How to fix a mower that dies when the blades are engaged

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My Badboy mower started dying when engaging the blades. This video shows how to test the PTO switch to see if that is the cause.

    lol this is the girl in the pictures boyfriend, but i have two john deer stand ups both with over 400 hours on them, one will shut off and usually come right back on rarely will you have to recrank while the blades are engaged after i use it all day or if it’s just real hot in general i’ve had a problem with people being too light and when they go over bumps it shuts off while the PTO was engaged you can see a spring that from what i believe connects the plate you stand on and the safety switch, but my other mower never has had a problem. does that sound like the spring is just worn out and never was as tight/ stiff as the one on my other mower

    and the warmer it gets the more elastic it becomes hence why it seems worse the hotter it is

    I would make sure the switch is in the correct position, may need adjusted. Then I would swap the springs and see if problem happens on the other mower. The if the problem is still there I would swap the switches, if the problem stays with which ever mower the switch is on then you know it's a bad switch. It could also be you PTO switch going out. My PTO switch didn't go out all at one and for a while I could make it work by flipping the switch several times until the mower would stay running. Yours could just be acting up when you hit a bump or when it warms up.

    Great video! My issue started with it dying when I engaged the blades and graduated to not engaging at all. I replaced the switch and still no engagement. Can you think of anything else I can try?

    Thanks, sorry for the late reply. if you are still having a problem i would suggest checking the new switch just to make sure its not bad also. after that i would start checking all the safety switches like the seat and arm bar switches.

    will try this...but for now, let me ask what it could be if the pto kills engine only when engine is cold. but if engine is good and warm then it doesnt kill engine when pto is engaged.

    I think it is best to let them warm up first, I usually let it idle for about 5 minuets and then full throttle for about 30 seconds before engaging the blades. Also my PTO switch didnt just go out all at once and i could usually pop it up and down 10 to 15 times to get it to work.

    Can you help me figure out why my Kohler 24hp keeps losing power when going uphill while cutting, it didn't do that when I first bought it, but after the first carburetor failed it's been terrible.

    Sounds like it could be a coil pack, while the engine is off, unplug one of the spark plug wires then start the engine. if it starts, turn it off and put the plug wire back on and repeat for the other side. These small v twin engines can run idle fine on one cylinder. If it wont start that is a very good indication of a bad coil pack. I have had this happen twice on this mower.

    Hey there! Mine is doing something similar except my blades will actually engage. They are bogged down like crazy tho. Could it still be the PTO switch?

  • @shelbydowning1986

    @shelbydowning1986

    I wouldn't think so, when they go out it's either on or off. If it's bogging down when the blades are engaged, I would 1st make sure the under side of the deck is clear and not packed full of grass/dirt, 2nd take the belt off and see if any pulley's are hard to turn, 3rd, could be a clogged up fuel filter, 4th, it could be a coil pack. Coils are super easy to test. With the engine turned off unplug one spark plugs and try to start the engine, if it starts then the coil is good, turn the engine off put plug wire back on and take the other plug wire off and try to start again. These little V twin engines will idle perfectly on one cylinder.

    @@shelbydowning1986 thanks for replying. I'm a little late at getting back to this but after checking a few things and changing the fuel filter, it wound up being the left coil pack. We changed both just because and she runs like a dream again. Turns out my husband knows a thing or two😂 but we ladies tend to be stubborn and try to tackle it ourselves. He took one look at it a knew what it was 🤦‍♀️ Thanks again!

    @@shelbydowning1986 ......Great tip.... go right to the end and see if it works with one cylinder rather than mess about with the coil packs etc .... I reset my air gaps to .25mm per the Deere handbook and installed new spark plugs and cleaned the carb out 100% including the 2 jets. It now ticks over beautifully but bogs down in long grass although it doesn't stop. I will try this one at a time cylinder test after the carb gasket rebuild tomorrow. Yes switched out the pump and fuel solenoid... I feel I am getting closer.... Valve gaps next

    My blades will only turn on if idle is turned down all the way. Then I have to slowly turn it up higher.

    That is odd, it that the way its supposed to be? If mine is not at least 90% throttled up then it will die.
