuation--a brilliant time saver!!!
you are the man... gonna do this next paycheck... Got my codes read and found this video and low and behold this is my exact car so I have a feeling this might be the exact problem... Thanks again for a straight to the point video!
This helped ALOT ! My car was showing a P0171, So I jumped into youtube and saw this same clip, ran back to my car, did the spray cleaner test while the car was runing and indeed it afected the Idle and behavior of the engine while running. Now after, observing colsely, in my case , it wasnt exactly the mainfol gasked that was leaking in the air. It was acctualy the injector seal that wasn,t doing its job (i have a 2.3l ford escape2006 and the injectors are on the front of the head), and a replacement of the dount shaped little plastic pices made all of the difference. similar to what you demostrated here but slightly diferent area hat was not sealing properly. any way it was trough this test that i found what was happening to the car, so thanks Scotty.
Awesome vid Scotty! Love your sign offs, they crack me up...
Much Thanks! You Did it again Scotty. Once again I saved money thanks to you.
When I saw your video the first time, I thought.... this is just another crazy guy on you tube.... after I finish seeing your videos, I realized how wrong I was and now in my opinion, you are one of the most Honest Nonsense mechanic in KZread. Thank you for the videos Scotty their such a help and I learn so much your the man bro
You have saved me allot of money man. Thanks Scotty!!!
But, truly, you make very well edited, informative videos, I am a loyal subscriber,
Should also clean the throttle body and MAF while it's apart.
M respect to you scotty you, make me save tons of money by watching your videos.
Perfect, this was served up to me, after I cleaned my MAF sensor for the third time. I suspected it could be air cleaner (but cleaned that twice) or vac leak, but couldn't find anything. Now I have a backup plan if this last cleaning doesn't do, I've been hesitant to buy new MAF but others say they do go bad (just unlikely for Toyota). If the light returns (or might anyway) can of carb cleaner is ready. Thanks!
thats kinda kool way to check for leaks in gasket. did not know about that trick..thanks
Good video Scotty. Thank you for sharing
Great video Scotty!
Great stuff as always.
Scotty Rocks!!!! Love this guy!
Thanks cause you make things look so simple.
Nice the answer to my question lol , same car too , changed the intake manifold gasket and runs great , thx scotty
Just had this problem on my Escape V6, fixed it by changing 2 faulty ignition coils and all the 6 spark plugs, on top of that they also cleaned the MAF sensor and flushed out the air intake system. Now the car runs very well.
if it were only this easy on all vehicles. spot on Scotty!
OK thank u I always watch your KZread channel it's helps a lot. tomorrow after work I'm going to get me maf cleaner and carbon cleaner to see if there's any leaks
I like how you keep it real

Thanks for the tip. I have converted my -96 Ford from gas to E85 and not getting it to run 100%, fault p0171 keep comming up no matter what fuel pressure I adjusted it to. 3,5 bar was the most optimal. I did not think of the gasket, now I am checking that too!
Great tip about spraying carb cleaner by gasket and listen for idle change! Probably an old trick but new to me, like using cheap cigar for vacuum leaks or spraying water on running belts to isolate noise..hehe I'd swap the throttle body nitrile gasket...my toyo one was well shrunk/rotted after 12 years.& likely leaking coolant into air intake..just for added fun!
Great help love how you make it so easy

Thanks Scotty that was helpful I'm doing my manifold gasket today also just did my ignition coils it's a lot cheaper doing it yourself.
You make thing's look so easy.
Hi Scotty, great video thanks a ton. BTW is that a 1.8 Toyota engine you are changing the gasket on? Looks exactly like the Toyota engine in my Pontiac Vibe. Thanks again and Happy New Year to you and yours.

Good information
Thanks Scotty!
I had to do this on our 2002 Windstar. Just a tip to those of you who may attempt this - this video is exactly what you do, except if your intake has a coolant passage or two (you can tell by the coolant color around the hole), you must change the oil and filter before you crank the engine. Otherwise, you'll have some coolant in the crankcase which will destroy your engine bearings. As always, this is an awesome Scotty tip though -- those gaskets are cheap but paying a shop to do this simple task can cost a ton!
Your awesome man!
Love you videos scotty.thank you for doing this

