    A part of the final exam for an organic chemistry lab course was to follow a synthetic procedure to get a product. They did it in pairs. So a couple of students got to prepare acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). At the end they were supposed to get crystals but instead they were left with some wierd yellow oil with no chance to crystallize. They were sure they had failed the test. Until one of them remembered he had a pack of aspirin pills in his backpack. Bingo! They quickly crushed them, extracted with chloroform, and recrystallized to get really nice crystals. So the prof came and examined the product. He asked them many questions about the procedure, reaction conditions etc. At the end he scratched his head and said: "You know, every year we get this wierd yellow oil, but you guys were the first to get crystals!"

    How did every year all get yellow oil? The specific extraction for the test what different from what they quickly did last minute?

    @@spiderman1579 I guess that the procedure they gave students year after year was not very reliable and did not lead to the desired product, but the profs were too lazy to look for another one and didn't care. On the other hand, commercial aspirin does, of course, contain a lot of aspirin, so the students were able to recrystallize it.

For reference I’m talking about phenol (an altered benzene), another interesting chemical to look at the molecular orbital model is ferrocene(it’s an iron benzene sandwhich)

    +Fabian Müller It really really depends on what it is. I love it when I can find a PDF that students use for labs, but often that isn't the case. Depending on what it is, it is usually a mix of using Scifinder (paper search engine), reading forums like ScienceMadness, googling, searching google books, and using my own knowledge. I am going to try to post my sources better in the future.

    If my chemistry teachers had been even 1/10th as inspiring as your videos, I would have been much more interested in chemistry. I got As and learned everything they taught me, but never really cared about the possibilities. The worst chemistry teacher I had would just come in, write the text word-for-word from the textbook on the whiteboard as he spoke it, then he would call it a day. I remember labs where we collected data, messed something up, then did some creative math to work backwards to get to the desired result. I also remember splashing some pretty strong acid on my shirt and being embarrassed, I hid it and completed the lab while my shirt slowly dissolved. Those were the good old days!

    I was pretty fed up with lactose in my medication so I started to extract the Temazepam and it forms such lovely crystals after an ethanol or methanol extraction but I feel like it kills the potency, perhaps during the drying stage in which I left it covered with some paper towel overnight for all of the solvent to evaporate so I never really continued doing so but the crystals which form are very beautiful and there is something about having crystals of Temazepam which made me a little giddy inside.

    Excellent video as always. I plan on synthesizing caffeine from uracil in the lab later this week. I have also heard of it being synthesized from theobromine, though I do not have access to that reagent so I've decided upon the uracil method. Any plans to do a caffeine synthesis video, rather than extraction? Cheers from Ontario.

  • @NileRed

    @NileRed

    8 жыл бұрын

    Actually I do plan to make it from theobromine. It should be pretty easy to do. I was going to try to extract theorbromine from cocoa and make caffeine. But I don't know if its possible to get a clean extraction. Otherwise I can buy theobromine and synthesize it. Going from uracil is also an interesting method.

  • @JeffandJake

    @JeffandJake

    8 жыл бұрын

    If you have a chance, I recommend checking out the protocol available online for the uracil method. It's a far newer procedure compared to the theobromine method, and yields seem to be in the mid 80s which is definitely more promising than the comparatively low yield from theobromine. Either way, looking forward to your video on caffeine synthesis.

  • @NileRed

    @NileRed

    The theobromine method has the advantage of being like one step. I just found that uracil can be made from maleic acid and urea, very interesting. This could be a nice ground up synthesis. Is there an easy OTC source of maleic acid/anhydride?

