Wow! I've been painting cabinets for quite a few years now, and this video is going to give a big reduction on prep times...so grateful to you. While you were spraying I thought that it might be better to lay them flat and do one side at a time, then you said that. For production spraying I use extension ladders that are set on sawhorses, usually two ladders, and then I carefully cover the ladders with drop cloths. I use a "spin-a-rama " , basically a lazy Susan to place each door on to spin the doors in place to spray the edges and then the flat surface. If you've never tried this method, be sure to raise your doors at least 8 inches off of the spin-a-rama, otherwise you'll find blowback spray gets under the door and leaves a flashing on the underneath. I can easily spray the entire set of doors, setting each on the ladders as I go, go into the kitchen and spray the boxes...and come back out to the garage and remove all the doors from the shelves and flip and spray the other sides...once you get good at this method you can spray the doors as they're laid out on the shelves...the trick is to not angle the spray so that you don't get blowback, to have them separate enough so that no overspray reaches the next door...for extra shelves you can run two 2x4s to each sawhorse shelf...of course you can't spray above the lower doors because of overspray...thanks for your kindness

I used to spray all my doors flat. With proper coatings it can be done in a similar time-frame, and can even build the coatings higher this way. I chose to use the paintline psdr series because it saves a good amount of space, AND there is no risk of over spray, scratching, sticking, or marring from setting down and picking up. BUT, If this is the method you chose, you should check out the drying racks and spray twirly from The Paint Line Company and use my discount code ARTISTSTOUCH to save 10% off they're products.

Thanks for the info, good stuff. Quick tip on the gallon containers, the spout is in that corner for a reason, pour from the other side it will spill less. When you pour the way you did the liquid is contained entirely on spout so when it vents, liquid goes everywhere. If you keep the spout on top and keep container below it, there is air gap in the can that lets it vent easier.

I know they can. Depends on the work you want to put in. As you can see from this video I had not tried this technique yet, and in doing so I found out that with just a nice hammered coat the grain and wavyness was gone. The entire point of the video is not to knock aqua coat, Bit of a click bait I know, but to show how with less hand to door labor as far as applying fillers, wiping out, sanding for multi coats before even trying to paint. This saved alot of time and effort with results that were beyond my expectations.

I like your techniques and teaching methods, but oil based fillers dry in 48-72 hours, while Aqua Coat is ready for round 2 in 8 hours.

Hey, good morning. Yeah, I've never tried the hanging method of spraying, but after watching your video I can definitely see the advantages, especially in space saving. But most of the time there is no room in the kitchen to spray doors and drawers, and the living and dining rooms are also cramped with furniture...so I'm always out in the garage spraying. I just have the homeowner move the cars out, and drop 3 mil on the floor and drap. 07mil on one side of the garage to protect goods and set up my spin-a-rama far enough away from my shelves to stop overspray and then go to town spraying. I've gotten so comfortable with this method that after the front and back first coat, I'll actually walk between the shelves with the doors all laid out and spray a second coat on the fronts without moving anything, I'm super conscious of my spray angle and I'm moving fast enough that overspray doesn't matter because everything is wet, simular to spraying cabinets assembled. My dry time is usually an hour, but I give it an extra hour. It's awesome to look at 30+ doors and drawers all laid out wet like glass...but your method is awesome as well. My system crashed a couple jobs back because the homeowner scheduled the garage floor to be epoxy coated right in the middle of production! It's always something right?

I have done it your way as well as this new way, I also have the portable spray booth from the paintline this is absolutely worth it. Theres a video of me setting it up in the dinning room next to the kitchen because the garage was too small. I also have content of me working in 2 10x10 tents outside my house. And I also have a small set up in my basement when necessary. I also have used a 300sqft shop with self built spray booth and a 1400sqft shop with exhaust wall spray booth. I can do it and get it done in anyway, and you seem to be similar in that manner.

Yes this is 1 way to do it, although I'm not sure i trust the bond of mud to wood and the paint over that. Since this product has been discontinued, the best way I have found now is to sand heavy, spray a generous coat of 2k polyurethane primer, sand flat, fill with a coat of bondo, witch bonds very well to the primer, sand those spots before another coat of 2k poly, and sand that flat. This method is all fast drying, heavy build and time saving. I will have an in depth video on it soon.

