    You should try an epoxy stick to rebuild the missing plastic piece, test it out on a shell you don't care about and if it comes out great and works really well you can use it on the rare shell you showed at the end.

  • @Retro.Revolution

    @Retro.Revolution

    6 ай бұрын

    Thank you, and very good point! That is the only thing about this method, it kind of obsoletes future work being done to the DS. I say kind of, because if you want to reshell it months or years later, then the shell that you purchase has everything you need; besides the metal hinge piece that we superglued in place. So if you (or someone who uses this method) wants to reshell their console after they do this, then all they gotta do is purchase another hinge, which is fortunately very cheap on eBay. If you don't want to reshell, and you need to disassemble the top part still, then it will be difficult, but honestly not a nightmare. You won't be able to reuse the hinge, or the top inside shell piece, but that's honestly it. It's still pretty easy to disassemble, it'll just take some force to get the super glue to 'snap' out of its place and to break. Not too much though!

    Is the 24 hr glue dry wait from glue to use? Or from gluing then screwing back together?

  • @Retro.Revolution

    @Retro.Revolution

    Ай бұрын

    Both; when you screw the hinge cover back to the housing, there is some tension that pulls the hinge. If the glue hasn't dried, then it'll turn the hinge piece slightly, which will make it dry slightly out of place. Then, the hinge will feel off, and the points where it 'snaps' into the intended viewing angles will be off. So I'd 100% recommend waiting 24 hours to reassemble it

  • @Retro.Revolution

    @Retro.Revolution

    2 күн бұрын

    It is the same general idea! There are two hinges though and there isn't any way to properly pre-position them like I demonstrated in this video though. So one hinge could be the correct way, one hinge could be the wrong way. But at least it'd still work better than the hinges being loose!

  • @HachiKamuri

  • @Retro.Revolution

    @Retro.Revolution

    4 ай бұрын

    Yes! If you're planning to go back and open it up in the future, then only super glue the bottom part of the hinge to the top inside shell piece; don't put any super glue on top of the hinge, or on the top outside shell piece. The super glue on the one shell piece will be enough to hold it and will 100% be strong enough, just make sure it dries fully before touching it. Then in the future when you go to disassemble, the top assembly will disassemble like normal, and the only pieces glued together will be the hinge and the top inside shell piece (the piece that has the crack on it). I hope that helps, if it's confusing at all then let me know!

    Is it normal for the top display to just, tilt slightly when you open it? Also is a clicky sound normal?

  • @Retro.Revolution

    @Retro.Revolution

    3 ай бұрын

    Yes, and yes. If the top display tilts slightly when you open it, then the hinge wasn't 100% seated correctly in its position while drying in the super glue. That had happened a lot to me in the past, but it mostly only ever happened when I reassembled the hinge cover back on and screwed the 2 long screws into it through the bottom inner plate. Doing so slightly turns the hinge in the glue, which results in the top display to be slightly misaligned when opened. It can still be slightly misaligned even if you don't reassembly anything though like I said if it simply wasn't seated 100% correctly. It can be tricky to get them seated 100% depending on how much plastic has cracked or broken off But the clicking sound is normal though, does it make a click sound when the hinge is moving/snapping into its positions?

    My ds lite does not have this issue yet but I have a few questions. First of all, do these hinges break from normal use? (While taking good care of the device, never dropping it, etc…) if they do. Will this fix make them not do so ever again?

  • @lavrynn

    @lavrynn

    hey! ive had a ds since around 2010, took very good care of it and never dropped it. the hinge works just fine on it after 14ish years, so it shouldnt crack on its own

  • @motivationmaster927

    @motivationmaster927

    2 ай бұрын

    @@lavrynn yeah I also think mine has gotten kind of inmune to hinge breaking from normal use due to the fact that the hinges are quite weak, what I mean is that it doesn't feel like they are making much force against the plastic to keep it in possition at all, which is good but also bad because tiny movements can put it on it's secondary possition.

  • @Retro.Revolution

    @Retro.Revolution

    2 ай бұрын

    They definitely shouldn't break from normal use. The only scenario where it may possibly break from normal use is if it sits out in the sun for extended periods of time, multiple times throughout its life. The sun will weaken the plastic and will make it brittle (specifically the Gloss Silver and Metallic Rose colors; not so much for other colors). But after it sits in the sun so much, even a simple movement like opening the hinge could cause it to eventually crack and break. This fix will last forever from normal use. However it's still prone to breaking if you drop it or physically abuse it, just the same as before it broke

    Hey idk if you still read these comments, but when I opened up the DS after waiting 24 hours, I opened it slowly (clearly not slowly enough) and the hinge motor snapped. What is your suggestion for getting the hinge motor out of the hole on both sides?

  • @Retro.Revolution

    @Retro.Revolution

    2 күн бұрын

    I'm really sorry for that! For the actual hinge piece, to remove it, just open up the console as far as you did in the video. Ans then from there you'll be able to pull the hinge out. Because of the dried glue though you might not be able to fit another one in unless you scrape the dried glue out. It'll kinda be like plastic

  • @Retro.Revolution

    It shouldn't; the only issue it would cause would be a bad top screen. However, as long as there was no sudden impact that caused the hinge to break, then the top screen cable should be fine. If the top screen isn't glitching out at all at any specific angle, then you should be all good :)

  • @Retro.Revolution

    @Retro.Revolution

    4 ай бұрын

    Very interesting question, really good idea! I think it'd work out really well if the hinge first got super glued and then fixed, and then after the glue is dry to then epoxy it. Definitely worth a shot, the only concerning thing is, the epoxy would have to be shaped perfectly to match the curve of the rest of the shell piece, otherwise if it's protruding any, then it'll scratch against the shell piece and will make the hinge rough. I'll have to try it someday!

  • @chinesestatemedia

    @@Retro.Revolution I was thinking it's possible to pour it in as close as you can, then sand it down? Not sure though, haven't really worked with epoxy much. Plus, I also wanted to sand down the entire shell, to do a custom paint job, so didn't really think about the possibility of messing up the rest of the shell. But I have like 4 DS with their hinges in varying stages of broken, so I may try it if I find some spare time. Thanks for the video, really cool!
