Music: "There Will Be Peace In The Valley"
Written and performed by Jason Avers
It's a hymn .. feel free to use it in church .. or anywhere.
The whole thing belongs to the creator, anyway.
Using a hand sickle to cut our grass allows me to take the time to learn about what I'm cutting .. and decide what I WANT to cut, and what I want to let go to seed. Some plants are more helpful to us in one context than another .. but they are ALL good for something. Today we will learn about three different wild lettuce plants that we may find in our gardens .. and what each of them are good for!

2:53 Mindful Gardening Brings Focus and Clarity
3:27 Lamium Amplexicaule aka 'henbit' or henbit deadnettle
4:16 Lamium Purpureum aka Purple or Red Deadnettle
4:29 Robinia Pseudoacacia aka Black Locust - or "Where all the Bees are today"
5:11 Wild Geranium .. a ground cover requiring some context
6:05 Lactuca Canadensis or North American Wild Lettuce .. the one that tastes kind of OK
8:21 Lactuca Serriola or Prickly Lettuce .. the reason Europeans are hated worldwide

Nice cat porch! I look forward to creating one of those as soon as I own my own property.

If you like cat therapy (and cats playing with pretty girls, I think ..) the kitties have their own channel - I'm showing the host how to do the YT thing .. and I get to have kitties in the garden to help keep the gophers at bay, once we build a little extra cat protective barrier for them - Kitties playing in a garden might have an audience, who knows? www.youtube.com/@TheTechnoCats-sc4rc

Thanks to you Jason, I now know that Tuca Canadensis isn't a species of Dandelion and a wild lettuce, indigenous to North America, not like Latuca Seriola which comes from Europe, but COOL how they thrive side by side. I've cut some Tuca leaves to add to a fresh garden salad and I'm guessing it wasn't bitter because it was still tender, but not anymore and it has bolted, the flower looks like a dandelion flower, but smaller and when the flower has been pollinated and dried, it's also similar looking to a mature, wispy dandelion flower.😊👍

Nature's way of saying "here is one less vegetable that you have to plant. We'll plant it for you!" 😁

I was praising you up today and talking about you nibbling wild lettuce. You reading my mind? ;) Jason, when is the best time to harvest wild lettuce for dehydrating for teas? I heard harvest just before flowering when it sends up the flower head, but the plant gets beat up looking at that point and I am guestioning that approach. Thank you for your awesome videos!😊😊

Many herbs are that way .. get all of the plant's energy right before it transitions to reproduction, or as it enters reproduction .. If you are harvesting whole plants for the latex, it makes a good time .. leave the ones you want for seed, clean up the rest. If I had a mind to make a tincture, I could probably make all I needed from the plants that I cull. Ps .. Thanks for watching!

If I understand aright, the amount of bitterness corresponds to the amount of active medicinal properties. More bitter is more medicinal, less bitter is less medicinal, but more edible.

pretty much. The prickly lettuce is much more bitter, and more effective, by all accounts. It was hard to find Lactuca Virosa that was not hybridized .. most had spines, even if the leaf forms were normal for _virosa._ One note about the latex in lactuca canadensis is that it tends to turn brown quickly, whereas the latex from virosa and serriola remain white, which may be tied to the active ingredient, and overall bitterness. If I wanted to make a tincture, I could probably get enough latex from all of the plants that I culled along the way!

I sometimes think that the children would rather play with the box because it provides more scope for their imagination. IMO, too many toys and games are too structured to exercise imagination and stunt mental development.

I always wanted toys as a kid .. ultimately, I made a lot of my own, and invented games for myself. Restrictions force creativity, or 'necessity is the mother of invention'.
