Danny, I'm NOT a "follower" and never will be. Gurus never found me sitting at their feet but... YOU, sir, have a personal manner and a powerful message that moves me. THANK YOU for these videos, Danny. I'll make a tiny exception to my not following gurus policy... you can be my ART guru! .. lol... You inspire me to follow your example and your words of wisdom, sir.

It’s funny to me that you say that, as I watched the video, I was thinking to myself that Danny is like the pastor of my art church…kinda wanna call him Pastor Danny, but he also has such a wonderful calming and grounding demeanor that is quite father like, in all the very best ways a dad or grandpa can be. It’s just such a joy to receive his insights and encouraging words . Worth following 😊

Two of the many things I enjoy in your videos is no ads cutting through the flow of your speech, and, I can hear you instead of needing to sift through loads of distracting background music. I love what you're saying here. I've actually sold stuff that I only did for my own pleasure and the buyers fell in love with it.

Hi Danny, you will probably never see this comment but I wanted to let you know as many others have, how much your words resonate with me. You got right to the heart here, I spent the first half of your video in tears, actually most of it. Sometimes it’s hard to keep sharing our own passions and creativity when they meet with the ‘wrong audience’ as it were, this then leads to slow erosion of confidence and the general feeling of invisibility (which I think is exacerbated by my specific time of life). You are so right, we create for ourselves and that brings a feeling of magic. Thank you for your wise words.

My personal art is precious to me and thus I do it for myself. I share it on Instagram and on here, yes, and via a blog, but I only share it because it doesn't feel right squirreling it away. Someone out there is going to resonate with it, and if they find it, great. I've stopped listening to those people who "should" all over me... because their "should" suggestions are based on THEIR preferences and those preferences rarely ever resonate with me, no matter how well-intentioned. I love my art because I don't pressure it to impress others. I have a full-time job where I spend hours doing designs that someone else wants. That's fine... that's their time, they're paying for it. But for my own art. That's MINE. PS - Fellow Sketchbook Artist here. I love them so much I even started an event on Instagram three years ago... every September is World Sketchbook Month. :)

Google found you for me today of all days - the day I decided to video journal my attempts to re-teach myself to write/create, now that I have a debilitating chronic illness. I felt cringey about putting it online, but I know I’m not the only person learning to live with a new disability. Perhaps I will find people like me, returning to creativity as rehab so we can then do more of what we love in future. Thank you for your awesome video 🤩

I have the opposite problem. People call me an artist. They ask if I’m making art. Whereas I tend to deny my being an artist. I recently gave in, started painting and drawing in a sketchbook on a regular basis. I started an instagram account where I post art from pages. Now I get 👍 and ❤ and comments. People seem to like my art. I’m having fun making people happy by creating my art. The downside is I’m not getting promoted at work, but I am having fun, consoling myself, through creative time. Can’t have it all I guess ❤

Sigh!!!…. Do what you do, Wow! The weight of a life lived thus far to serve others is crushing at times. You forget about what you love, it all gets confused and tangled and you have to go so far back that you can’t even find the beginning. It’s lost, obscured by the business of just doing life. So I’m that girl and I’ve started trying to find where my great love is. I am painting and sketching for me, totally from within myself and it’s so intimidating, yet I am not giving up. I will get there. And it’s thanks to fabulous talks like this one and the support of a loving partner, (who doesn’t say negative things.) Thank you so for this great conversation.

Now this is a message! Danny, you are so genuine, and have a real gift for reminding us that we can also learn to express who we really are (I can say the same for ALL your art teachers). I have been a sketchbook School member since the early days. Honestly the first thing that called to me was not just the topic of art but the simple humanity of a guy who had been through some stuff using art to connect with and express life. Keep doing your thing!

thanks for your honest, wise words. Those voices can get so loud and overwhelming that I freeze and then have so much repressed anger from trying to push them down. Then I lose the sense of wanting to create because it gets so difficult. Learning to let go and make it fun is the best way out of that scenario...thanks for reminding me who I'm creating for and asking myself what I want to do just for fun.

Yes, I think that's the clue, do things because you love to do them. Thank you! I have recently found you in KZread and I have done some art experimenting with colored pencils and some Toulouse Lautrec mini printings. I had fun on Sunday morning just playing with colors and drawing which is something kind of different from what I've been doing...I usually draw from observation and then color up with colored pencils. But, to be creative, you need to play, to experiment. So, I wanted to thank you for your videos.

I've been keeping to myself, not sharing what I draw or write with a public audience, so my creative journey often feels lonely, with self doubts and worries lingering in the background. Your words are something I've wanted to hear for a long time. To have my fears and insecurities brought to light and so wonderfully articulated, then being told I have permission to do what I want? Is that even allowed? Your videos have been playing on repeat in the background while I draw and satisfy my creative needs. Thank you for all the good you do.

Language matters; in my mind anyways. I don’t call doing art work, but play. Then the issue to grapple in your mind is believing, then knowing, there are positive net benefits of play. Play actually enhances and improved your “work” areas of life (chores, employment, adulting). Play is necessary.

I have written some decent horror stories. Snapped many professional looking beautiful photos. Sketched a few beautiful subjects. Composed songs on my acoustic guitar. I make pretty good t-shirt designs as well. I'm not that bad at water painting too. The only thing that I can't make a decision about is...I don't know which one to pick and master in. I'm already 33 and feeling lost like never before. My day job doesn't pay well and all I can think about is doing something creative to satisfy myself and earn at the same time. I feel like time's running out for me :(

Thank you for this reminder. I have long gotten lots of "shoulds" from well-intention family, friends, and co-workers about my art. I got so tired of it that I set it aside for 15 years. While largely supportive of my art making, my family has always been focused on how I should be applying my talents and skills to make money through my art rather than what I was trying to say with it or what it said about my inner world or experiences. I've been back at it again since discovering SBS some four years ago on KZread. I'm content to just keep a sketchbook and share my work online with other artist and even try to encourage others to give it a try. But once again, I've got people giving me helpful suggestions. One family member even told me I needed to stop focusing on my "stupid" sketchbooks and start making work to sell! This was right before she suggested that I go to a neighborhood Halloween stroll to sketch the decorated houses, which would certainly be a money maker. Heavy sigh!

i was once sketching and was seen, and the person who saw me asked me What are you drawing? So I considered that I was a woman, and he was a man, and the fact that I was backpacking in the mountains, and having considered these things, decided to answer simply "Kittens". He laughed. You learn a lot about people when you're backpacking for 9 days. It was a ridiculous answer given the view
