    Dude, thank you for the great video. But, as an electrician, I would like to point out a few small details, Safety First! Might I suggest that you advise people to unplug the microwave first, before touching anything. Especially before probing inside an area they are unfamiliar with, with a metal tool, that contains capacitors. Just behind the metal Grill is a capacitor pack, that can deliver a wallop of electricity if someone touches it inadvertently. They need to know that even after it's been unplugged they can be shocked and possibly bad. Even though I know that they are not always accessible to the average person, I would suggest they wear some type of insulated glove or a fuse puller to remove the fuse. At least at a minimum be aware what a capacitor looks like, so they don't accidentally touch it. But, thanks for the great video.

    Yes. That capacitor will stop a heart and doesn't have to be plugged in to do so. Remember that similar capacitors save lives by restarting hearts.

    El Cornejo- Thanks for the comment on this. I changed the fuse with the exact same one. However, instead of fixing it. It made it worse. It used to turn on (i.e. clock, light, turntable moving) just without power/heating. But the moment I changed the fuses, it turnon for 1 sec and died. Now everything is not working even the light/clock/turntable. Any ideas what went wrong?

    Sir, I can not thank you enough for posting this video. I followed what you did, step by step and sure enough the fuse had blown. I never even knew there was a fuse in there. I popped the fuse out went to my local Home Depot and was able to purchase a 5 pack of replacement 20 amp fuses for under $3.00. Came home, plugged in the fuse put the pieces back on and had the microwave up and running in less than 5 minutes. You saved me from calling in a tech from GE at god knows how much $. Again, Thank you and be well!!

Instead, because of this video it only cost me $10 for the fuse and I did it myself. That’s a savings of right around $125, so thank you!

The manual also did not mention this fuse. Fortunately this video prompted me to take another look and sure enough I had a blown bus fuse. I actually have two and they look different but same idea. Thank you.

    We have this model and, thanks to you, I opened it up, found the fuse, replaced it and it's working perfectly! However, if the fuse blows again when you open the door before the cycle is done, it's probably your door switch. It's a safety backup. If the door switch is bad, it won't shut off the microwave when you open the door, but it will blow the fuse. Replace the door switch, then the fuse.

    @Fisher Man if it’s dead even after changing the fuse, check your receptacle. Does it have current? If so unplug the mic and plug it back in. If you know how, check for current across the fuse while plugged in.

  • @terryjones8360

    @terryjones8360

    Жыл бұрын

    @Fisher Man Can you check for current across the fuse? Don't mess with this if you don't know how. Microwaves can be dangerous. Better to pay someone to look at it or buy a new one than to get electrocuted. If you know what you're doing and you have current across the fuse, then it could be the door switches. There's two of them. Replace both. There's also the plate that the door switches attach to that can wear out. These are generally plastic and wear out easily. If it's worn, you'll have to replace it as well. I ended up replacing all of the above and it finally works.

    Before you go to the trouble of replacing the fuse, try this first - simply unplug it from the power receptacle for an hour. My mom had the same issue with her GE microwave. I think it was an issue of the microwave getting too hot. We plugged it back in after about an hour and everything worked fine. All we had to do was reset the clock.

    Had the same GE Microwave JVM3160RF5SS Model and bought it from Lowes on 2/26/2019 and as of early May barely in its 15th month it blew out the fuse here which was out of the warranty of 12 months. But this happened only after two earlier 20A breaker trip at the main panel box on two separate occasions. GE repair technician came by and diagnosed a bad fuse and so went on to replace with new fuse but it blew again when the door is opened while powered on. The repair according to GE practice is to replace the whole door with its two door switches so that it does not cause the same problem mentioned here. Cost more now to fix than the original microwave price! Design error by GE in not able to handle the power surge cut out when the door handle is opened while powered on. If you need to use it then beware of this design error by letting the microwave run its course when powered or by cancelling the power with the key pad. Any interruption of the door will most certainly blow the fuse again!