  • @JeffandJake

    @JeffandJake

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Nile Red As far as I know, maleic anhydride/acid is used in fuels and plastic polymers, so I imagine the extraction would be fairly complex as there's a huge number of interacting molecules in there. I know that you can produce maleic anhydride through oxidation of benzene or butane, check out "A study of the catalytic oxidation of benzene to maleic anhydride" by Basil Dmuchovsky et al. Urea is obviously available readily through your lab's supply chain or can be extracted from urine (though I don't know if that would make for a good video...). Do you not have access to uracil? It's fairly inexpensive at around $0.80/g CAD, not sure if you've got it in stock though. I'm in the process of acquiring equipment to perform the synthesis, I work in a molecular bio lab so I'll be borrowing some glassware that we haven't got on hand. Also, looking forward to your luminol video, we use that reagent quite often in lab.

    A little something from eMedicine Emergency: The symptoms of lidocaine toxicity tend to follow a predictable progression. The toxicity begins with numbness of the tongue, lightheadedness, and visual disturbances and progresses to muscle twitching, unconsciousness, and seizures, then coma, respiratory arrest, and cardiovascular depression. CNS toxicity: When the lidocaine dose is increased from 1 mg/kg to 1.5 mg/kg, the risk of CNS toxicity increases from 10% to 80%. Symptoms include the following: o Lightheadedness, dizziness o Visual disturbance o Headache o Perioral tingling, numbness or tingling of tongue o Sedation o Impaired concentration o Dysarthria o Tinnitus o Metallic taste o Muscular twitching, tremors With progression of toxicity, the patient may experience tonic-clonic seizures and, eventually, unconsciousness and coma. Seizures generally do not occur with lidocaine levels of less than 10 mcg/mL. Cardiovascular: Excessive lidocaine concentration can cause cardiovascular toxicity, although this is less common than CNS toxicity. Lidocaine is somewhat less cardiotoxic than lipophilic local anesthetics such as bupivacaine. Risk of cardiac toxicity is greatest in those patients with underlying cardiac conduction problems or after myocardial infarction. Potential cardiovascular effects include the following: Negative inotropic effects Effects on vascular tone (with low doses having vasoconstrictive effects and higher doses causing relaxation of vascular smooth muscle) Effects on cardiac conduction include widened PR interval, widened QRS duration, sinus tachycardia sinus arrest, and partial or complete atrioventricular dissociation. Cardiac arrest has been reported after intraurethral administration of lidocaine. Cardiac toxicity is potentiated by acidosis, hypercapnia, and hypoxia, which worsen cardiac suppression and increase the chance of arrhythmia. This is important to consider since seizure makes this metabolic picture more likely. Plasma lidocaine levels of less than 5 mcg/mL are unlikely to have cardiovascular toxicities. Levels of 5-10 mcg/mL can cause hypotension by inducing both cardiac suppression and vascular smooth muscle relaxation. Levels of more than 30 mcg/mL are associated with cardiovascular collapse. CNS symptoms may be masked in patients premedicated with anticonvulsants such as benzodiazepines or barbiturates. The first sign of toxicity in these premedicated patients may be cardiovascular system (CVS) depression. When blood levels are high enough to block inhibitory and excitatory pathways, convulsions cease and the patient experiences respiratory depression or arrest and cardiovascular depression. Large bolus injections may increase peak anesthetic levels to the point where the CNS and CVS are simultaneously affected. I'm gonna do eeeeet !!!!

Oftentimes meth is a main ingredient because with no tolerance, it has near identical effects orally (there have been studies on it for psych help [like MDMA for PTSD could have meth for PTSD as a possible substitute). Meth is found more often than MDMA in ecstasy. Another common combination is MDA and MDMA, which is more neurotoxic (you should take it less often to be safe), but considered more euphoric. Just because one thing claims to be something doesn’t mean it is that when it’s illegal. For example people being given fentanyl as heroin.

