How to Film Better Interviews as a FREELANCER

Фильм және анимация

In this video we go behind the scenes of my $3,000 interviews as a freelancer and I walk you through my though process when I am on the job creating story videos. If you want to know how to charge more for your videos as a freelancer, it starts with expectation, presentation, and how you manage your clients. I would LOVE to talk more on this and discuss with you how I've been able to secure higher paying jobs as a freelance film maker.
For now, we're going to stick with how to film better interviews as a freelancer. There are a couple things to keep in mind but I usually break them down into three categories as stated in the video; Lights, Audio, and Cameras! Master these three and I believe you're on you way!
AWESOME SONY MIRROR: amzn.to/2UDOrAX
GEAR DISCUSSED IN THE VIDEO:
Main Light: amzn.to/2vPzun3
Secondary Light: amzn.to/2JeNZUD
HUGE Soft Boxes: amzn.to/2QLpjHb
Light Stands: amzn.to/2UvoqUc
Budget Boom Mic I Use: amzn.to/2vO3IXp
Expensive Boom Mic: amzn.to/39jBphl
Audio Recorder I Use: amzn.to/2vQjj95
Haze Filter: amzn.to/2xuSojl
My Primary Camera: amzn.to/2WLl56y
My Secondary Camera: amzn.to/2vM65tM
The gear above are some of the main things I use on all my interviews for my story videos! Good audio ans great lighting are two of the most important things!
The Camera Gear I Use:
Favorite Camera: amzn.to/31ZnZ8j
Favorite Portrait Lens: amzn.to/3bIqhgg
Favorite Zoom Lens: amzn.to/2Svicnx
Favorite Wide Angle Lens: amzn.to/2u1FvMp

Chris Franklin , I was thinking about that. How would that work with a BMPCC with manual focus? Keep both cameras both horizontal so they’re always at a constant focal distance? I didn’t get a chance to see the other tutorial, but I’m guessing they used auto focus cameras.

  • @ChrisFranklinJr

    @ChrisFranklinJr

    4 жыл бұрын

Todd Lloyd Yeah in the other one, they used two autofocus cameras! But for the BMPCC, edelkrone offers a focus module that lets you set focus points and it will automatically pull focus for you! An expensive solution, but a solution. Either that or you can not shift the plane of focus too much!

Chris: I noticed you were using your soft box for hair light. I typically always use barn doors, hard light not diffused and direct that light at a 45 degree angle over their left or right shoulder. I notice that by directing that hard light source to the back of my subject it makes them “pop” more out of the frame and appear even more three dimensional. Have you ever tried using backlight on your subject without diffusion?

I had a gh5 and a bmpcc 6k but got tired of trying to match their color in post. So I sold the gh5 for another 6k. Much easier when the color science matches so the camera doesn't look off going back and forth. Your set ups look good except one thing that you have in studio but not on location, a background light. Maybe a small aputure light or a couple that you could put in the eye glass case or shining on a wall so the person talking doesn't look like they are in a dark room. Or just for those times when the surroundings are boring.

  • @ChrisFranklinJr

Aaron Golden great question! The BMPCC definitely does have a noticeably difference in the quality of video that it produces! It just feels a lot better to me! And most stuff I deliver is 1080 (80%) or 4K! (20%) I use to use two A7iii’s as well before upgrading one to the BMPCC!

Actually, I don't do anything lower budget, I have a set price range that I work in and if the client can't meet me there, then I do my best to work with them but I try not to compromise the worth of the work that I do! So it's kinda all or nothing with me! But if I really had to cut it out, I would go with a Great mic, one light, one reflector, two camera!!

Isaac Rojas solid question! I’m actually working on a color grading video that explains my steps but I usually lower the Sony’s contrast a lot and mess around in the HSL tab to match specific colors. As far as settings, BMPCC 6k @ 24p, 35mm F/1.8, ISO 100 or 200. Sony 4K @ 24p, 85mm F/1.8 - F/2.8, ISO 200-400. I hope that helps!

  • @ChrisFranklinJr

doubledark2 absolutely! I’ll probably further elaborate on this further down the line, but currently I usually shoot 2-4 interviews for a business where employees or management talk about the core beliefs and things that they love about the business. Then I take those interviews, cut them to music, add b roll of the business and create an emotion driven story piece that tells the story of the brand. Usually 3-5 minutes long. I hope that helps! Occasionally I also give them additional highlights from the interviews set to music. Really short, simple, and easy to deliver. I wish I had an example but I’m currently working on that video for the channel!

Todd Lloyd it’s a “Black Pro Mist Filter” , essentially it adds a little bit of haze to your video and takes out that digital sharpness look. It also blooms light and softens skin. It’s REALLY handy when filming people!
