Great video as usual, would love to hear your opinion on flat feet (my case). I find that finding the style is SUPER challenging. A pointy shoe can look flattering or just awful depending on the style on top. If you can make a video detailing how to spot and look for ones that might work, it would be great!

Having very wide feet, shoe shopping is a nightmare. All of the high street and even high end shoes carry shoes that are crazy narrow. I am surprised you find your sneakers to be too wide, your feet must be dainty. I wonder why the shoe market is not more flexible in producing comfy shoes in different sizes and shapes. Clothes are much more forgiving and made in a gazillion sizes. This is the first time I have heard of Shoes of Prey! Grateful, thanks!!

I have wide feet, about 10 cm, maybe a bit over. I've found new look wide fit shoes quite good. Not high end, but worth the price definitely. If I don't find what I'm looking for there, that means a looong day searching through the stores 😕

Mihaela Škrabo So the New Look shoes are worth buying? I‘ve been eyeing them, but since I‘m looking for shoes I can wear to business meetings and such, I wasn’t sure if the quality was sufficient. I would much rather spend more money on a pair of higher end pumps, but I just can’t find any that fit. It’s crazy isn’t it? But if the New Look are at least genuinely ‚wide fit‘ I might give them a try. I bought a pair of Clarks ‚wide fit‘ recently and was very much disappointed. Sole to sole exactly the same width than other higher end pumps I own.

I have narrow feet and I always feel like shoes come too wide. I think the problem might be the ratio between height and width. When you go a number up, they don't just make the shoe longer but also wider. And that doesn't work for me because I don't need the shoe to be any wider. I just need it to be longer. For you, must be the opposite. If the shoe has the right lenght, then it's too narrow. Have you got short feet in comparison with how wide they are?

Haghenveien Yes, exactly. Shoe size is determined by length and it’s the same with (pretty much) with every manufacturer. I‘m a size 39 in length (24.9cm, if I remember correctly), but size 39 shoes pinch my toes horribly, size 40 is perfect in the front, but way too wide overall. It’s not just the length, my feet are also quite narrow and high-arched in the middle and very narrow around the heel. I basically can’t wear pumps or ballerinas at all, they either hurt like hell or my heels slip right out while walking even with glued in support thingies. I always look for shoes that are either open in the front (in a 39 for summer) or go at least up to the ankle (in a 40 for winter).

Rara Avis with the new look ones, you get what you pay for. They are better quality than most with that price tag, but not super comfy like high end ones. Last at least a season, but I have had pairs of their shoes that lasted years. They do fit my feet, which are eu size 40 and around 10 cm wide.

This was sooo great Justine! I wish I saw this video when I was younger. I have narrow Egyptian feet and I never, literally never found a pair of shoes I didn't basically swim in, so I always got smaller sizes, because they made my feet feel more secure, but over time I developped the hallux valgus; so now pretty much every type of shoe hurts me bad, unless it's got a really round toe. My point is: feet are so important, as they support your entire body and people don't really know about it. Thank you really for this video, it was much needed.

Super informative!!! Thank you so much, Justine! With a narrow heel and wide forefoot, Egyptian feet, i can say that i have struggled to find dress shoes that dont give me blisters! Also, i worked in a shoe store for a while and learned that with running shoes, you should always have a minimum of a thumbs’ width at the end of the big toe (measure by someone else with you standing upright so all your weight is displaced in the shoe). Best fit ever :)

I've never been a fan of wedges in the past, but I've been turning to platform wedges increasingly. They give me the height I want [5'1" weight 130]. They make my legs look a mile long. They are amazingly comfortable. Add an insole because I almost always need one and the comfort level goes up even more. I'm a happy camper. And YES! I'm a shoeholic!

I love wedges too, with a bit of platform to cushion. So desperate they aren't very on trend right now. I both dislike the chunky heel and it doesn't feel as good at all.

This is such important and detailed information. Thank you so much for this video. I have had a sour relationship with footwear since I was a kid - always wore incorrect shapes for my foot type, ill fitting shoes, wrong sizes, you name it. I eventually ended wearing only flats all the time and that caused issues with getting the balance right. I now have a slip disc and the info on custimised insoles is eye opening, I had no idea something like this was possible. This information is extremely helpful.

I have health issues that also cause memory issues and your videos have reminded me of things that I used to have at the forefront of my knowledge. I especially loved this video because my husband has one of the forms of muscular dystrophy and I will be looking into the company that makes shoes for your dimensions. He needs to have arch supports and leg braces made but even so he has extreme issues with width,arch and hammer toes. You are truly appreciated. The instep, the shape of the top of the foot, is important as well. I have a high instep, most 'formed' shoes are too narrow top to bottom for my foot to fit (even some work boots) and anything that laces up will require a longer set of laces so I can tie them. It's like trying to find a needle in a hay stack when I go shopping for shoes. Fashonable isn't even a consideration, I end up settling for the least hideous pair of athletic shoes I can find. Yes I know heels tend to be open across the top, however that accentuates the high insep making my foot look really large (my foot is a bit wide as well)

Candied Ginger my insteps are the same way. I usually end up taking out the sole padding to make more room or cutting slices with a razor blade in the inner seam of the instep (like on Sperry's) because of how badly they dig in.