    Hi, i'm try to answer ur question about understanding the recrystallization. From the chart given, you can see that the povidon and caffeine both soluble in water, BUT, in cold water the solubility of caffeine drop to 2g/100ml, meaning, if both the pv and cf is soluble in hot water ,when the temperature goes down its suppose to retain the pv inside the water while the cf solubility decrease and recrystallised. therefore, pv fully dissolved in ther water while cf recrystallised and filter off. yield lost of caffeine is because after each recrystallization there are still some caffeine will dissolve in the water. Any recrystallization step will lead to a lost

    Hey guys, I have 2 questions. Ive been trying to make potassium chlorate from 14% sodium hypochlorate but for some reason im doing stuff wrong. Ive tried 7 times and my only successful run yielded about 3 grams. I was also trying to make nitric acid with HCl copper and a nitrate salt (im only 15 so I dont own a fractional distillation apparatus) from an Erlenmeyer flask with a a tube connected to it. So ive successfully gotten NO2 gas but when I bubble it in water I just get a blue solution( witch im thinking is copper sulfate).And doesnt react whatsoever with copper or silver but it bubble when it comes in contact with lime. So anyone have any ideas on whats up with that?

  • @pietrotettamanti7239

    @pietrotettamanti7239

    7 жыл бұрын

    A black hole you are doing things completely wrong. you need ONLY a nitrate salt and a strong acid. copper isn't required. no, you can't use HCl because you would boil away it with the nitric acid. the reaction HCl+KNO3------>KCl+HNO3 is an equilibrium. this means that the products can also react to reform the reactants. to fix this you have to boil off one of the products, so they can't react. this can't be done with HCl because you would boil away it first than the nitric acid. you have to use H2SO4 and KNO3. H2SO4 boiling point is much higher than nitric acid one. you produced NO2 because the nitric acid reacted with the copper. why did you put the copper in that reaction? and why did you think that the blue solution was copper sulphate? there wasn't sulphur in your reactants, how could the sulphate be there? the solution was copper nitrate. for the potassium chlorate i haven't an answer, i don't know your procedure. one last thing to point out: nitric acid, potassium chlorate... even the dumbest chemist would understand what you want to do. I know your reasons, as i am very similar to you and at our age (i'm 16) everything that explodes or burns is intresting. but, trust me, you have to study first. chemistry isn't only breaking bad and explosives. you can't just mix together some shit and watch what happens without understanding as you did with the nitric acid. you will seriously harm yourself in a short amount of time. you can't just study a little bit of chemistry and then searching the procedures on internet. you have to fully learn chemistry and then you will start studying that amazing the branch of explosives. but it is a branch, not the centre. maybe you won't take me seriously because i'm 16. i started studying it 2 years ago and now i'm 2nd at the chemistry games in my country (italy). but I studied hard and i'm not even near to the half of the road. i'm a real chemistry nerd. take chemistry a little more seriously pls

    Love your videos. Please consider doing a video about extracting nicotine from cigarettes. Possibly very practical for people wanting to make their own vaping liquids.

    +XCyclonusX If one were to do that it would be less expensive to purchase raw tobacco for that process. Plus the tax would be lower in most cases. many states impose an extremely high tax on finished tobacco products but not nearly as much on raw tobacco leaves. As a business venture those substances are extremely lucrative. In my medium size city there are a dozen separate businesses solely engaged in the manufacture of vaping liquids and most are relatively small start-ups. One started three years ago with just the owner. He has over 100 employees today and has to expand into larger facilities three times since founding. I'm not personally interested in this particular industry but it is definitely a lucrative business and with a huge potential for expansion. If you are producing your own for personal consumption you should also know that you could grow your own legally. It's just another plant and relatively easy to grow. All you need is some land. Or you can grow it in flower pots if you don't own land.

    Practical, but possibly fatal if somebody misplaced a decimal point. I've been using crap pipe tobacco soaked in water overnight as an insecticide for years. The liquid makes a kickass spray, and the soggy tobacco leaves around my tomatoes are for the slugs. (Don't say it- Tomacco! No, there's no murderous goats around yet!)

    XCyclonusX I am Pretty sure pure ethanol will release nicotine from tobacco but How to measure the mic's or mill's is beyond me.
