How to Fix a Surfboard - Very Bad Nose Ding

Спорт

Just a quick video showing one way to fix a very bad ding on the nose of a shortboard. Sorry the background music is crappy and too loud. I used Cab-o-sil to make the resin lighter and easier to sand. A piece of foam could've also been laminated to the board and sanded in place but I didn't have any foam lying around when I made this video. Q-cell, Micro balloons, and/or Sil-cell are easier to work with because they mix better and pour better and are easier to sand. Cab-o-sil takes longer to mix in to the resin, is more paste like, and harder to spread and fill dings, but it is stronger.
Sandpaper used in the video:
80 grit to rough up the old glass for good adhesion
120 grit to roughly shape the repaired area
320 grit to feather the new glass into the old
800 grit for finishing
Other materials used:
Sanding Resin
Laminating Resin
Catalyst
white color pigment
Cab-o-sil
6 oz fiberglass mat
disposable gloves
popsicle sticks, 3M blue tape, and Dixie cups
Thanks for watching!
Long live the Sea Wench!

    That answers my question regarding the capability of cabosil! I have a blown out center fin box on a Firewire Baked Potato. I’m going to experiment with installing a single fin box. I carved out an extended slot following the existing outline of the blow fin box using a Dremel. In hindsight, it’s a tad wider than ideal but based on your video, I should be ok with a resin cabosil blend. Thanks!

I saw some people use the same resin (sandable) for both two layers..does it make the difference? Can you get it on Amazon? Thanks so much for answering! Enrico

    Would have been "acceptable practice" to try mix white and, say, yellow ochre pigment to match the older, yellowing color? I have an old, thrashed 9' 8" I am repairing. It was tossed into the garbage near where I live. Dings water stains and even some mildew color on all the rails. Had to pull off delaminated glass in places... The board has certainly yellowed (and worse) since its 1996 birthday, so I am wondering if 1) I should mix a 'cream' color and do an opaque overlay, or if there is a paint (latex? oil-based? enamel sign paint?) you know of that can stand the over-lamination process. Also, have you ever laminated over sign-vinyl?

    Interesting repair. Came out looking the goods, do you know if it is still in tact? I would say that if I was approaching that ding, I would have cut all the material out from the nose (say to the green line edge that you first masked) leaving just the stringer. I then would have qcelled new foam to either side of the stringer and re shaped that foam. When glassing I would have cut the cloth into a triangle shape as opposed to a straight line as that straight line of cloth essentially creates a buckling or snapping point on the board. Good repair though and interesting to watch.

    Hey Dan, I'm working on fixing up the nose of my board and wanted to know how long does the qcell mixture take to form the fluffy consistency? Also my first layer was runny and there are tons of airbubbles so I had to sand it quite a bit. Should I add another layer of the sand resin until it is flush with the edges?

  • @DantheFixitMan

    @DantheFixitMan

    7 жыл бұрын

    The q-cell takes a bit of mixing until it will be consistently light. If you had a lot of air bubbles, try stirring or mixing a little slower. If it was still really runny, you might try adding more q-cell. Yes, I would add another layer of the sanding resin, or sanding resin with more q-cell until it is flush with the fiberglass on the rest of the board, then go to the laminating stages. Hi Dan, Dan here also:).. Is it possible to restore an old board with dings and dents and such by using the same foam? In other words, if I didn't want to paint the board and hide the patches, could I 'glue' little pieces of foam in the dents and then resin over that making an almost seamless patch? I may even remove all resin/glass and take the board down to foam. The board will have about a dozen patches and the previous owner did some very rough patches as well so I just want to redo the whole thing. The hard part will identifying what type of foam was used as I have no experience with foam. So far I have built a hollow wooden only.. Thanks for video, I did subscribe!

    Hi nice video! I started to repair my shortboard broken nose. It misses maybe a 4 cm of foam of one side of the stringer (not as bad as your board). I have a question, maybe you can help me you with your experience: it'd a better solution not to fill all the nose area with q cell but instead cut a piece of foam and then fill the remaining area with q cell? I ask that because I am a little concerned about the weight of the board Thank you

    Great Question Cameron, If you have some foam available, it would probably be a little lighter than the resin mixed with q cell or glass bubbles. At the time I made this repair, I didn't have any foam available or any old boards lying around. The process is still basically the same, but you would just use a little resin to 'glue' the foam into place and then you could sand it to the correct shape and proceed with the laminating process. This board is still being surfed every once in a while by my brother and he hasn't complained about it being too heavy or anything like that. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man

You can also do this in stages if you don't get enough material on the board the first time. And you can always add more material if needed. It gets easier the more times you do it. Why do you use a different resin (laminating resin) on the glass? Can't you use the normal sanding resin (so use the same resin for everything)?

  • @DantheFixitMan

    @DantheFixitMan

    4 жыл бұрын

    That’s a great question. Because the laminating resin remains tacky after curing, you can add another coat or layer of resin without any surface prep or sanding between coats of resin. When you use sanding resin, you need to sand it in between coats to get the best adhesion on subsequent coats. Sanding resin is basically the same as laminating resin, but is has wax additives that make it easier to sand. If you try to sand laminating resin, it just gums up the sandpaper.