Oh my gosh me too! I have the same problem. With high insteps, a view of my feet from the side looks like I am wearing heels even though I’m not. The higher the heels are, the harder it is for me to balance in those shoes. :(

I use booties that have a partial cut out on the instep or use a soft enough contrasting material (less pressure on instep and decreases visual surface area). Clark's is my go to shoe brand for this reason and that fact that almost all of their shoes use rubber on the bottom instead of the hard plastic that transfers all of the kinetic energy to my heel spurs.

Asma 10shoot Same. All my life. Plus, I have narrow feet and shorter toes, so sandals are always an issue because usually my feet are sliding out. Then I have to take brand new sandals to the cobbler to fix them and my little toe suffers.

Me to. The Trick for me was to buy them a Size bigger when they have an extra strip to support the small one so it cannot fall out and a rather long tablue to stand on. But mostly I prefer closed on the sides or wide flats in summer because of that.

This was so interesting, thank you Justine! I need to invest in customized insoles for sure - ballerina flats are my favourite shoes to wear but I find that by the end of the day my feet are actually hurting more than when I wear boots or shoes with a small heel.

I got excited when you mentioned making custom shoes through Shoes of Prey, but discovered that they are no longer in production. I can't tell if they're taking a (long) break or if they went out of business entirely. Anyways, I love your videos and have learned so much from you! I don't watch any KZreadr's videos as religiously as yours! There's something about the way you present the information and your calm and kind nature that really draws me in!

In the US, it gets worse. They use one set of numbering for toddlers, one set of numbering for small children, one set of numbering for older children (which are thankfully in sequence with the previous series, not true of the others), one set of numbering for adult women, one set of numbering for men, and then the one mentioned in the video, for sneakers. I am a European size 35. That translates to size 3 in "big kids" (officially 3.5, but by experience, I know it's 3), and size 5 in women. My size does not exist for men, but if it did, I would be a size 3.5. One has to carefully watch for sizing, especially between women and "big kids", as there is overlap. A size 5 in big kids corresponds to a European size 37, not at all the same as a size 5 in women. Has your head exploded yet? Thanks for reading this far. I like the Japanese and Korean systems. They are actually very logical. In Japan, your shoe size is the length of your foot in cm, rounded upward in half cm steps. In Korea, they use millimeters.

I wear a Euro 37-37.5, and so I often wear either a 4.5-5 in "big kids' (if they sell it lol) or anywhere from 6-7 in women's. It's nice to buy the kids shoes, but still, why can't we just have one size?! I like to rock climb too, which mainly goes by Euro sizes.

I wear a US 4 in Women's (just try and find THAT!) which equals a 2 in Big Kids. My Hunters (boots) are a bit big since the next size down is too small and they don't have 1/2 sizes; but since I wear heavy winter wooly socks with them, it's ok. Hunters are a Big Kids UK 2 which is an EU 34.

your videos are unique, always a pleasure to watch something different. i always had problems with my feet, so i have to buy expensive shoes made from mild leather, searching for any possible discounts, saving to buy once or twice a year. but the most people i know cant afford buying expensive shoes. so i've seen many deformed feet around me.

Such a good video Justine! Not many people know about it and you touched the points that create really big problems if the shoes are not right. Also, I find it annoying that some brands these days are doing everything to save money without giving consumers what is really needed, when it is important for people's health, as you mentioned here. Hazel Meldrum I used to sell lady's shoes. Several of my older clients had terrible feet. It makes me think twice about always having to wear the cute shoes.

Wonderful video! I don't like heels, so I like wearing flats, but I keep getting pain in the inner arch/heel line and on the soles. Now I understand why. I have eqyptian, mid-high arch and definitely need more arch support to prevent that pain. I'm glad I watched this video today before going shoe shopping, including your shoe quality video. Hi Justine, I enjoy your videos... and I love shoes :) I've lived half of my life in US and half in Europe, and I find that every brand has a different size conversion chart. In my experience, most of the size conversions I've used in the past 43 years do not match the chart you provide. So, you're right that trying on is always best, but when shopping online, instead of using a "universal" size chart, I find it more helpful to use a conversion chart that each brand provides, and the most reliable strategy has been measuring the length and width of my foot in both cm and inches and checking those shoe measurements. Also, my US sneaker size has always been exactly the same as my US shoe size. Thanks for the video, keep going!

Freefalling into grace the same here. My sneaker and shoe size has always been an 8 for both.

This was a cool video! Working in a shoe shop I allways told people to size up in nike and adidas because they were often a bit small, but I had no idea that they might have used a different scale. Certain brands also have different shapes, new balance for example are wider than a lot of other shoes. Interesting topic :)
