How to Fix a Logitech K380 Keyboard (unresponsive key) or Most Any Other Membrane Type Keyboard

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Saving a Logitech K380 from the landfill.
Update!-Feb 2022:
Good news: The ‘g’ key still works!
Bad news: A whole bunch of other keys stopped working. I can tell they’re tied together and lost connection. Some other people in the comments had similar issues. Anyway, this keyboard just really wasn’t built to last and I can’t recommend buying this thing anymore (unless you go into it knowing you’re buying a disposable keyboard and… well, who wants to do that?). Anyway, gonna see if I can salvage this thing again but I’m busy with other videos so that update video could take a while. But in the meantime, I do still stand by this repair if you can diagnose it easily. If you want to attempt it, I took the keyboard apart and took high-res pictures of the membrane and its traces that could help you. You can find those here: aboycandream.com/logitech-k380-membrane-traces/.

    I have the same model keyboard, but the plastic pieces are slightly different than his. My plastic pieces only has the side tabs that go into the side holes. Put the 2 pieces together with your fingers BEFORE resting the entire piece into the keyboard slots. It is much easier this way for everyone else that has the same pieces like me.

    Gotta commend your perseverance on this repair. I'm just wondering wouldn't it be quicker and neater to use conductive copper tape to mend the trace after exposing it instead of using this paste? Or would the thickness of copper tape be too much between the membranes? Either way congrats on getting it working again.

  • @a_boy_can_dream

    @a_boy_can_dream

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I did have the crazy idea of trying to use real gold leaf. But I didn’t have any and that’d be expensive. The tricky thing with that copper tape would be getting it to stick reliably. I wasn’t even sure the paste would work but I spilled some on my smooth table and I really had to scrape to get it off. So far it’s holding up well. Time will tell. Thanks for the kind words though.

The silicon rubber that springs back the button is torn 😑 What is the best adhesive that I can use, without compromising its springing function... I am afraid if use industrial glue, it will harden the rubber...

    Yeah, you’re right, I think using the wrong glue will just make things worse. How ‘brand new’ is ‘brand new’? Maybe it’d be worth it to try to use the warranty. Silicone caulk is a possibility but I don’t think it’d repair the tear. And I don’t want to make it worse. Hope you can figure something out!

  • @a_boy_can_dream

    @a_boy_can_dream

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Kai. If it’s working but the key just isn’t pressing right… well, if you can live with that, I’d say leave it alone. But if it’s causing problems when typing: well, you can slice the nib off at the base. I’d use a sharp x-acto knife or an olfa cutter with the blade snapped off like I used in the video. But you really want a clean cut because tearing up the base or top will ruin it. Then, just lay it in that space in the scissor mechanism (just loose-no need for glue or anything like that) and put the key back. But I’d really recommend against doing all this if you can. That nub is really small and hard to work with and you may end up losing it. And I’d hate to ruin the keyboard.

  • @a_boy_can_dream

    @a_boy_can_dream

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Colleen. Well, it's worth a try! :D But maybe you don't have to go through all that trouble. If you spilled something like coke or juice on it then maybe the pads just got gummed up. If the keys stopped working one by one, then maybe you don't need to cut the membrane and can just try to clean the pads for the broken keys. Try cleaning between the membrane pads with little pieces of cotton and alcohol (you can get access like shown in the video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pmiItMSjkrXVorg.html) and see if that works. If a bunch of keys stopped working at exactly the same time then it could be a common trace and then you'll need a multimeter to probe around and see if things are running back to the ribbon cable. Also open it up and make sure the liquid didn't get on the circuit board. That could be really bad. Anyway, good luck!

    Hey Arvind. Check that the hooks the scissor mechanism attaches to on the keyboard are still there. There shoud be two hooks on the top and two on the bottom. I heard they changed the layout so they could also look like tabs. Either way, you should be able to see damage if they don’t look the same on the left and right side. Some people were saying you could just press the key back on with the scissor mechanism attached (for the new layout). If that doesn’t work, I’d try taking apart the scissor mechanism and attaching it to the keyboard first and then pressing the key on. I gave instructions on how to do that in the video. This is all assuming there’s no damage to the hooks and the plastic tabs they connect to.

    Hey, my keyboard works but the Enter key came off and I can't seem to get it back on. It doesn't seem to have the same notch as the letter keys have on the scissor mechanism. Any ideas on how to reinstall it?

    Boy, you guys are really making me work over here. ... I added a link to a short clip and pics of the Enter Key to the bottom of the description of this vid. Check the pic of the underside of the Enter Key. If any of those tabs or notches are broken, that could be the problem. If they're intact, it just takes a bit of finagling to make sure the metal bars and everything else is lined up. I had to try a few times but it finally all snapped in place. Best of luck!

    You were lucky that the trace was damaged very close to where the key hits, what if the trace is open in the back under the alluminum sheet covering that is plastic soldered to the case (logitech mfks). In that scenario is there any solution? My spacebar, g, c, 0 and 2 keys stopped working after i spilled water on it. I may try your fix but it seems quite messy with that fix glue.

