    Fonzi... i have made some ball busting comments in the past on your vids on the past, but dude... you break this down so well in terms that help us... no other company or product makes so much effort to educate it's customers so well, thank you. I just got done changing one of the colors of my stock paint job using plasti dip. And these vids made it possible.

    I used to do auto body and paint you need a small 3 m rubber sanding block you can also use water instead of the expensive spray put a couple of squirts of dish soap in the water it acts like a lubricant . You can use a spray bottle for the water and sprits it on the panel Never use your hand or fingers to sand . I would also use some silver or white spray paint do a light guide coat and sand very lightly the silver mist on the panel will tell you when you have the run blocked out . Your panel will be more flat and uniform

    This technique works excellent I've personally used it many times. I use a soft flat sanding block with some 600 or 800 and just use a little soapy water and lightly block it focusing on the high spots. Turns out perfect every time!

    I went to school for 4 years doing collision repair, plus worked at an autobody shop. So I can vouch that what he's doing here is correct. My only suggestion is get a flexable sanding block, basically its a 2x4" foam pad that you put the sand paper on, I personally would attack the run with my finger first to apply the majority of the pressure on the high spot only, as it gets lower to the rest of the surface you should then switch to the sanding block and sand in an X pattern, constantly stopping to check the surface for low and high spots. This method can help reduce the risk of putting a low spot in using your fingers instead of a block.

  • @stacy532
    @stacy5328 жыл бұрын

    great tip another trick to use is glazing putty . you can smear glaze on the lower spots of the run even it out as best you can with the putty spreader then while you sand to remove the putty the run also vanishes at the same time as the glaze putty. it is also available everywhere the sand paper is. another smaller tip is when folks are block sanding automotive paint they use the method of guide coat. if your material is light color black works great . if your dip is dark colored a can of white aerosol dip would help you find the low and high spots as well . mist on a light coat of the different color let it dry and while you sand to remove the run or drip you will be less likely to cut too deep and hit the oem paint.. hope this helps

    Would a sanding block help keep everything flat? Or is having the flexibility in the sandpaper a good thing. Or does it just depend on the contours of the spot you're working on?

  • @pfchotrod

    I dipped my Vette this past weekend and had 4 sags in my base coat because I stopped my gun movement getting around the car. I stopped the shoot and found this video and followed his instructions. the hardest part was waiting for the 3 coast to set up enough to try the fix. I ended up waiting 2 hours and used his wet sand method, the only thing I did different was that I used a wet sanding hard back/ sponge on the flat surfaces rather then my finger as I didn't want to put a finger groove in the material by accident. once dry I continued on with my black base (3 more coats) and followed up with my carbon red infused top coats. Came out awesome, I had some minor imperfections during the un taping process but they are not noticeable and the best thing is I can peel it off in the future and try another color, if I had painted the car and gotten the mistakes I'd have to live with it or sand and repaint. great stuff!

    I had some massive runs in a dip job I did the other night - spills actually, the vent on top of my cup kept clogging so I just removed it and a couple times I sloshed dip onto the job. If you're doing, say, a temporary dip and you're not overly concerned with the end result, it can help to immediately take your gloved finger and just dab up the run as soon as it's there. Blot away as much of it as you can, you'll probably start to see oem paint even. Then just go over the spot again and it sorta levels. I imagine that if you did this first, applied enough layers over the top, and then did the wet sanding and recoating like shown in this video you'd get good results and you wouldn't do as much with the sandpaper.

    If you've masked with tape, how do you keep the Plasti Dip from peeling along with the tape? I'm not painting a car, I'm only painting some clear plastic wastebaskets, but I can't keep the Plasti Dip from peeling along the tape edge without going carefully along the edge of the tape with an X-acto blade. Obviously this is something one wouldn't do to a car.

    I found a technique to try while you are still spraying, if you take a paper towel and fold it over, right when you notice the run dab it gently trying to absorb the thick area of the run, if it's not too big and you catch it right away you might be able to recover with the next coats, I've only done this on wheels so far..

    Havent been able to get a straight answer from anyone about this. I have a car that was dipped about 8 months ago (matte black) the dip is still in great shape. However I want to dip the bottom portion of my car white and leave the roof + window trim and pillars the same matte black. I am wondering if I can just mask off the entire top and then just spray the bottom portion white over the black? Also will the masking tape stick or leave any residue on the old black dip?

    +dontevenliftbro Ive had bad experiences with masking off previously painted parts to try and add to them. If you are going to do that, make sure the surface which is being masked is THICKly dipped or it will peel with the mask. Also, you need to peel the mask QUICKLY after shooting the paint, or it will dry to the mask and peel that part aswell. If anything, i would start with some test material and try to replicate your car's dip thickness etc, mask off the test part and paint it white, then peel and see how you like it. Good luck! Also stay away from edges, the mask will peel edges almost guaranteed
