A good thing to mention is.... Throw a bucket of seawater onto your deck just before you bring your fish on board.... It stops the blood sticking to the deck. Good for either Teak or plastic. p.s... You can bake the head with onions too.(beautiful) Loads of meat on it. Cheers for the video.

By severing the spinal chord just behind the gills, you're only keeping it from flopping around, right? Wouldn't it still be alive while starting to bleed it? Wouldn't it be better (more humane) to kill it quick with a knife to the brain itself first? We do exactly that when spearing if we don't get a perfect kill. Serious question, not a criticism.

  • @PheelTheJoy
    @PheelTheJoy2 жыл бұрын

A great way to bleed the fish without getting it all aboard your deck is to tail rope the fish and tie him to a cleat and pull him for a little ways (after you've made a cut in the gills and at the tail).

Much of what I wanted to say has already been said. But the most disturbing thing for me about this video is throwing so much good meat back into the sea! Especially as a liveaboard cruiser, you should be using every last piece from the fish before you hook another one (only take what you can eat). And that includes the head, which is regarded in many cultures as the most nutritious part of the animal. This is what to do with a fish this size when on passage: 1. Make cevice with lemon/lime juice 2. Pickle/cure/dry fillets 3. Grill/Barbecue fillets 4. Take the bones and anything else and boil to form fish stock 5. Make a chowder/soup/stew using the fish stock Fair winds!

I can understand the frustration of seeing good food being wasted but at the same time, the ocean isn't your coastal fishing grounds or deer hunting grounds, don't get me wrong I'm not calling you landlubbers, it's just that whether the fish stays on the surface or goes deep down it'll feed another happy fish, or help microorganisms. Everything you throw into compost on land can be thrown in the sea..

Wow, sure left out lots of opportunity for advice. How about: 1. Use a minimum of 100lb test offshore. 150-200 if using a handline (handlines on doubled-up surgical tubing - 6 ft works far better than the biggest Penn real/Rod combo) Why? Because it allows the rig to fight the fish. Once tired you simply hand over hand the line in. Tie a small bell to the surgical tubing to let you know dinner is on. 2. Use very large treble or double hooks and sharpen each point even if they are brand new 3. As noted below, use cheap Gin or Vodka in the gills to dispatch the catch 4. Gaff into the gills 5. Let the catch fully tire before gaffing 6. Fully bleed the catch (especially Tuna) before filleting by tieing off the tail and hanging over the side. Even the smallest catch will bleed profusely and make a bloody mess. With my rod/reel combo I usually hear...zzzzzzzzz....zzzzzzzz.......zzzzzzzzz.....streeeeetch....snnnnnnap - lost catch With my handline hear ring, ring, ring....then dinner Cheers and happy fishing

I fish off my small yacht on the east coast UK too but with worms at anchor as the water is too murky for lure fishing. I used to have fishing boats before buying a sailboat but wanted a cruising boat. Yachts make good fishing boats too as they are stable at anchor.

+Iandi Boats Exactly my thought on seeing this. The dorado's flesh goes up above it's head. I would also go down from the head rather than up from the tail when filleting, running the knife with the angle of bone rather than against it. That blade could have been sharper, too.

I get the novice quick and easy approach. I can even see how what you tossed overboard becoming food for other fish and possibly bottom dwellers... I would call this a "How to" on a small boat in rough seas. I have seen this technique become common practice now though. Next time you hit port invest some time at a fish market and see if they will up your game. Otherwise, your effort and vids are appreciated...

When catching fish at sea . pour any alcohol on the gills . Just a cap full . The fish will OD and no struggle . I don't use a rod but use the bungee chord and bell method . After filleting , dry the rest with salt to make fish jerky or in the oven . Good video and thanks for sharing .

We ate lot of fish but we also wasted too much. If the guy was like us and couldn't keep the meat from fresh then I'm ok with discarding the Dorado as he did.

Yes, you can make a stew in a pot by simmering the head and backbone and flaking off the remaining meat. Chop up some vegetables, throw them in with rice and a great meal can be had. You guys are too hard on this guy though. Many people with long range cruising boats don't even have rod holders on the stern or fishing gear in the boat and then complain about lack of variety of food onboard. This guy is trying to help THEM with some basic fishing tips.

You did a few very smart things. First, by bleeding in the bucket, instead of overboard, you don't end up with a sea lion or shark taking it from you (happens all the time). Second, spiking the fish is smart and humane, I really liked that. The only thing I would suggest is that when you bring a fresh fish on deck, kick that reel into freespool.

I grew up on a cruising sailboat. Not catching anything is the exception. Grilling is easy when you're at anchor. While underway and things are rockin' and rollin', I found that pan frying medallions rolled in egg then rolled in corn meal is the easiest, cleanest way to cook up dinner. Anything you can cook in a single pot or pan is the way to go while the waves are rolling.

Glad that the comments are mostly rightfully only complaining about the waste of fish here, rather than the act of killing it. Regardless, no part of the fish was really wasted. The carcass was eaten in full by either birds, mammals, or shark and returned to the ecosystem. Killer Whales will literally kill an entire Humpback Whale and only eat the animal's tongue, leaving the entire whale to scavengers. Being picky is what apex predators do.

+Daniel Selby You've been doing what your whole life? What waters? What species of fish? What sort of reel/set up? And YES, it all matters. You're not nearly as smart as you think you are.

It's not that bad, the guy has done some fishing before. The fillet job wasn't the best. He does have the gaffe theory correct, but needs some practice, and I do like that he opts for the rod and reel instead of a hand line.

Fly on the Rod T.V. What are you talking about??? You always gaff over the fish and pull back. Never do you scoop the fish like you do with a net. You miss far more with that technique and also hit belly which is easier to rip.

Let's see you do it on a rolling deck and then post the results. It's not like chopping something up at a cleaning station at the pier.

the fish aren't going anywhere so I wouldn't be fishing if those conditions. fish head soup is amazing and you can also boil the bones to make a fish stock. put that stuff in the freezer for a meal later one. people are just greedy and wasteful.

Nice fish. Shame this guy really doesn't have a clue. So many incorrect ideas, it's hard to know where to start. How far back did he put the lure??? It matters, based on boat speed, wake etc. Never gaff a fish "underneath", because if you miss, could easily dislodge the hook. Never gaff it on the shoulder, or anywhere in the eating part. Always under the chin, or throat. This is gaff 101. If you are going to filet a fish on youtube, maybe learn how to do it first. Go to a fish market or store, or a fishing boat and ask them to show you. It takes a fair while to learn how to do this properly, and a very long time to do it fast and neat, without leaving half the fish on the bone. If you are going to kill an animal to eat, make it worthwhile.
