I like it when you start with a very simple classification of the problem, too much air or not enough gas. But it's experience, knowing that on that engine the intake gaskets fail, that allows you to jump right to a definitive test. It's why the more challenging problems are more educational, since the veteran can't take shortcuts.

Corollas that are old have this problem a lot and mine did (a 2000 with 275K miles).. It's a job for a mobile mechanic unless you have skills and tools and can remember what to put back and where... I'll never do it again, so why not just pay a skilled guy a small fee to do it with my Fel-Pro gasket. ??

This helped ALOT ! My car was showing a P0171, So I jumped into youtube and saw this same clip, ran back to my car, did the spray cleaner test while the car was runing and indeed it afected the Idle and behavior of the engine while running. Now after, observing colsely, in my case , it wasnt exactly the mainfol gasked that was leaking in the air. It was acctualy the injector seal that wasn,t doing its job (i have a 2.3l ford escape2006 and the injectors are on the front of the head), and a replacement of the dount shaped little plastic pices made all of the difference. similar to what you demostrated here but slightly diferent area hat was not sealing properly. any way it was trough this test that i found what was happening to the car, so thanks Scotty.

Perfect, this was served up to me, after I cleaned my MAF sensor for the third time. I suspected it could be air cleaner (but cleaned that twice) or vac leak, but couldn't find anything. Now I have a backup plan if this last cleaning doesn't do, I've been hesitant to buy new MAF but others say they do go bad (just unlikely for Toyota). If the light returns (or might anyway) can of carb cleaner is ready. Thanks!

Great tip about spraying carb cleaner by gasket and listen for idle change! Probably an old trick but new to me, like using cheap cigar for vacuum leaks or spraying water on running belts to isolate noise..hehe I'd swap the throttle body nitrile gasket...my toyo one was well shrunk/rotted after 12 years.& likely leaking coolant into air intake..just for added fun!

I had to do this on our 2002 Windstar. Just a tip to those of you who may attempt this - this video is exactly what you do, except if your intake has a coolant passage or two (you can tell by the coolant color around the hole), you must change the oil and filter before you crank the engine. Otherwise, you'll have some coolant in the crankcase which will destroy your engine bearings. As always, this is an awesome Scotty tip though -- those gaskets are cheap but paying a shop to do this simple task can cost a ton!

Scotty, a few things, is it important to disconnect any electrical lines? I've seen demonstrations of this where people disconnect as many things as they can and others where they disconnect as little as possible. Do you need to disconnect the negative battery line after the job is done to reset the computer to take off the warning light or will that disappear on its own after awhile?

So I have a 2009 GMC Sierra and it only throws a P0174 Lean in Bank 2. I’ve ran fuel injector conditioner (Lucas) as it says on the bottle every time I get gas till I empty the bottle. I’ve done that twice and if I quit and fill up a few times without Lucas and eventually my service engine light would reappear. The truck does have a Volant cold air intake just to add. Could I get your opinion on what you think I should do. I just poured a whole can of sea foam in the gas tank and filled it up today.

Scotty, how can I try this on a 2011 Chevy Malibu 2.4L? The way it is designed is that the engine cover is part of the air intake system and so if I take the cover off to reveal the intake manifold, the throttle body is completely exposed, is that safe to do or will it cause problems?

I have a question Scotty, I have a 2005 honda accord lx sedan 2.4l it keeps getting the p0171 and p0139 code I have changed the o2 sensor, the air intake hose from the engine to the air box, spark plugs, mass airflow sensor, pcv valve, and some other thing related to it doesn't hesitate on acceleration at least I haven't noticed . I was wonder what advice you could give me because I have been trying to get these codes to go away and just can't seem to get them to. I will check the intake manifold gasket when it starts to warm up a little bit.

Hi, Scotty, I have a Ford F-150 and I get the codes PO171 and P0174, the thing is that they come and go, the check engine light is there for a couple of days and then it disappears; any ideas? Also, in principle would it be about the same to replace the gaskets on my ford as it was on the Toyota? Thanks

Hey Scotty, I have a P0171 code on my 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo SS V6 engine. I changed the mass air flow sensor, but weeks later it wouldnt start unless if I press the gas pedal. I followed the steps on this video and my engine just stayed on idle. So I was wondering if you got any suggestions?