Best mechanic and a veteran
Hi Scotty thanks for the video. My 2014 Mazda6 has the P0171 code stored and check engine light on sometimes, and after a while its off, but it seems to drive ok. Do I need to change the gasket like you did in the video or should I just leave it?
Great Tip
hi scotty, nice video, just a question, if the throttle body needs periodic cleaning, should the intake manifold also be periodically cleaned? thank you!
Your a great car Hero Scotty 😃😄
Hey Scotty love your video's man they are very helpfull but my 96 mitsubishi galant s has a hesitation when acceleration and the pedal seems to be sticking its hard enouph to were it jurks when it becomes unstuck
thnx, just replaced the gaskets on mine just today; seems the leak was mostly happening in winter but was simple enough:P
Scotty, a few things, is it important to disconnect any electrical lines? I've seen demonstrations of this where people disconnect as many things as they can and others where they disconnect as little as possible. Do you need to disconnect the negative battery line after the job is done to reset the computer to take off the warning light or will that disappear on its own after awhile?
Thanks so much ,now I know where to look next for why my cars a bit sluggish... For a topaz that's almost 30 years old I'd expect it may be the problem, I already flushed all the fliuds, changed all filters, cleaned out the throttle body, new idle control motor, throttle position sensor, and spark plugs and cables.I'm still learning all this stuff, really appreciate your videos. no one will teach me cuz I'm a girl so I have to teach myself and I have fun doing it ...can't wait to see what you post up next

Hey Scotty, you rock! I was wondering if I could use MAF cleaner instead of carb cleaner for this test?
So I have a 2009 GMC Sierra and it only throws a P0174 Lean in Bank 2. I’ve ran fuel injector conditioner (Lucas) as it says on the bottle every time I get gas till I empty the bottle. I’ve done that twice and if I quit and fill up a few times without Lucas and eventually my service engine light would reappear. The truck does have a Volant cold air intake just to add. Could I get your opinion on what you think I should do. I just poured a whole can of sea foam in the gas tank and filled it up today.
Hi Scotty, I'm doing this job on my corolla 2007. My question is do I need to use cleaner to clean the little holes for the gasket before I put the gasket back in?
Scotty, how can I try this on a 2011 Chevy Malibu 2.4L? The way it is designed is that the engine cover is part of the air intake system and so if I take the cover off to reveal the intake manifold, the throttle body is completely exposed, is that safe to do or will it cause problems?
good vid there scotty.

Scotty is the freakin man.
Hey Scotty, great video! I have a 2004 benz c230 i have replaced the gaskets on the intake, replaced vacuum lines... car is still getting this code and only po17. im out of ideas
Have you done any video on cleaning intake valves on a direct injected motor (Cx-7 in my case)?
I have a question Scotty, I have a 2005 honda accord lx sedan 2.4l it keeps getting the p0171 and p0139 code I have changed the o2 sensor, the air intake hose from the engine to the air box, spark plugs, mass airflow sensor, pcv valve, and some other thing related to it doesn't hesitate on acceleration at least I haven't noticed . I was wonder what advice you could give me because I have been trying to get these codes to go away and just can't seem to get them to. I will check the intake manifold gasket when it starts to warm up a little bit.
Do you have one if it run rich? Or how about if the intake man is good and has been replaced?
hi Scotty! I have a 2000 camry 4 cyl automatic; 5sfe engine. Is there a way to get the engine codes w/o an electronic scanner?
The end with the lobster part was hilarious
@scottyklimer I have check engine light on. Oil in ignition coil units and the following codes P0016, P0172 and P0139. My kia ceed 2010 is losing power and not accelerating or accelerates with lag. Any suggestions, will be grateful?
Scotty when removing the TB for cleaning or other work should I replace the gasket if there is one or is it reusable.
Hi, Scotty, I have a Ford F-150 and I get the codes PO171 and P0174, the thing is that they come and go, the check engine light is there for a couple of days and then it disappears; any ideas? Also, in principle would it be about the same to replace the gaskets on my ford as it was on the Toyota? Thanks
I got one for u Scotty. 2008 dodge ram 5.7 hemi 4x4, coming to a stop the truck just shut off right in the middle of traffic. Any suggestion?
hey Scotty, I'm having issues with my 2007 chevy hhr. code P0171, car crank to many times before stays on, any ideas on what to do? I already replaced mass sensor.
My 03 Pontiac vibe looks exactly like this under the hood and have the same code. It idles rough and has low power. I also have a p0770 code for a transmission solenoid E
where is the customary grunting noise when removing something?! i miss the "Uugh!" :D
Hey Scotty, I have a P0171 code on my 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo SS V6 engine. I changed the mass air flow sensor, but weeks later it wouldnt start unless if I press the gas pedal. I followed the steps on this video and my engine just stayed on idle. So I was wondering if you got any suggestions?