    I wrote an update in the description saying a bunch of other keys went out. I really think these keyboards are just junky and not made to last. Sad, because they’re really nice to use. Anyway, I added links to pics of the traces in the description so you can see what’s under there. And then I fixed an Apple keyboard here using what I would have done to the k380: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoaHw7ayaZm0pdo.html Sadly, it’s pretty involved and did it just to see if I could.

    @@a_boy_can_dream That's great man. Thanks. I went to your vlog and saw the pictures, really useful. When I spilled the water over the keyboard I putted it in rice, the next day some keys were activating by themselves and others were inputting other keys. I applied heat with a hairdrier to the back metal sheet, probably there I did some damage to the membrane and traces, right? Because otherwise the only option is that corrotion damaged the traces, I mean I don't think there is physicall damage to the traces (aka, scratches). No water went to the electronics board. So each key has two traces? From the top membrane and the bottom one? I assume one of those traces is common to all keys and when one presses the key the circuit closes. could it be that some keys even have more common traces? Any recomendations to remove the metal sheet of 07:29? It's only attached through those plastic like rivets? I would cut them or burn them. could it be glued after repair or you have any other idea to put it in place again? Thanks again for your content and replies. You are the only one with videos like this. Keep up the good work!

    "could it be that some keys even have more common traces?" I did a quick explanation of it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoaHw7ayaZm0pdo.html But just watch the 15 seconds or so. The whole video is too long lol. As for taking out the rivets, you can just press a sharp flat-head screw driver on the rivet and twist. They come out real easily. But getting them back in is another story. Really, as junky as these keyboards are, I'm not sure if you'd want to go kill yourself. I do think it's possible but it's real hard and time-intensive. If you're at the point of giving up, I can make one recommendation. But only if you are at the point where you're ready to just throw it away. I don't want to recommend anything and be responsible for you losing your keyboard. But if it was just water damage and you do accept that it's already gone and you want to try one last thing: you could take out the PCB and try soaking the whole keyboard (without the PCB) in alcohol. Alcohol can get into smaller places than water and will displace any water that is still in your keyboard. You can use ethanol or isopropryl alchol. DO NOT use acetone--it will melt everything. Then... just give it quite some time to dry out. Of course I'm not sure if you really did damage things when you used the hair dryer. Again, ONLY try this if you're ready to throw it away. From my end, it's a long shot try and I would hate to give you bad advice.

    @@a_boy_can_dream 😭 I won't accept the death of my little k380, yes, he is in agony but still breathing. About the alcohol idea it's is a good one but I don't think there is any water left in between the membranes. The water spill was months ago, by now probably everything just evaporated. I now get it about the matrix disposition of the traces. It makes sense. Im using the broken keys as a way to justify building a new habit of using macros in my mouse side buttons. Autohotpie is a nice radial menu software where you can program which keys you want to be in the menu. Im developing muscle memory and since I use mathcad, autocad, this will help me be faster at them even though I'm much slower now at typing and googling stuff haha Don't worry about being responsible for any wrong fixes. Your videos are really useful, you are just trying to help. In some near future I will try to fix it and I will tell you how it went. For now let's just curse at the developers of this keyboards.

    Hmm… If it happens to different keys and not all the time, you can try resetting the keyboard. To do that, with the keyboard on, press: esc o esc o esc b. That’s the escape button and letters ‘o’ and ‘b’. If you do it correctly, all three lights on the bluetooth modes 1, 2 and 3 will blink. Then you just have to re-pair. Hope that works. If not and it only happens to one key all the time, and you didn’t get water damage, then there’s probably a problem with the key.

    In the description I added a link to my site that has pics of the traces. For many of the keys, it looks like the trace goes all the way through but you can see that they just overlap the bottom trace and you’ll see a little shadow line to see they’re separate and on different layers. But yes, there are a few keys where the trace goes all the way through on the top layer.

  • @a_boy_can_dream

    @a_boy_can_dream

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, if you trace those leads back to where the ribbon cable connects to the pcb, you can solder to the solder joints of the ribbon cable connectors. But finding a switch small enough to fit under the keycap and getting it to stay in place is going to be extremely difficult. Making an entire mechanical keyboard and using that bluetooth module would be an idea though. I want to do that myself down the line.

    Maybe the plastic switch isn’t making contact with the switch lever. Also, check the metal connections for the battery are still in the correct place. They can be moved when putting the case back on. I say take it apart again and try to turn it on while looking at these parts.

    If you mean, you see a trace going into the pad on either side, that probably means it’s the common or ground (meaning it’s connected to other keys down the line). If there were problems with that pad, it’d probably mean a bunch of other keys are not working as well. Use a multi-meter to check the connections to the ribbon cable are fine. But if it’s only that one key that’s messed up, I’d guess that the problem is with the other pad.
