How to Find Gold Claims

Using the BLM LR2000 database to research if a particular piece of land has gold claims, both active and closed. Also a brief overview of using the PLSS mapping system in Google earth to plot the location of mineral claims.

    starting at 8:39 you click on a bunch of stuff that results in it bringing up overlays showing the claims. how did you do that? i mean to get that map shown at 9:43. that looks really useful but i have no idea how to get to it. thanks for posting but this video leaves me with way more questions than answers. has anyone found a more direct way to show claims on google earth?

    Thanks for making these great google earth videos! I've watched this one about ten times. I have a question for you. I can get info on a claim down to the quadrant of a section, but how do I know where in that quadrant the claim lies? For instance an LR2000 report will say 08s 78w sec31 NE, 20 acres. I cant figure out where that 20 acres is within the 160 acres of the NE quadrant of sec31.

  • @StrayDogCrew

    Unfortunately, the LR2000 only goes down to 160 acres. So if there is a 20 acre plot in that 160, the only way I know of to find the EXACT location is to contact the BLM office in your state. In Colorado, you can just call them with the serial number of the claim in question and they will let me know. Or, if you visit the BLM office in your state, you can ask to see actual mine claim paperwork. It costs 10 cents per copy and since you are accessing a public record, you have to record your name and address on a sheet of paper that is then put in the mining claim paperwork showing you accessed that record. We have had a string of nice days here, and that means lots of work for me. But I want to help you out with this best I can, here is my email address: straydogmining@gmail.com.

    Nicely done. I'm kind of old school and used to papers instead of electrons. This new tech can be useful if you know what buttons to push. There is another circumstance you didn't mention though. When people acquired land by homesteading, it rarely came with the mineral rights. Therefore you can own the land, but not have legal access to the minerals beneath. In fact, a third party can in some cases file on the mineral rights beneath your private property. Before they do, they must notify you though. If that ever happens to you, just file a mining claim first. That is why you CAN have an active mining claim on private property in rare circumstances. Keith

You make it look so easy...I know you've done this a few times but still... Then again I am a newbie at looking up anything related to the BLM. I am most interested in Central Idaho so could you send me some links I could follow to do just what you've done here in this video. Once I learn how to look up in Idaho I can then use that knowledge and look at neighboring states. Thanks for considering my humble request.

    So since you can't locate which 40 acre section within that 160 acre section someone has claimed... are you just making an educated guess when you are plotting these on Google Earth with that polygon tool and assigning colors to them etc? If that's the case your map could be quite a bit off and you could end up panning on someone else's claim don't you think? Maybe (hopefully) I'm missing something here...

  • @StrayDogCrew

    John W Yes, it is a guessing game for the research end. Before I physically go out, I like to call the BLM to verify the location I am going to. When I visit the location, I look for claim markers as well. In Alaska, the BLM database reports the EXACT location of claims to prevent confusion and claim jumping, but Colorado is not so detailed.

  • @mikenichols1045

    @mikenichols1045

    No you are right! If the claim is recorded correctly you will sometimes have a second page to click down on the file report for a mining claim or get a reference on the claim report like SESW or ESESW... However in many cases you just get a SW. Many people use commas which divide up sections but are still using the aliquot system of recording a 20 acre placer claim. If a mining claim is filed correctly in aliquot and match the map you will have the mining claim files that are stated (ESESW) That is East half of the South East South West 1/4's. If you use commas it will mean South East & South West 1/4's And will not match up on the map. However this is a common error people make when filing & is usually overlooked. So if a mining claim file report has SE,SW that should mean South East & South West 1/4's. However in reality it probably means the South East South West 1/4's of section. As you can imagine the many issues this creates for the BLM and the prospector. Lol... But like i said is a very common issue so you will usually just get the larger 1/4 section listed. When you see claims listed as stated above... Smile, That person really knows what he is doing and probably knows where the goods are at! Haha... PLEASE NOTE: Lesson Here...! There is NO COMMA between sections!!! The Land Examiners note a comma as an "AND" Or if you have a claim that takes up 2+ 1/4's you will also get a SW or a SE,SW Etc...! That is why you need to look for corner markers and check county maps if you are in a heavily claimed area!!! GeoCommunicator is a great system and 100X easier with all the tools at your finger tips! You can do everything+++ this guy is doing in 1/8th the time!!! Lol... This was a nice video... But a lot of extra work!!! However the files and color coding of claims was awesome!!! Also the original GeoCommunicator design idea had the mining claim maps documented also, However is sadly not used by the BLM. : ( Best Wishes.....

    Mike Nichols The definitive method is to go to the county recorder's office and look at a copy of the claim notice which must have a map of the claim with distances to prominent objects or survey monuments. From that you should get close, but the claim stakes on the ground are the actual boundaries, not the description or map. In the case of a discrepancy, the monuments on the ground rule.

    The BLM will also offer copies of maps filed with the COL's. However, It Would be nice if they had them scanned for review on line with the mining claim case files! I think the original LR2000 plan was to include them on the public record online but it did not work out!?

    all land is public and for use in all forms by interest claim by the appropriation of its type in use by which ever fiduciary of government that regulates all inclusive for your use. so a tree would be forestry and lands for mineral discovery if you want you go to lands and minerals dept . you find your mining districts and file through the federal court of the district and your miner registry number to finding for claim interest of assay in what you are wishing to allocate for yearly lease hold, landed estate found as lifetime use, or allodial deed title patent grant as legacy life legacy owner a titled deed by clan discovery family name. a miners claim is to lawfully be renewed every year through this Supreme court file system in official record of public file. due process is free and if your filed and delivered to the dept of lands to deliver a certified copy of your claim as this you can mine anywhere because filed is you file copy as owner proof of possession regardless if theres a active claim. done correctly and you will have no contest in court.and id as a certified copy of the deed is your claim proof. way easier than trying to locate a claim in rightt to be active because like a hunting or fishing licsense it must be updated every 28th of february yearly. while a deed tiitle patent is set up until you sell it or allow a lease hold or benefactor. all land is public you just need accept and acknowledge as a natural person name.

    This is ridiculous. only a government could make such an ineffective, slow, cumbersome system. Some amateur coder made minecache which although it is terrible and has issues, is still leaps and bounds ahead of this method.

    its bull shit the government cant do this mapping on their own. what are the maintenace fees for? they should use that money and create a mapping system. its 2020, that guy figured out how to do it just for fun, Imagine if it was actually someones job?
