A really excellent job of recording sharp clear video closeups and the narration was no nonsense, to the point and not missing anything. I can afford a new coffee maker but it bugs me how much stuff can be fixed easily and given another kick at the can, as I say. So having watched this, it looks like my Oster (over 10 years old) has two thermal fuses in series from the temp sensor instead of one per lead to the element. Metered in circuit, one is open and one is conducting. Thank you.

Excellent video. I like that you explained the basics of using the multi-meter for viewers not familiar with them. One suggestion is to not pour water into the reservoir when the machine is hot. With no water in the reservoir the heater heats up very fast and when the cold water hits the hot heater it turns to steam and could possibly damage the heater.

This is exactly the mistake I made, poured a cup and added water ... instant burnt wire smell .. Glad I found this video ... just saved me $200.00. P.S. When you do go to do the repair, make sure you have dumped the water out of the reservoir before you flip it over, otherwise you will look like a wet idiot ... trust me I know.

underneath that is identical to a cheap mr. coffee brewer, nice video, easy fix

Ahhh! I figured this might be my problem. I glad I watched this video tutorial. I just got done fixing my crockpot express with the same issue. I had to order special split tip screw drivers to remove my cover just came in today for my coffee pot. Hopefully this is my problem, now I’ll need to order another thermal fuse probably not the same heat range as my express crockpot. It would be nice if it is…...

GREAT VIDEO!!! I hope the Hubby can watch it and FIX my 200$$$ ++ Burr grinder Cuisinart coffee maker. Only had it for 6 yrs!! LOVE it but 6 yrs SUCKS. Gotta drag out the Mr. Coffee that STILL works after 100 yrs and make it the old fashioned way--with burr ground coffee beans from the CUISINART!!! that's all that works on it and the stupid BEEPER Thanks for the great video .

Hello. I have pretty much the same Cuisinart coffee maker, with the same problem. And sure enough, the thermal fuses are open-circuit. BOTH of them. As the base area of the coffee maker over-heats, I would not expect both fuses to trip at _exactly_ the same time. One of them, with the lowest temperature trip point, would open up first. That should interrupt current to the heater, which should then stop heating, and I would think would prevent the second fuse from tripping. Of course, there is probably some "thermal inertia" in the system, so that heating of the second fuse continues for a short time after current to the heater is interrupted. Maybe long enough to trip/melt the second fuse? If I was keen enough, I guess I could do some experiments with some temperature probes... Anyway, I am fortunate to have a "parts picker" coffee make, with two intact thermal fuses of the same rating, so I will use those to repair my Cuisinart.

Both fuses had the same exact temp rating on this coffee pot. The issue definitely was the pot was left on empty with nothing in the carafe. You would think having a thermistor that it could use that to shut the heater down before it hit the temp rating of the fuses.

@@theguyofalltrades There is a thermistor (or similar temperature sensor). In your video, it is the small device with the two thin grey wires attached to it, which is clamped to the heater. That temp sensor is for the keep-warm function. After brewing is complete, the controller measures the temperature of the heater/plate/carafe, and if it cools below some threshold, the heater is turned on for a short time, until measured temperature goes above an upper threshold. For my machine, when in keep-warm mode with about 2 mugs of water in the carafe, the heater gets turned on for about 10-12 seconds, and then goes off for about 3 minutes, and the cycle repeats. The thermal fuses (also called thermal cut-offs) are basically fail-safe devices, which will protect the appliance (and your kitchen/office) from drastically over-heating or fire. That would happen if for some reason the normal control loop using the thermistor had failed for some reason, and just kept the heater on. Or maybe the relay that switches the heater has "stuck on". The system design _should_ be such that you can safely remove the carafe for any number of minutes, and the thermistor loop should still prevent over-heating. It should not be "normal" for the appliance to be "bricked" by a tripped thermal cut-off, just because you removed the carafe for a minute to pour coffee for your guests. By the way, the two thermal cut-offs may have the same 240C trip _spec_, but it's hard to imagine that they are so exactly similar to trip within a few milliseconds of each other. If one trips at 239.9C and the other trips at 240.1C, then the 239.9C part should go open-circuit first, while the 240.1C part is still conducting.

WOW!! THANK YOU! I have an old Cuisinart, with the built in grinder, and timer. My wife loves the smell of fresh ground coffee in the morning and the sound of the grinding beans wakes me up. It looked almost identical from the bottom. I tested and got almost identical reading for the heater element. One more problem I have is the 2 orange rubber tubes were rotted right through, (which explains the recent water appearing under the machine), so I cut the longer tube back & used it where the short tube was. All working except I'm not sure if there's a special type of tubing & if so, where would I get this? Thanks again for the excellent video!!

enjoyed the video. I have a defective switch on my coffee maker. it is also a 3 prong rocker switch. can you please tell me which wires to connect to bypass the switch. we will be operating the coffee maker off of a switched plug until I can get a new rocker switch. ty

I’m guessing, there’s a fuse for the brew and another one for the hot plate.