Just don't attempt to mix Kilz original and BIN shellac based!! I came up short on the BIN primer and couldn't find any anywhere due to this paint shortage so substituted with a quart of Kilz. Dumped it right in with the BIN into my cup. Sprayed just fine on the few doors I had left but when I went to clean up with alcohol as BIN requires, it all CURDLED into a solid clump and stuck to everything! Spent half an hour scrubbing everything clean with acetone. BIN is really nice primer though.

You know what I think rolling it will probably be the best bet because I've done rolling the stuff with the primer and that pushes it into the grains when the sprayer doesn't really get in there so when you thought process of having them lay down and sprayed what I would do is I would spray right roll right after it like as it's hanging and then spray one more time as is still wet so you know that way it pushes it into the grain and whatnot so I think I'm going to try this method but do a sample and I think this is going to work for you

I was thinking the same thing. That if I wasn't hanging I would rolle them. Surprisingly this stuff filled really well. I hammered these doors really heavily and had quite a high build considering how thin the product is at 100% reduction. If you do this please let me know how it goes because I may want to try this aswell. Only issue would be any orange peel left over, because when sprayed and then sanded when almost cured it is very very smooth. If you wait too long it's like sanding cement.

@@artists_touch_painting the reason why I suggested this is that I use a cabinet coat so I use sticks primer now I use bin primer when I do white but what I've done is I spray the sticks and I have a roller in the spray booth and I just kind of work it in a little bit and then that takes away a lot of the primer so it's translucent so then I spray so what I just rolled over and what that leaves is thicker amount so then what I do is I just lightly block over it and then I spray the sticks and if there's any additional that I need I just pray an extra coat of of paint and then lightly scuff it. But I also tried the other method today which is the drywall mud which I've heard a lot of people do and yeah so I don't like it as much but it sounds very easy just super Dusty so I'm going to give this one a try but the way that I saw your cabinets like that's pretty much how it looks like when I spray primer and so yeah I would say try a sample with that mix then try a sample with the sticks primer and then see what you personally think and let me know

Anything that was remaining I did end up doing by hand so maybe brushing in first is the saving in the long run. Regardless I think another way to achieve more fill would be spraying flat, but with those dry times coverage an all sides takes a bit longer. Thank you for your tip 🙏🏻

@@cornultimatum well It will depend on your exact woodgrain. You may need to even go 3:2 or for very wide opening wood grain you don’t want to thin at all, just forcibly brush it into to get total fill saturation, and for deeper woodgrain you may even want to let the paint sit for a couple minutes before you spray.

Do they still sell this grain filler at Sherwin? I've been a Kelly Moore guy all my life, so I don't know much about what sherwin offers but I cant find it on their website. I have been using aquacoat and it has been a pain in my butt with how it shrinks and requires multiple coats. I usually spray a coat of BIN with HVLP first, then use the aquacoat so I can see the grain pores better, then follow up with my second coat of BIN once I am satisfied with the grain. Then I use two coats of the Gemini Evo Eclipse top coat. But the grain filling is definitely my bottle neck and takes the most time during the door/drawer portion so I would definitely like to find something better. Also I live in California so sometimes my options are limited due to EPA laws. Hah just noticed I have the same spray booth and dry rack from PaintLine.

Unfortunately I believe this product has been discontinued. Your sherwin rep may be able to track some down if any exists in store or warehouse. Now days I find a thing coat of 2k primer sprayed and back rolled, followed by a normal coat of 2k primer does 90% of the filling with ease. 2k primer also blocks tannin. Bin shellac is too brittle and will eventually chip. The remaining grain to be filled is done pretty easily with red bondo spot putty, dries fast, very little shrinking, sands easy.

  • @artists_touch_painting

When done exactly as directed, yes you are to wipe off with a lint free rag. It starts to turn into a white icing type coating. On this I pushed the limits, sprayed crazy heavy, let it run and drip everywhere. Once it was semi-solid, not yet cured, I sanded it back. It powdered up like a doughnut. Realisticly the product should be used as most other fillers in wich you would apply like a paste with a blade, let sit, wipe off. But if your set up with a sprayer, this I think is the way to go hands down. Half the labor. Half the time, twice the quality.