    I know just enough about electric and electronics to be dangerous, but I watched this video and examined my device. Yes, the fuse was blown. I took it out and it was a 20 amp, 125 volt buss fuse. Other comments below mention 250 volts. I went to Lowe's and got a 5-pack for $1.88. Replaced the fuse - video was very helpful, by the way - and the panel lit up. Just to try it out, I put a meatball in the oven and pressed the 1-minute button (rather than put 15 seconds on it). I opened the door at around 15 seconds elapsed and the fuse blew again. That was when I remembered that I had interrupted the cycle the same way when it conked out the first time. I replaced the fuse again, entered a smaller amount of time and waited for completion. It worked this time and has been since, but neither have I interrupted the cycle since. Now I'm wondering what that had to do with blowing the fuse, and if there is some other problem I should be worried about. The oven is about 5 years old. And thanks much for the video, by the way.

Then I tried to heat a cup of water and the power cut out a split second after hitting the 1-minute express cook button. New fuse #1 blown. I installed new fuse #2 and plugged into a different outlet. Again the light and the display came on. Tried express cook and blew new fuse #2. I give up. Time for a new microwave oven. Great video. Very helpful. This never happens to me but this time I had the same model with the screws in the same locations as well as the fuse. I could hear the pop when it failed. The fuse was blown and usually it is necessary to find the cause of fuse failure but when I pulled the fuse I saw that it was full of moisture and that is why it failed. Got a 10 pack of fuses for about $6 on-line and will probably never use the other 9? This is the first video that I watched on this topic and it saved me $250.00 for a new unit. Thank you very much.

    Thank you for this video. I used a Bussmann microwave fuse (1/4" x 1-1/4") from Home Depot ($3.50 for two). I had trouble getting out the screw that he took out at the 3:24 time in the video. I ended up buying the same screwdriver that he recommends and with that screwdriver it was easy. My grill (the black plastic part running along the top) was brittle (from age) and had multiple parts of it crack as I took it out. This was not due to me being careful, it was due to it being brittle. All of the cracked parts are hidden when it is put back, but one part that cracked was the part that holds the first screw that needs to be removed during this process. To replace this part will cost at least $35 and possibly up to $150. I taped it in place using packing tape and this is practically invisible - it also can only be seen when the oven is open.

Though I had power at the outlet, there was no clock display, light in the microwave, or keypad functionality. Congrats to all of you who saved on a service call by using this wonderful video, but in my case, replacing the fuse was unfortunately not the culprit; so I decided to get a new unit. Thank you GE for having a worthless toll-free helpline: you just lost a customer for any new appliance purchases.

    Just repaired my daughters GE microwave. Same problem, blew the fuse. Did some trouble shooting and found the bottom normally closed switch was staying closed with door closed causing a dead short. Also, some units have a 20 amp fuse and will not blow but trips breaker. I suspect your fuse could blow again. Check switches!

    thanks so much for posting this, two year old GE profile went out and wasn’t aware it was a simple as the fuse. Changed in a matter of minutes. One tip for anybody watching this video, the first front plate that he took off on some of them you have to slide to the left and pull forward. Otherwise it was pretty much the same process as what’s in the video here. Thanks again for posting this!

    You might want to note that a higher amperage fuse like that (20A) usually doesn't just blow for a minor reason, there is usually a short condition or something abnormal that caused it to blow in the first place (like a bad monitor interlock switch). I'd hate for people to overpay $11 for one fuse on Amazon and just have that blow again as soon as they start the microwave. There's nothing really special about the fuse and it should be a standard 3AG style that I can buy locally for $1.00 (5-pack)

  • @RichardFallstich

    @RichardFallstich

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, fuses don't blow for no reason. That would be a pretty poor design - randomly blowing fuses. I had the issue with the monitor interlock switch. The switch wasn't bad, it worked exactly as designed. It shorted the primary of the HV transformer, which essentially shorts the main incoming power cord. This would happen when opening the door while oven was running. The oven is supposed to stop but not blow the fuse when opening during operation. [The maker of the video says his quit while running, heating water, No mention of opening the door or when.] The switch bracket became loose after a several years of use. This caused the monitor switch to actuate before the primary interlock. Don't know exactly why bracket loosened, maybe someone failed to properly install it during assembly. I replaced bracket and switch (since it had full overload current at least once go thru it) and unit is running fine for past few months.
