3:18 What do you Need to File Taxes?

13:02 Do you need to Charge and Claim HST / GST?
Driving for Uber or Lyft is one of the most flexible jobs in Canada. Whether it’s your full time job, part-time gig, or an occasional source of side income, the rules around taxes for rideshare income are quite specific. Here are the (tax) rules of the road.
If you work for a ridesharing app like Uber and Lyft, all your earnings are taxable, and it’s recommended you put 25% of your income aside for the taxman. To report your income to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), complete and submit Form T2125 - Statement of Business or Professional Activities along with your tax return.
Driving for a rideshare app requires you have a GST/HST number from Day One. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) looks at being a ‘courier’ for a food delivery app and being a ‘driver’ for a ride sharing app as two different business activities, so the tax reporting requirements differ for each.
When you’re a driver for a ridesharing company, you’re considered an independent contractor, not an employee, of the company. This means the company doesn’t withhold taxes from your income on your behalf and means you’ll need to report money you make from rideshare driving as self-employment income.
Being a driver for a rideshare app has different tax implications than being a courier for a food delivery service. Understanding the difference upfront can help reduce headaches and penalties at tax time.

    What if you drive for someones else's company in their company vehicle. You collect all fares and remit them every 2 weeks a % percentage of fares for that period. They pay all vehicle maintenance but driver required to pay 100% of fuel each shift but km's not calculated since all fuel is designated for usage that shift by each driver. How is this accounted for on T2125 or is another option needed.

    Most Uber drivers who are required to file HST returns can file them annually. However, if your annual billings are high, you may have to file quarterly or monthly. You can file your HST return online, by mail, or by phone. You can also claim some deductible expenses that relate to your Uber driving activity, such as mileage, accessories, insurance, etc. To file your HST return correctly and avoid penalties, you should consult the CRA website or a tax professional.

    Hi, you're very welcome. I'm glad this video helped you understand how to file your self-employed tax return in Canada. 😊 As for your question, you may be able to claim some of your car expenses as a tax deduction if you use your car for business purposes. However, there are some conditions and limitations that apply. For example, you can only deduct the percentage of expenses that relates to earning business income, and you need to keep a record of both the total kilometres you drove and the kilometres you drove for business. You can also deduct eligible interest on a loan used to buy the car, but not the principal payments. For more information, you can check out the CRA website or consult a tax professional. I hope this helps. 🙏 If you enjoyed this video, please share it with your friends and family who are self-employed or run a small business. You can also subscribe to my channel and hit the bell icon to get notified of my new videos. I post regularly about personal finance, investing, taxes, and more. 😊

  • @DanishGhaziCPA

    @DanishGhaziCPA

    4 ай бұрын

    If you don’t have your Social Insurance Number (SIN), don’t worry! You can still proceed with filing your tax return. Here’s what you can do: Individual Tax Number (ITN): If you’re not eligible for a SIN, you can apply for an Individual Tax Number (ITN). The ITN serves as an alternative identification number for tax purposes. Use the ITN when filing your taxes instead of a SIN. File Without Your SIN or ITN: If you’ve requested but haven’t received your SIN or ITN yet, you can still file your return without it. Filing without your SIN or ITN will help you avoid any late-filing penalties and interest charges.