My Crux machine had 2 thermal fuses wired in series, both 15A and both 240C. One was blown and the other was fine. Couldn't find a 15A so I bought a 10A, should work as it is only a 1Kw pot.

8.3amps. Supposed to be 125% overrated which is 10.37. Should be good I think but it’s life be shortened due to being so close.

@@theguyofalltrades The ones you linked to are 10A and I didn't ever find any rated higher Amps than 10...not that it is your responsibility. I think the temperature rating is the most important spec on these.

That was helpful, thanks. My fuses are both blown. What's bothering me is that if the coffee maker is designed properly, the fuses should not blow unless something else has failed and it had "run away" (i.e. like the temp sensor, or a stuck relay, etc). If replacing the fuses fixes it, then were the original fuses underrated or defective? Or are the fuses going to immediately blow again, because the temp sensor is still bad? You get my point. That said, it's hard it resist the satisfaction of fixing something, so I guess I'll spend $10 and replace them and see what happens.

There is a temp sensor to regulate the temp but I think if you leave the carafe empty it will take out the fuses. You would think there would be a fail safe. I’m still searching for an official schematic to be sure but I haven’t had an issue since I replaced them.

@@theguyofalltrades ​ I got some fuses, crimped them in, and so far it's made 3 pots of (coffee-less) coffee. Looks good! Before buying, I looked up the specs for the failed fuses and they said they can have a reduced performance if they were improperly heat-sinked when they were welded in place. Maybe the cause of these failures is rooted in the manufacturing process. Thanks again for the video.

Thermal fuses, like just about all electronics, degrade with age, and more so when hot. So repeated heat cycles will gradually degrade the thermal fuse until it fails. I've replaced thermal fuses on coffee pots several times, and more recently, on a space heater. I found my 'spares' in the garage. My space heater thermal was 128 degrees C, and the one for my old Black and Decker coffee pot was 139 degrees C. I'm a bit surprised how high these fuses go since water has to boil but not a lot more. It isn't like you want your carafe to have a hot plate under it that is 'only' 200 degrees C -- it would boil at 100 degrees C! It would be useful if somebody could read actual markings on theirs.

Mr Coffee Model BVMC EHX23 - the thermostat is brand RU (backwards R) part number KSD 303 125v 12A 155 degrees centigrade.. Looks like not all the Mr Coffees use the same temp rating thermostat. And there are dozens of companies making those thermostats.

I'm looking to replace the fuses in my Mr. Coffee 4 cup machine and am having a hard time finding information on what the proper fuse to use is. I've seen some repairs that use the 216 degree fuse and some, such as this repair, that use the 240 degree fuse. The ones that are currently in the machine are unmarked. Is there a discernable difference between the two?? Should I just go with the the 240? Thanks for all the helpful information.

My 14 cup model has 216 degrees C fuses. Unfortunately, both my fuses are still 0.0 ohms (continuity setting 'beeps'). My hot plate is 14 ohms. My maker brews OK, but when the brew cycle is done, it just goes off, like it should do 2 hours later when it times out. Probably the circuit board then. I'm going to see if there's some way to reset it and try again.

Sounds like a logic issue with the board. Is there a thermistor too? That is what senses hot plate temp. I’d maybe check that

To add,take the the hoses off and clean out the tube. Get the scale off. The calcium etc build up in the tube restricting the flow blowing out the fuse sometimes other then a old fuse. Plus it makes your coffee taste better. :)

@@theguyofalltrades I received confirmation today from Conair who owns Cusinart that the element is food grade aluminum. Regardless hard pass on cusinart. All Aluminum is tied to Alzheimer’s.

What if everything you mention was done with the pot still doesn't heat up or start the water pumping into the pot? What else can I do?

Did you do a resistance check on the heating element? If that’s good I would verify power is getting to the heater. If not there’s probably a bad relay on the control board

I have a coffee machine with a k-cup button and a brew button. The brew button works and heats up, but the k-cup button, when pressed, beeps and than shuts off. What could cause that?

Beeps immediately? I know the k cup needles on those ten to get clogged. You can clean out with toothpick if that’s the case

The brew button brings hot water out of the same needle without issue, but for some reason the k-cup button shuts the machine off. It also makes a heating noise like it's trying to heat up the water *after* it shuts off.

Do the butt plugs have to be un-insulated or are insulated ok?

Why is everyone so mad at the manufacturer? This fuse saved your pot from melting or burning your house. My grandpa had a cheap single coffee cup heater that melted one day, wish he had these fuses in that thing... fail safe.
