Also check your state bar association’s website for legal referral, client match and/or legal aid programs. For some matters a legal aid clinic associated with a law school or a community legal service might be in your area. Some enployers also offer a legal benefit that goves you access to discounted legal services.

It depends on what kind of case it is. If it's criminal (especially if it's a first time offense) you need a heavy weight. The people who work in the court houses (clerks, bailiffs) know which lawyer is good and who's a flak, so you should go there and ask them which one you should take with your particular circumstances. All of the people that work there are decent people so you can approach them. Ask one for which lawyer you should take for your particular circumstances. Come back later when the shift has changed and ask 2 or 3 people if the lawyer that was recommended to you is any good. You might have to come up with 20 to 30 thousand, but a really good lawyer can have it so that, you get off scott free and it will not go down in any files. If it's recorded it's stay's in a file for quite a while and can cause problems for work or if you apply for a city job. If it's a minor question about taxes or something like that, again you should check at the court and ask who's a good guy. If you get a lawyer who's decent he or she will charge a minor fee of 50. If that happens pay in cash and tell them you don't need a receipt. It can be when you ask how much, he or she may say "Fuggedaboutit." If that happens, write out a note, telling him or her how much you appreciate it and leave thirty to fifty in an envelope and put it in the lawyer's mail box. Even if it's pro bono. That means a lot to any lawyer because sometimes they work a miracles for someone and the person never even bothered to thank them and that annoys them. Also you might in future have a question for a lawyer and you can call the lawyer that you asked before. In other words, "It's the thought that counts." Believe me, he or she is not going to forget you because you did a courtesy and a lawyer who did not charge anything is gold. Reason being you left a note with a little bit of cash so the guy or gal can have a dinner in Joe's Steak house or take his or her partner out to McDonalds so the money is not a big deal to them. Again it's the thought and that they remember.

Family Law can be absolutely brutal. The best advice I ever received from our family law lawyer (my husband had 50/50 legal, full physical with supervised visitation for the mom) was to show respect to the other side by listening attentively when the other side spoke - and nodding when we agreed or shaking our heads when we didn't. When so many people are fighting out of anger, just doing that made us look more rational. And the lawyer always made us write the first draft of every declaration, which they rewrote. By walking me through the changes, it showed us how to argue the point and what was important for us to do. By the time the hcbm passed due to drug use (we had all the custody but had to keep going back every time she got temporarily clean), I was writing the declarations based on information I knew to look for. The lawyer's review dropped to edits instead of rewrites. Saving her time, and letting us feel like we were meaningfully contributing. All in all, an excellent process. And one I've never heard of others doing. Our lawyer had notes on judges that let them remember the ways a particular judge is likely to respond. She also kept memorable quotes and argued to get the judge to say them. Like "This is your final warning, if you do this again then you are done" - then she got a copy of the stenographer's notes if the judge said it. If she could get him to say that to the other side, all she had to do is say "you gave them your final warning last time and here we are again, I have a copy of the stenographer's notes". And boom, the judge would side with her. If the court gave her client that spiel, she moved heaven and earth to make sure we didn't do it again *and* worked in court to show that this time is different (even if it wasn't). We never left the courtroom in a worse position, even if it wasn't the position we wanted. That was about the best that could be said about joint custody while the biomom was an addict. Your lawyer's office will absolutely show you the ropes and you are a smart and eloquent person who will succeed no matter where you go. I'm just sharing my point because I'm excited for you and I like to share things. I hope you make the best impact you can and that you are fulfilled by fighting this very necessary fight. If it ever gets too bad, or you end up in a case that makes you cry, just imagine how it would be without your help. Imagine the world of hurt they would be in if you weren't there to work with them. Sure, another lawyer might have done it better, but they might not have. You are better than no representation at all. And with the backlog of family law cases, a lot of people go to court unrepresented just because nobody has the time or the price has risen out of their budget. So there are people getting lawyers just by your presence, which is something on the worst days.

At the Santa Fé law library you can get helpful forms and guides created by the staff for just the cost of the copier. Their divorce papers based on "irreconcilable differences and outlook on life" in a mutually agreed divorce say at the top of each page "don't be an asshole" (or something equivalent). That was a much better experience than my second divorce where my lawyer caved completely when my ex hired a much more expensive lawyer who live a few houses down from the judge. He managed to "win" a settlement exactly matching my fees to him.

Congratulations on your new jobs! I have heard again and again that family law is very, very rough for the professionals working there. What's your stance on that in serious? But it would be a fun video seeing you show mocking stereotypical representations of the typical lawyer working in specific fields. A friend of mine is a lawyer that comes in when companies declare bankruptcy and... it just fits. He could as well work for the mafia. And another is international trade law and he's just... this sailor, article writing suave speaker guy...

Some of the types of cases you mentioned, like immigration, don't usually involve the state or even federal courts, they involve federal agencies. So that's one situation where a lawyer anywhere in the US might be a good fit.

I'd say Step One for anyone thinking of hiring a lawyer would be to find out if he or she can afford to hire a lawyer to address the problem at hand. In some cases, it's pure contingency and the client pays nothing up front, while in other cases it will be prohibitively expensive. Those who watched the Heard-Depp trial should bear in mind that both parties spent millions in legal fees to litigate that case, although it's also good to know that certain *homeowner's insurance policies and other insurance policies may provide coverage for legal expenses related to defending against various types of legal actions.*

This entire field of law is like a mine field. • Not all attorneys will take your case if the value is too small!! • Every lawyer has their own view of your case and it can be 180 degrees opposite from other attorney's viewpoint! • Billing is also another huge area of potential abuse and how do you as a client know if the attorney bills you 3.5 hrs for reading a particular document and drafting a response is appropriate?!!! Maybe he could have done this in 45 min??!!!This matters because bill rates at $500.00/hr adds up fast!!! • There are just too many aspects of this profession that the average person won't know because most of us have never been through this process!!!

This may be a silly/unanswerable question: But what level of "problem" should you seek a lawyer? I get the impression (could be wrong) that the legal system & legal advice is SO expensive, you aren't typically going to break even Ex. A discrimination lawsuit: Is it worth it OR is it most likely you aren't going to break even & should just let it go

From my life experience, unless you're the type with a big appetite for conflict and a need to be vindicated, I'd avoid it like the plague and walk away from the situation. Law matters are a lot of time and heartache. Only do it if you stand a very good chance of getting a good payout. Otherwise, move on with your life, and write it off as just another one of life's injustices.
