How to face the future when it hits you | Matt Lampert | TEDxFoggyBottom

What happens when the future hits you before you are ready to face it? Matt Lampert's life changed when he stepped on a landmine and lost both of his legs. Yet, Matt didn't let this incident define the rest of his life. Just 18 months after the explosion, Matt was back on his second tour of service, and his story teaches us how we can face insurmountable challenges.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Captain Matt Lampert enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school in 1998. Since then, he has served in a variety of infantry and special operations billets within the military mostly in the Pacific and Middle East regions.
He is a 2006 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and holds a B.S. in history. Matt’s wife, Camille, is also a Naval Academy graduate and Marine officer currently serving as a utility and attack helicopter Test Pilot in southern Maryland. They enjoy camping, kayaking and taking care of their horse. Matt is currently working toward completion of a graduate degree in leadership, education and development from the George Washington University while serving as an instructor and company officer at the Naval Academy.

Matt Lampert is a special breed of marine. My favorite lampert memory was from boot camp when he told our drill instructors they were letting us down by not training us. He got chewed and quarter decked by just about every drill instructor in the company and was carrying around several hundred pounds of laundry bags around Paris island for what seemed to be an eternity. No one worked harder than him and no one took their job more seriously. Happy Independence day Matt. Hope you're doing well.

We're exceptionally proud of Matt Lampert and his embodiment of our motto, spiritus invictus, or unconquerable spirit. Semper Fi, Marine.

I went to Culver Military Academy for three years with Matt. He lived across the hall from me and I can attest to his inspiration and leadership. From day one, he worked harder than anyone and had a sense of pride, duty and honor that I've never seen. I was heart broken when I first heard about his tragedy and am so proud to know heroes like Matt still exist. If anyone could persevere a situation like that, it's Lampert.
