I'm a bride who's altering her own dress. I've made plenty of dresses from patterns but I haven't done much altering of someone else's work. I have to say your videos have saved me so many times! This one in particular has made a huge difference of the amount of work I've needed to put into making the bodice fit properly. This dart method worked like a charm to bring the length of my straps down without them crowding into my armpits. Thank you for making these videos! They are soo helpful!!!

Great advice! I had to do a couple of darts on my own wedding dress 20 years ago, and although I know how to do darts, it was the lifting of the lace and the finishing that I had trouble with. Also the beads started falling off immediately within the first few snips, but it turned out to be hardly noticeable.

this was incredibly helpful. ive done this sort of thing for friends but i did not do it this way and there was a buttload more hand sewing. i quilt and i have free motion foot for my machine i just never ever thought about using it this way! thank you. although i did almost have a heart attack when you were zooming around those pins hahahah

How would you tighten a gap if it’s very small yet noticeable? I’ve added a piece of clear elastic along the inside edge to hold it close to the body.

I use the same technique. Only difference is I hand sew the lace down. :)

So how would you do this same alteration on a satin gown where you can’t hide a dart! So frustrating. Thanks.

I’m going to do this to one of my gowns. It also kinda is held out from her body? Fits her hips great. Might also need taken in a little from the back at the side bodice? And of course it has lace and beading on sheer back 🤦🏻‍♀️ more than one alteration to fit!

I usually stitch over the edges to prevent fraying.

Thank you for this video. I am taking in a back like you demonstrated. Did you trim the dart before sewing the lace down? The dress I am altering has several layers of tulle that the lace is sewn onto, so would I need to trim the dart? Would it be better just to cover the dart with the lace , like what you are doing in the video?

I try not to trim when I can leave it and hide it. Someone may want to let it out someday.

Thank you for sharing this! I love your videos, they are useful when I'm trying to explain to my clients about the amount of 'work' that goes into alterations. I'm curious about how you just lift the presser foot to applique the lace, surely this disengages your tension? Is this not a problem for you or am I missing something?

Yes & yes. This is an outer thigh/knee lift. It does disengage tention. I mention in great detail how to navigate that issue & why I like it that way in my hemming lace applique tutorial, I think. Go check that one out & see if it's the one.

The bride has to be okay with perfectly placed, smooth darts. Some mind it & some don't. They really aren't obvious when done well & pressed.

Would you use this same technique for the front of the dress if it was gaping there? I made a dress that gapes at the front, I had thought it was the armscye I needed to alter at first, however seeing where the lady has pinned it to fit herself, the armscye is fine, but the bust side is not..

Yes, it is. But brides are not really limited by what "can be done" as much as they are limited by the skill set of their local seamstresses. Therefore, this is a question for your local seamstress. Good luck with your gown project! :D ❤

Hi! It's me again lol your #1 fan and most apt pupil. I have watched this video several times, I have applied every piece of knowledge you gave, and it worked PERFECTLY.... except for the left side. Is it because our bodies are bigger on one side? Or am I just nuts? I mirrored my darts along the back but that left side is being a booger and refuses to lay down correctly. Any extra tips, Miss Brenda?

Hey!! One side is almost always shaped differently than the other. I probs shoulda mentioned that in the video. Darts often cannot be mirrored perfectly, bc they may need to be higher, lower, or bigger on one side that the other. This is one of those things that you have to eyeball it a lil. 😁👍

Not really. Off shoulder dresses can be quite constricting. There are other things to do to make it less-so, but it’ll never be fully comfortable. Check out my video on drape sleeves.

Dart if you can. --That's likely something you can easily do with the ruched one. If you can't for either, then try this technique. It's the same concept, just in the back. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ipyeqdqYmKyul9o.html

I wish you had done my alterations. My dress was hanging off me and looked awful ( it didn't even make it through the dinner) and I paid £100's for the work.

What about if the dart is creating a bulge at the tip of the dart? How do you get it to lie down?

You round out the tip. Instead of a triangle, it has a rounded-off point. On a lace overlay gown, you typically lift the lace off, do the darts, & then hand sew the lace back down, pressing on a ham with a tailor's clapper.

@@BridalSewing do u ever do FaceTime to help a person do the tailoring by chance? I feel I got the bustle good, and possibly the length, but she has tank top sleeves (not spaghetti strap but About 1.5 inch in thickness) we only need to go in about 2 inches right on the top of each sleeve where the sewing line comes together( 1 inch on each side) So i feel it shouldn't be toooo hard. But I'm nervous. Unless you got a dress like that u can show:))

It depends. I usually charge about 15$ for a contour stitch. For darts that require lace repositioning, it varies based upon complexity.

I love the glue but it’s hard for me to get the cap back on it before the product bubbles out! Lol

I have found that with any glue in a metal tube, you usually don't even need to squeeze it to apply it, as it comes out on its own. So, minute pressure is best. Also, if you kind of lightly grasp the tube at the top and make a slight pulling motion, it will usually suck it back in enough to replace the cap cleanly. I hope I explained that well enough 😬

It depends on how much lace work/ bead work you have to do. This wasn't too awfully bad. Somewhere around 45-65 for this. Will vary widely based on location.
