I recently went halibut fishing in Alaska on the Alaskan gulf. It was my first time fishing and I had a blast catching most of them within my group.

Haleeboot angling is so fun. I like the same rig you got; the "Canadian" reel with a steelhead medium heavy 8'6" rod. I use basic inexpensive 40 lb. monofilament with a diamond jig smeared with smellyjelly and a squid skirt. I like 25-40lb. Haleeboot. I love cod and rockfish too. I'm subscribed.

You can take a small size paint roller load it with scent like pro cure and then slip the squid shirts over the roller. Halibut have an excellent sense of smell and it may take drawing them in from quire a distance. The more Scent you have the better. Fresh salmon bellies particularly the oiler salmon makes awesome halibut bait as well. Not the brightest fish, and when they want to eat there amazingly aggressive.

Why that lingcod was in the halibuts mouth is because the ling bit on your bait first and that halibut attacked the ling and subsequently hooked himself. its called piggybacking and its common on catching lingcod but i have never heard of a halibut piggybacking in. I am sure its because of your large hook size that fish was landed.

FYI, Pacific halibut do not change sexes as you stated. In fact, most male halibut sexually mature at age 8 while females don't mature until age 12. Females, however, live longer than males. The largest Pacific halibut weighed just 55 pounds. Therefore, if you catch a halibut over 60 pounds, it is a female. Hope that helps clear things up. John, from www.halibut.net

You should never let a halibut "play" in the surface. It can only swim one way, down or up. When it´s coming up you want to hook it as soon as possible so it don´t get the chance to swim down. If it´s big enough (wich these are not) the line will brake and the poor halibut will have the hook stuck in it´s mouth....

There are a number of species even in freshwater that are Hermaphrodites. Tench and Carp, for example. It was thought at the time when Chris Yeats caught the British record carp of 50+ lbs that it had be an hermaphrodite due to many of the Redmire syndicate members, believing the fish to have been a male. It is thought that environmental conditions could trigger this happening like over fishing to give one form of change, where when a species like fish are under pressure they can change sex to redress the sex imbalance. I not so sure like some other comments on here, as to whether there is an exact size when this sex change happens.
