How To Find Your Evening Gown | Strategies for Choosing "The One"

If there's one phase of competition that truly embodies the heart and soul of pageantry, it's the evening gown competition. What you choose, how it fits you, and how you style your look will speak volumes about you to the judges.
Finding an evening gown can be a whole thang so if you're new to this, don't be intimidated. Start with developing your sense of taste and observing what you like and don't like from the designers mentioned in this video. (Most of the time, the designer does matter.) Reflect on your own body shape and figure out what you'd like to show off. From there, make decisions such as color, fabric, and budget for alterations because it is imperative that your gown fit you as perfectly as possible. Unless you really know what you're doing, don't go "too trendy" right out the gate.
Please leave a comment with what other videos you'd like to see, my loves!

    Love your videos!! I was wondering your opinion about teen candidates (MAOTeen) having slits in their evening gowns-- I happen to have a ball gown with a slit and I'm trying to decide whether to sew it up or not. (For reference it's not a HIGH slit, it hits just above the knee) Again, love your videos

  • @CrystalClues

    @CrystalClues

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Emma! Regarding slits, the answer is actually “it depends”; I find that if you are an older teen and on the taller, willowy side, it’s a lot easier to get away with a slit. I am one of the more progressive judges though so as long as the slit is tasteful and the posing is done conservatively (none of that long leg sticking out Angelina Jolie stuff) I am actually not against it and I wouldn’t knock points off for it. I wouldn’t necessarily it put it on a 14 year old unless she looked older, though.

    I remember the times when I had black hair and many times I was wearing black clothes, black dresses and high heels and some people said that I am usually all black, expect colour skin, I also loved gold, I still love but I realized that I want to change my style a bit, now I have pink long hair and I wear more colorful and sweet clothes but I love black and gold still.

    You don’t need to spend $4,000 on your gown if it’s for a local or state pageant, in the MAO system.

    No disrespect. I love your content, but $4,000 to $6,000 for a gown? Maybe for Miss America or Miss USA but definitely not for a local/state competition? Personally, I've never spent more than $700 at a state or local pageant and I've won a state evening gown preliminary award. This especially doesn't make sense for a scholarship competition.

  • @CrystalClues

    @CrystalClues

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tamara! Thanks for weighing in - you’re totally right - I was really talking about state and national level gowns. But in most pageant systems, having a budget for a gown is starting to be a real expectation. (A lot of the viewers watching here are competing in other systems where the scholarship components are often “marketing” elements more than genuine scholarship competitions that look at the scholastic achievement alone. They are entering a pageant for more than just the money. Any contestant that seeks only the scholarship would just apply for another type of scholarship contest that may be exclusively grades, letter of re , and paperwork-based, for instance.) I would say I didn’t emphasize enough that it expensive-looking correlates with higher placements at the more competitive level for state and beyond. But exceptions also apply - there have definitely been contestants who have won in 100 gowns and others who have won in 10,000 gowns. In the MAO program, an outstanding contestant at the local level who wears a paper bag could probably win because the dress is easily “fixable” by the committee. But in a lot of other systems, you will simply be drowned out by a sea of fabulous gowns worn by daughters with wealthy parents who fund their children’s’ hobbies. If you want to be generally competitive in the evening gown category across multiple systems, I felt comfortable benchmarking the gowns at $4-5k MSRP brand new. That’s just what the industry asks for. (And one of the reasons pageants pushes so many people away at first glance.) But what you pay for the gown isn’t always what it’s worth, if that makes sense. A $5k gown purchased for $1k can still look like a 5k gown. Fabric, material, fit, and brand all factor in to this. A lot of the miss america contestants who competed at the state level ended up getting those expensive gowns at a discount either second hand, borrowing, etc. I personally had a pageant executive director who had a rotating closet full of gowns that were rented out and lented out to contestants across the state for many years. It wasn’t until I got to Miss America that I realized how lucky I was and how rare that was. At the end of the day anyone watching this video or any of my advice is going to have to take what they agree with and ignore what they think isn’t helpful for them and their journey. They should be watching other videos and making the best decisions for themselves and I expect nobody to take every word I say as the law - it’s just my .02 from my experience.