I'm 90% sure that the sher-wood natural filler is discontinued. Aqua coat takes tons of coats, drywall mud will take quite a bit of work, multiple coats, it cracks n crumbles, not necessarily the right thing to smash into wood grain long term. The best way we have found to fill grain now, is good quality 2k polyurethane. It fills, builds, it sands nice, it blocks tannin and dye, spray close 2 good coats. Use bondo spot putty to fill any remainder of grain and pores before top coat.

2k products make life quite a bit easier, but without finishing experience, proper practices in spraying, he will likely have a nightmare of a time. Temps and humidity are important. Flat sanding are important, spray pump, gun, tip are pretty important. Masking, proper ventilation set up etc. Its a specialty. Your neighborhood painter shouldn't really be doing cabinet finishing if it isn't a passion. Yes, 20 min is best but you have to work a side at a time, and it's a bit tough to get on the edges and in certain door profiles. Multiple coats and sanding for max filling. Watered down wood filler, the yellowish brown crystally looking stuff in small tubs from Sherwin is also a similar route. As well as aqua coat and others. This method gives you the ability to cut out hours or even days of labor with better finish, if you can get your hands on this gallon and reducer that is. True. Many of your options are limited when using solvent. Generally speaking though, most people are now finding themselves switching over to waterborne coatings. Regardless, aqua coat is waterbase and this natural wood filler can be coated over with either once cured and sealed. The main difference here is amounts of coats to gain desired pore fill. Most water base fillers evaporate and shrink causing the need for many coats.

My Binks Mach 1 pressure feed gun is HVLP. My turbine guns - Croix , Graco, and Accuspray are HVLP. Turbine guns, like yours, like mine, don't use a compressor to deliver the air, they use a turbine, like a vacuum cleaner motor. My turbine guns are all non-bleeder designs. Bro legit, why are you putting trim enamel on cabinets? You should be putting Kem Aqua (from SherWood) Milesi...Renner..Envirolak or something made for woodworking on those cabinets. Your system is great but that top coat is just literally for trim, it doesn't come anywhere near these 2k coatings whatsoever..esp if they're crosslinked. You said it yourself, it's trim enamel... hand oils will 100% break that down over time, especially around knobs. But this is a killer set up for grain filling, i love it... but look into Renner/Milesi or Kem Aqua since you already use Sherwin stuff. You're already spraying correctly, i can only imagine how durable your stuff would be if you used a high quality finish coat. Like Emrald Urethane is fantastic for your usually trim but coming from someone whos used it on cabinets years ago... if you were to use Renner/Milesi you would never pick up Emerald ever again, i promise you my man. They're made especially for cabinets and they're also water based, you can't put a catalyst or a crosslinker in emerald..those are gonna give you the durability.

But you got a follow! And this is all respect but trust me..look into those finish coats..your clients will fall in love with you. Especially 2-3 years down the road and there's no nicks or scratches..your system is great, its just the finish coat im talking about.

Your preaching to the choir my man. I study endlessly on those product lines. Unfortunately as of now I'm only doing 1 to 2 cabinet jobs a month and some of the top 2ks and euro coatings are not easily accessible to me. Also the lack of controlled environment really takes an issue on finishing. BUT.. I did just this week nail down my new process using the sherwood kem aqua lines, and landed a deal to use a booth in a warehouse, so im glad your following because you're about to witness the come up. I appreciate your comment and you are 100% correct in your suggestions. Like I said, I constantly research, read, and study all of these other coatings, as well as talk to our great industry leaders consistently and will soon be put into effect in my process. Go have a follow on my IG and stay tuned for everything thats comming next 🙏🏻🙏🏻

@@artists_touch_painting Hi I am a newbe to this stuff. I am doing a new Kitchen, unfinished red oak from Lowes, I want white satin top coat. I want to use your approach with the Sher-Wood Natural Filler. Should I go Kem Aqua Primer? Does Kem Aqua have a White Satin? I was going to use White Satin Ultralac till I saw this! Now what? Got cabinets no wax shellaced now.

