    This is the best pack fitting video I've ever seen. For years I had this idea that there was one 'magic fit' that you were trying to achieve with the hip belt, shoulder straps, and load lifters, and once you found it you should NEVER change anything. It was the holy grail of pack fitting....the backpacking equivalent of Hulk Hogan's moustache, that could be glimpsed only at certain times, and soon faded from view, not to be seen for ages. Now I realize that pack fitting is something that you do throughout a day's walking. Love my Gregory packs, my 1999 Reality has been on archaeology projects starting in Greece in '99, UK, Sweden, Jamaica, Bermuda, Cyprus, throughout U.S., then Greece again in 2019! Two decades of hard use, being crammed full of smelly, often wet, gear, and still going strong. But now replaced by my new Zulu 40, heading to Greece as soon as we all get past this pandemic. Stay home, stay healthy, work on your gear! Gregory is the best.

    Sweet! I just bought the Gregory Stout 65 and had some problems adjusting it correctly. This video helped immensely. I feel like the torso adjustment is a bit weird tho. Using the guide on the website I should have a medium length (measures about 49 cm) but a small seems to fit me better with the strops. Am I just doing it wrong?

    @@GregoryPacks1977 Hi. I measure my torso length to be around 48-50 cm so it should be either a Medium or Large. I feel like the shoulder straps are digging a bit into my trapezius. I suspect that it is because the straps are "going in" too close to my shoulders. How should I adjust it?

    great vid! I have a men’s paragon 58 in sm/m, how does the adjustable torso length markings match up to the measurements I have taken for my torso? I tried both extremes and the middle and still don’t have a good feel for where to set it. Similar to Sang’s question, is there a place to measure on the pack to adjust to to my measured torso length? I have a long torso for my height at just over 19” and went with the smaller size due to a very small waist that has issues with a bigger hip belt. miss the more modular hip belt system of the previous generation

  • @GregoryPacks1977

    @GregoryPacks1977

    You should really be in a MD/LG, but then it sounds like the hip belts might not fit you properly. If you set the harness to the upper most adjustment, you should get close to a 19” torso length (18.5”). Our product team suggested that you set the length to it’s highest point, take a photo of you wearing the pack (with some weight) from a side view, and send to it to us at social@gregorypacks.com. We can get a better idea of how it’s fitting and make any further recommendations from there. Hope this helps!

    This is exactly what I needed to find out! My torso measures 18", so either a small or medium. I got medium to leave space for cold trips when I'm wearing more layers. Does anyone put iron/sew on patches on their packs? I figure it's the rain cover that makes them waterproof, so a few holes from sewing on a patch won't matter. Thanks!

    Hey Valerie! Happy you were able to use this video to help with your fitting. Just a note that, the pack size should be the same even with layers (we generally recommend that people size down rather than up) Depending on the pack you have you can usually adjust the backpanel between small and medium to best customize to your body! Happy Trails!

    I bought a Small Jade 53 for my daughter because she has an extremely short torso, though she is the same height as me - 5'6". My medium was too long on her (the straps stuck up off her shoulders as in the illustration in the video of Lauren wearing a pack too large for her). However, while the small fit great in the length of the pack itself, the shoulder straps were much too short (they did not wrap all the way around her shoulder and were too narrowly spaced together as well). What would you recommend?

    Great video! I'm trying to figure out if my current pack fits me well. Q1 You guys described how to measure my torso which I followed. But what do I do with that information? For example, do I then measure my current pack and see if it matches? From which points on my current pack do I measure between to match my torso? Q2 About the hip belt placement. The video says 1 inch above the hip. But what part of the hip belt is 1 inch above the hips? I'm guessing the bottom of the hip belt is 1 inch above my hips? Is that right?

    What if I am between sizes? I tried an XS/S in REI (they didn't have S/M) and my torso is 18" which is the max measurement of the XS/S. The shoulder straps were a little too close to the base of my neck and rubbed my skin there. I wonder if the bigger size S/M would be a better fit? But I worry that it might be too big? the S/M fits 16-20 which I fall right in the middle. I had to extend the padding of the hip belt a bit as well to feel more comfortable on my hip bone with the XS/S. Any advice is welcome!

    Technically, the top of the hipbelt should sit 1” above your iliac crest (hip bone), so a bit above the top. This is assuming the bag has a full belt like a large-liter backpacking pack. The fit may vary with smaller daypacks. Hope this helps! For more info click here: www.gregorypacks.com/fit-and-sizing.html

    Hey there! We are sorry to hear that this statement has offended you. The same way clothing is designed to best accommodate many different body shapes (wide vs narrow hips, broad vs narrow shoulders) we try to do the same with our packs so that we can best tailor a product that can accommodate these differences. Of course we definitely encourage anyone to purchase whichever pack fits their body best, we design "gender specific" packs to best cater to these differing shapes.
