    Hi Dave, I've been watching your videos for a while now and have learned a few tricks (stuck seatpost) along the way. However I must say a few things on this one, as if your viewers would do this service repair like in this video, they may have a major problem: - the most important thing (as from Bosch written in the instruction manual): DO NOT grease the flat surface of the freewheel gear like at 14:10 , where it contacts the large needle roller clutch bearing. If the surface is contaminated, wipe it clean with isopropanol and slide the gear in the new freewheel like at 13:20 - the clutch bearing inside is already greased with the correct type of clutch grease. If you use the white Bosch grease on it, it will most probably slip and not be able to lock under high load. - clean throulithy between the teeth of the gear - use like a toothbrush a get all the rust/greece mix out of there, before applying the new white grease - change the o-ring on the shaft after cleaning it with a rag - there a few other things to consider, which are described in the Bosch instructions... * I would not use the "sponge" like inserts on the outside of the motor, they soak up water to and are magnet for dust - instead get a proper sealing from my colleague eBike Motor Center UK Best wishes and greetings from Austria! e-Bike Motorreparatur

    The retailer I bought my Bosch powered ebike from also fitted a tuning dongle for me while promising that it would not affect any Bosch warranty claims as long as they are made through them. Presumably they will remove the dongle before carrying out any motor service, software upgrade or diagnostics - but evidently it is their choice to honour the warranty. Before anyone says that a tuning dongle shortens the life of the motor, this is disputed by a reputable motor repairer in the south of England who states that in several years of servicing Bosch motors they have seen no specific wear attributable to a motor that has been derestricted. Water ingress is the main cause of wear, and this could be reduced by the manufacturer using better seals, but this would reduce the range by a few kilometres which would allow competitors using less tight seals to claim a range advantage! How you choose to ride your bike is your responsibility. I enjoy the elimination of the cut-off without feeling compelled to always take advantage of the possibility of riding at a higher speed. I ride according to the prevailing conditions with or without a motor - restricted or not. I always ride with reasonable respect for the safety of others and myself. The only times I ride at real speed (over 25mph) are when the motor is not contributing because gravity has taken over. Perhaps gravity should be restricted?

  • @TheYorkshireBikeMechanic

    @TheYorkshireBikeMechanic

    4 ай бұрын

    Hi, Thanks for watching, attaching a tuning device will void your warranty, no matter who fits it. The reputable motor repairer is correct, it's unlikely that the motor will wear quicker, providing that it's ridden responsibly, however the chain, cassette and front ring will have a shorter life together with hubs and such like will also need additional servicing.

  • @beanysteve5832

    @beanysteve5832

    Hi Dave, I've been thinking about what you said regarding wear of the drivetrain. The vast majority of effortful riding takes place below the cutoff limit, and so additional wear on a derestricted bike will be marginal compared to a restricted one. Of course, without empirical data we can only make an educated guess (coloured by any respective bias we might have ;) ) I'd hate to encourage others to use me as an example as I tend to aim towards maximising range over speed, but my experience certainly leads me to believe that the most wear must occur when the most power is being applied through the drivetrain. And that's when grinding up those steep hills on higher levels of assist, or accelerating from a standing start, standing up on the pedals - and I'm never going over the cutoff limit then! I am going to update my gears though, in the hope that going from 9 to 12 speed with a bigger cog on the front will give me a higher top speed before spinning out, and better climbing up the steepest hills on moderate power settings. But for the reasons of longevity and reliability that you've described, I won't be going for the more expensive refined options, instead sticking to a humble combination of Deore components. Without the motor, and without it being derestricted, I'm pretty sure I'd never have got back into cycling after a 30 year break! Being able to regulate the motor contribution at all speeds and according to my physical need is important to me as I had a heart attack a while back, and the ebike (and giving up smoking) has allowed me to gradually become fitter than I have been since I used to surf everyday. I'd say it's been a lifesaver, in fact. @@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