After the shellac you can apply the natural filler, for this particular project I successfully used the Kem Aqua Plus Surfacing Primer to smooth everything out and give a nice profile. From there you can choose to use the Kem Aqua Plus in white. Its similar to a satin finish or you can apply the clear over it wich comes in gloss, bright, dull, and medium rubbed effects

Maybe not but to get the desired result I only need 1 coat and I am spraying all sides at once. And the sanding of it, if necessary, is a light wipe down with a block. I am also not spending time wiping each edge and bevel and flat with a blade by hand for 30 plus doors and on the boxes inside, wiping off, waiting for dry, re applying to 30 plus doors etc for maybe 2, 3, even 4 coats some times. So in the long run, in my experience, it does save time, and intensive labor.

Why don’t people use a 2 part epoxy high fill primer to fill the grain? Epoxy, polyurethane, or urethane, there are high fill primer’s that can fill oak grain with one spray session. Then you sand and paint/seal.

Yes you can, but to do it by hand or by building up coats takes quite a bit of time and energy. The point I'm trying to make in the video is that spraying a filler saved me a ton of time and labor and gave great results first round.

The best, easiest, fastest and cheapest way is to use drywall mud diluted to a paint texture. Apply with brush in 2 thin layers, sand with fine sandpaper, applying a premium primer and paint using 2 costs of BM Advance paint. Grain is gone. Finished look is professional. Simple.

  • @artists_touch_painting

I disagree. Takes quite a bit of time. Going at it by hand I would prefer wood filler on its own and the rest with bondo glazing putty. Shellac is a necessity when it comes to oak or a 2k primer to block tannin bleed. Over top of that should be a 2k polyurethane top coat to further seal, withstand kitchen abuse and is KCMA approved. Wich advance by BM is not hitting any of those points. Easy. Fast. And cheapest is absolutly never the way to go for quality and longevity

@@artists_touch_painting - sure you can use wood filler and Bondo - and sand until the cows come home. Nothing beats drywall mud diluted for ease of sanding AND covering the grain. As for primer, ZINSSER BIN or SMART PRIME. Those puppies bond to anything. And seal. Two coats of Benjamin Moore Advance to top the project off and it’s a 10/10. Not sure what universe you’re from. But good luck to you.

A sprayer can be rented, also im basing it off of it being a natural wood broken down into a binder. So the wood grain is being filled with wood it also does not shrink back, is able to be sealed as natural wood. The longevity is my basis. Aside from that, my videos are not ALWAYS geared towards the DIY and I believe that in almost every case your cabinets and fine finishing should be done by a professional OR you should follow these professional tips and procedures to do the job right. "What I like to do here is help you grow your business and help the do it yourselfer get the job done right" NOT get the job done "good enough" NOT get the job done "easily" NOT get the job done "cheap" BUT to "get the job done right" in wich case you could do everything suggested by a professional, buy or rent all the stuff, follow the procedures, probably do a pretty damn good job, do it right, and save the money that a pro is charging you due to his experience in the craft.

The only struggle I had with this job in particular was mixing the filler, and dealing with cold temperatures. I spent part of a day spraying and sanding. 90% grain fill, after than anything that I was not happy with got a wood filler put on by hand. The sample I have carried with me for months has held up phenomenally. As well as you must have missed the pictures at the end of the non filled compared to the filler. Half and half. It's a clear, undeniable night and day difference. I'm not sure where you saw a struggle aside from mixing the product. But I am also not the type to hide anything. Get a mixer and fill your grain in a day, find me a better solution that doesn't cost an hour per door multi coat by hand.

How much time per door per coat do you spend? On average people take between 15-30 minutes per door. Times that 30 or more doors per coat. It adds up. I've done it, I've talked to many who do it, and my system in comparison yeilds better pore fill percentage faster. In under an hour 30 plus doors were filled over 90%. In the bevels, on the sides, front and back. 1 coat. The boxes in the kitchen even faster. Wipe on wipe off on the cases and doors adds up. You don't have to agree with this system, but my experience and data proves otherwise. It also wins me more jobs pitching 95% fill or more only adding 1 day labor price.
