How to Find Top Dead Center - Back to Classics
Another video in our tutorial series. We often hear of people struggling to accurately find the top dead center (TDC) position of the piston to determine engine timing or adjust the ignition system. In this video we show you a very simple and accurate method to do that.
We also have the tools available to find TDC on your Ducati bevel drive engine:

We hope this video gives you a good idea about how to approach this job. Let us know if we can help you any further of course. Thanks for watching this episode and see you soon at Back to Classics!

Most likely the best explanation I have seen on youtube, very nicely done. Takes what is thought to be fearful black magic to an understandable process. Next would be a demonstration of shimming a bevel cam drive gear set using engineers blue for a replacement set and the factory grind marks for an original set. Very well done and appreciated.

When doing this to time the engine this should be done on COMPRESSION STROKE!!

True. These Ducatis use an ignition system with a lost spark at the exhaust stroke. So for ignition timing in this instance it doesn't really matter. Igntion systems that fire at compression stroke only should be set accordingly.

You can make your own tools. Drill and tap an old spark plug base after breaking off the ceramic section and thread in a bolt with the threads sticking out the top, add a lock nut, then adapt any degree wheel that is a good size for the application. Use a pencil mark or make a fancy pointer, your choice.

I made mine from an old spark plug too but added a breather to make it easier to use

@@bsimpson6204 Good idea, I hadn't thought of doing that, I just wait for the compression to leak off. Did you drill a small bleed hole or do something else?
