How to Expose & Color Grade SLOG 3 - Sony A6700 FX30 FX3 A7IV A7SIII A1 A7RV
Ойын-сауық
A tutorial on how to get proper exposure and color grade Sony Log Footage (S-Log 3) from a Sony A6700 FX30 FX3 A74 A7S3 A1 A7R5. I go over exposing using the histogram outside and zebras/gray card inside with controlled lighting.

Thank you for the kind words. Glad you found this useful.
Josh, as a new content creator, new FX 30 owner, interested in S-LOG 3, but equally intimidated shooter, AND a final cut user - I can't possibly thank you enough! This might very well be the most valuable piece of educational content specific to my needs I've EVER seen. Trust me, I've watched countless hours in the pursuit! Greater still, you provide such in-depth information for both in door/controlled and outdoor variances in shooting. As I'm sure you're aware, a lack of confidence in using gear can stifle creativity. Your video has given me the knowledge and confidence to start creating, rather than the perpetual state of consuming. Keep up the great work! 🤘🏻

Very well explained with killer examples. One of the best on this topic on KZread.
My feelings of gratitude clearly aren't occupying this comment section alone. You are an awesome teacher. As someone who recently graduated with a digital media degree and instantly became the sole videographer for a company, I'm pretty overwhelmed at the ridiculous amount of minute detail that goes into the craft. I'm super meticulous and don't like leaving stones unturned. Thanks so much for your content. It's incredibly useful. I just got an FX30 and have bee super stressed about learning all of the functions. This content is Golden :)

Thank you for taking the time to make and share such a useful tutorial. I especially appreciate your guidance not to make every shot look the same in terms of exposure. I learned this the hard way with photo editing. The world is beautiful because of its variability--embracing that imperfection is part of the joy of post-production.

Super helpful! I find shooting with the LUT on (loaded by me) in the FX3 allows me to nail my exposure every time. Then in post, I just apply the LUT and I’m essentially done. Like you said, there are a million different ways to do it, just have to find the right one for your workflow.
Thank you for taking the time to explain these important topics in such a concise and useful manner. After upgrading to the zv-e1, I wanted to take advantage of SLOG and you really made things clear. I appreciate it, I’ll be keeping an eye on your future videos!

Perfectly explained! I've watched heaps of other videos regarding proper exposure in SLOG3. Most explanations circulated around the exposure multimeter and zebras around 94. My highlights were blown out most of the times...this was driving me crazy! Your explanations for in and outside made the most sense for me. I don't own an nd filter (yet), but my results were consistent. Had to change the ISO though. Thanks a lot 💪!

What a great video! You've show concepts in practice in a very intuitive way. Indeed you're correcting/grading. I prefer to use a CST to a wide gamut intermediate color space and gama curve that will take care of the color correction in a mathematically sound way. Then I'll take care of the grading if needed.

Hi Josh, after going over this extremely carefully and getting my indoor and daytime outdoor workflows up to speed, I have also been experimenting with outdoor night video. What is your exposure strategy for outdoor nighttime video in terms of zebras, ISOs, grey card, etc.? (I assume you'd still use S-log3?) And how do you then color the footage in Final Cut? Thank you so much!

@@Josh_Sattin I do have one question if you mind. If you are shooting outdoors and there are changes in light, say a cloud and the scene gets dark. Do you recommend just keeping it manual and locked, and just fix it in post? Or is it better to use flexible ISO?

Thankfully, a proper guide on how to expose properly Slog3. Many youtubers are giving advise to overexpose your footage 1 stop higher by raising the ISO, without realizing that its actually not advisable to raise ISO (unless the camera has dual native ISO and you are using the 2nd native ISO) to overexpose as the higher you raise the ISO, the lower the dynamic range will become and will also raise up the noise floor. As for the grading part, if you are not using Davinci Resolve for its color management (the most accurate way to transform your footage), its better to use Sony's official Slog3 to REC 709 LUT because it will accurately transform your footage to how you really shot it. The problem with manually transforming it is that you really are just guessing on how the scene really looked like when you shot it vs using the official LUT wherein it has the right equation on properly transforming your footage to Rec 709 with the proper middle grey as the basis. Put it at the end of your workflow , basically as an Output Device Transform or ODT then color correct or grade upstream. Saves so much time vs manually mapping out Slog3 to Rec709
Zebras are your friends! I've been shooting video for over 20 years. Most of the time, I don't have time to use a grey card or a white card. I use the zebras based on skin tones. If I'm shooting log with the 709 LUT, I'll set them for 70, or actually 68 or 65 (use the custom settings). If I'm using dynamic range assist or just looking at LOG, I'll set them for 50 because the zebras correlate to the LOG, not the DRA LUT. If I'm shooting S-Cinetone, on my FX9, I've been setting then for ~62. This lets you meeter off of skin, or concrete, or light colored tree trunks, or all kinds of things that are in that approximate luminance range. Caucasian or asian faces I let the zebras cover about 30% of a face. For darker skin tones I might do ~15 % or just the highlights. Darker skin tones can be 10+ IRE less than lighter ones. If you expose them at 70, you can actually over expose them. Kofi Yeboah did an excellent video called 4 Easy Exposure Tips to Perfect Dark Skin Tones with S-Log 3 which I highly recommend.

please Brian explaine me. I set 41 Zebra and did everything like Josh did but with all these settings Zebra is everywhere in my screen(( I think that 41 of Zebra is too much for S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3
Very helpful. I’m finally going to give this a shot. Base iSO on A7S3 for slog3 is 640. That was the only thing diff from the video. I’ll check my A74 next, which per this video showed 800. Thanks for this info! Subbed
Thank you so much for this. I’m still learns log3 and s cinetone i was told for a log 3 set my zebras to 94 plus. On my Sony a7iv. I also don’t have any luts.

Nice video. I like this histogram method and will definetly give it a try. I have been playing with skin tone zebras for run and gun stuff but it does make it harder to see what is on the screen so if one can get used to exposing well with the histogram that sounds ideal. For grading a simple color space transfrom in da vinci seems more accurate... im also quite new to da vinci but i 100% recommend switching. It does seem a little annoying that log seems to perhaps more effected by iso and ND filters seem more necessary, especially as they can effect quality and colour which is the purpose of using Log in the first place but I guess we can't have everything.
Lovely video!

Hi, i just found your channel and it's great. One thing that I wanted to ask... so, basically if you make the (loose) comparison to analogue fotography, in log you have two isos, and shooting in ei is similar to push-pull process with film?
Thanks for the helpful video. I know you said to ignore the M.M. value (manual mode), however, why can't you use this in lieu of the histogram? I've ready a good ETTR value is around 1.3 which I think your value was close to this after you made your adjustments.
Great video, it is very useful. Thx Josh… Can you try with lut ? Thx
@Josh_Sattin

You're welcome. I generally don't use LUTs. I'm just sharing my process.
Hey! Thanks for such valuable content! So… to sum up so I understand it… 😅 You expose (with the 41 setting for zebras) letting them pop on the grey card? Right when they start showing, that’s the proper exposure? Thanks so much man!
Fantastic video, but what if I dont have the grey card always with me? How much percent should be the zebra be in that case?
beautiful video really nice, could you give us your export settings? I film with the SonyFx3 slog3cine and the new 4k dci but when I export in 1080 after a slight colorgrading the quality is horrible with pixels in the black thanks for your answer
Thank you!!! I'm in wayyyy over my head 😂😂😂
Thank you very much for watching the video. I have a question. Is there anything I should check if I assume that the color space is set to HDR or PQ and edit it instead of rec. 709? I think it comes out much brighter when editing it with the color space of rec. 709
thank you
