How to Export for Instagram in 2024 // Lightroom Classic

In this video, Forest talks about the best settings for exporting your photos out of Lightroom Classic and posting them on Instagram.
Lightroom makes exporting easy, but Forest shows you some tweaks that you can make in the export settings dialog to make your photo perfectly sized for posting. Instagram has certain parameters for photos; knowing this before you go into the social media app can help you keep control of the overall look of your images.
Part of this is because Lightroom’s resizing algorithm is way better than Instagram’s resizing algorithm, so doing all your photo changes in Lightroom before you go to Instagram helps you keep control of how your photo is being compressed.
Also, exporting is basically just making a copy of your original photo with its edits attached to it, so once your photo is on Instagram you can delete the exported version of your photo with no fear.
All of this really comes down to three important things:
1. Where you want your photo to go.
2. What type of file you want.
3. What size your file is.
You can save all these export settings as a new exporting preset that you can continually use to export for Instagram in the future. You could even name it, “Forest’s PRO Instagram Export” 😉
We want to help you get your photos into the eye of the world without losing too much of the quality of the image.
We would love it if you tagged us (@rockymountainschoolofphoto) in your next Instagram post that you use Forest's PRO exporting method on!

    Forest, there are a lot of LrC Export videos out there and it's funny, they all are somewhat similar but still not the same. Your video (out of all the one I mentioned) is the only one that makes any sense. Less confusion is good! I appreciate your efforts. ✌

  • @DylanRotich

    @DylanRotich

    As long as every image you're exporting is the same orientation you can use that. I exported a bunch of 4 x 5 vertical images yesterday using short edge 1080. If you exported a mixture of both landscape and vertical images the landscape images would be the wrong size. (assuming you're still using short edge 1080. vice versa with long edge 1080)

    So if I don’t want to crop my edited image for Instagram to 1.91:1 or 4:5 because my main objective is to edit it the way I like it to look for a print then what are my choices? Do I make a virtual copy of the original RAW before I start editing so I have 2 versions or can I go back to my very first edit being the crop and change it without undoing all the after crop edits? Struggling with this and needing some advice. TY.

  • @danlightened

    @danlightened

    I guess you can do all your edits according to your print requirements and export as usual. Then go back to the develop module, crop it for Instagram and use the settings he suggested to export and that creates a separate file for Instagram.

    Exports are always copies of the original images in Lightroom. You can always delete the exports from your USB drive once you've done what you are going to do with them. If you ever need them again, just re-export.

    The only way to do that is by stretching the image which will make things look distorted. I don't recommend it. In the future, if you have an aspect ratio you need to fit to, shoot your images a bit wider than you need to leave room for cropping.

    Hi Pete! To get them from Lightroom to Instagram, do everything this video says and export them onto your desktop, then you will have to get them somehow onto your mobile device or wherever you post from. I recommend either Google drive or emailing them to yourself and then download them onto that device. Then all you have to do is post! I hope that helps!

    Jpg 👎PNG 👍 With heavily processed images, with (for example) super aggressive curves for that matte look, jpg’s can sometimes get banding. Whereas, you can export the exact same image as a png, and then banding is fixed. Whilst Instagram does convert to jpg, on the way in, the png is read at a higher quality. ✌️

    I thought you don't want them to compress your images so you should do it yourself. I've seen a lot of videos say that if your file size is too large, Instagram will compress it themselves and it might come out weird

  • @danfarmer_photo

    @danfarmer_photo

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DylanRotichWhat you’re referring to is compressing the image by resizing it. I still export in the correct dimensions. Jpg VS png is simply referring to the file format (or container). The biggest advantage of PNG over JPG is that the compression is lossless, meaning there is no loss in quality each time it is opened and saved again. (Without going into the full details, it is the way the compression tools read the ‘string’ or ‘code’ in the file’s image data by matching those longer sequences to accompanying short codes already in the data). PNG also handles detailed, high-contrast images well which is what I was originally referring to. So, by converting to JPG first, you’re essentially compressing your image as this process is ‘lossy’. Then, whilst Instagram won’t resize it if you’ve already done so, it still goes through Instagrams compression AI to lower the file size (not the image size) regardless. That is the biggest misconception when people think that Instagram won’t compress a correct size jpg. Simple not true. You can even test it yourself by changing your Insta settings to ‘save a copy’ of the uploaded image (post) to your camera roll. Then, use this saved/downloaded file from Insta, upload it again and repeat the process a couple of times and you watch the image quality become total mush (obviously delete the post each time so you’re not uploading the same image over and over to your feed 🤣). So, in conclusion, a jpg is compressed lossy twice when you upload it to Instagram, whereas a PNG is going in as a lossless file only being compressed once from Instagram when it converts it to jpg. I hope that explains it somewhat.

    @@danfarmer_photo I have noticed this on FB. I've seen memes in my memories that I had shared from someone else. If I share it again it's usually degraded a little. I've seen images shared many times to the point that you can barely make out what's in the image. I always thought PNG was for using transparency until someone told me about uploading to social media this way. IG is moving more towards videos and away from pictures. I don't use my IG account to promote my pictures so it's not a major issue with me. A lot of people are going to Twitter to share their images. That's fine if you're building an unknown audience. I mainly share my pictures for friends.

    Well. I can safely say that my recommendations are probably different since I took them directly from the Instagram spec sheet (and not just from another creator). Many content creators just copy one another and there is a lot of misinformation out there on the topic.

    They’re harder to find since Classic has been around a lot longer.
