The Wilderness Protocol is absolutely fascinating! Even in Eastern GA there's areas with no cell signal, or there's blackouts from bad weather, definitely will be observing it when I get my license!

Same here... gun guy who wants to prep for SHTF comms after letting my old ham radio license lapse 25 years ago - got my old Basic license mid-80s in middle school (KA9RJH was my old callsign) which was CW-only back then... I hear it’s kinduva forgotten art these days...? Anyhow think more about use cases and scenarios for those of us fearful mainstream comms may go away around Election Day.
Complete newbie to Ham. I'm watching and reading and following you to try and put all this together so I can make informed decisions. Thank you!
Hoshnasi you've got a finger on the pulse of the ham youth.
When I'd be at a restaurant....especially fast food places...and put the HT on the table. Fellow hams would (occasionally) stop by to say hello. Also, had a magnetic bumper sticker made for one car (and put a sign in the rear window in another car) letting people know that I'm monitoring 146.52 Simplex. It has yielded QSOs!!

I EDC my FNX and FNP ACP .45 every time I leave the house. Bigger works just fine for me!!
A little note on the FT-70, it can run entirely on external power using its internal charging port. While I do have two batteries for it, I am also building a USB battery bank adapter for it, which allows me throwing my 70Wh battery bank at it.
Really enjoy your videos. Just passed the test yesterday. Now I await
I was looking at the G43 (Huge Glock fanboy) and was at our LGS filling out paperwork for one... then asked to see a Springfield Hellcat on a whim... QUICKLY snatched it up! Fit my hand better, comes with a compact AND extended mag, almost double the mag capacity, has a light rail and far superior sights (in my opinion). Been carrying it ever since and do not wish for a second I had stuck to the G43.
Really liked the Morris code work at the end of the chat. First time breaking down the code. Made it 80% through before loosing my place. Hahaha
The UV-5R "None of the features, none of the cost," killed me 😂
Thank you SO MUCH for showing me the morse code tool at the end♡ You are a bad ass :)

My first EDC (just got it), is a Yaesu FT-65R which accompanies my LCP II.
45:48 I like how the chroma key makes the FT2DR look like a hollow radio with a window.
Just got the N9TAX Slim Jim J Pole. Great antenna. EDC is G26 w/TLR-6 and FT3D. Speaking of .357, I had a S&W 686 with 4” barrel. Wish I still had that one.
The chance for damage / loss increases with the cost of the radio - I'm convinced of this. I've never lost or physically damaged a Baofeng. I've had them break, but that's just the nature of a cheap radio. I bought a vx-6r and EVERY TIME I've taken it out, I have to hunt it down!
Sup man I love your videos and have learned a lot thank you

Very informative and inclusive video. Thanks for posting. I've learned to carry my FT-3DR now along with my Glock 42, while I'm hiking and cycling. I'd love to find a quality BT ear piece. My PowerBeats Pro are great but they don't pair with my radio. You'd love that Glock 42 by the way; lightweight, accurate, easy to conceal, and powerful enough.

I EDC a Wouzon KG-UVD1P with the battery eliminator cig. lighter cord in my work truck. The program memories will drop and the radio will default to factory if left unpowered for too long. Keep a standard battery on it when stored. I keep a backup of the program freqs. in KG-UV Commander, or you can use CHIRP.

My EDC is a GLOCK 30s - an HT is secondary.
G19.5 with a few upgrades and a BF-F8HP here.
I already carry a knife and flashlight. My wife carries the cell phone. Don't know that I'd have much use for a HT. But if I drove out in the mountains, yeah, I'd carry one.... As for handy talkies, Josh, I would _very much_ like to see you spearhead a drive to have the FCC designate two frequencies, one in UHF and one in VHF, as emergency frequencies. In cases where cell phones become dead. Then, with emergency frequencies, one with an inexpensive radios can easily communicate with helicopter and airplane pilots. These frequencies need not be dedicated, which is the beauty of it. Just designate the frequencies. Let people continue to use them if desired (the more ears on them the better), just designate them for emergency use. If they have to break every 15 minutes for 45 seconds, fine. But we need them, and you have considerable influence. It could save lives...nay, it _would_ save lives. Then carrying radios would make more sense.

Often carrying a radio isn’t to help yourself, but to help others. For instance using the wilderness protocol. Regarding your request to define a shared frequency. I’m unsure of that is possible or not. It’s a good question.

I wish I'd known about this channel when I first got my tech license. I went to my first and last club meeting. Never went back. I wasn't very welcomed. Sadly if you're not an older chubby guy they just don't include you in anything. I saw no reason to go back. Never found anyone to get advice from. I ended up practically giving up getting good at it. The guy in charge of the club now is an old instructor of mine who raked me over the coals for asking a question once in class. So now I definitely won't go to any of the meetings. He was only there for the check. He wouldn't help his students. He had 3 favorites and they were the only ones that got help.
My edc is a g20 and uv-5r+
Hey, I completely appreciate your everything - keep up the kickass stuff! Question; the ABREEEEE antenna... basically, like you said, sort of like those "slap bracelets" - just out of curiosity, d'ya suppose it might be more than possible to MacGyver something similar and compatible from a woodworker's tape measure? I'm very much into "Homebrew" radio *anything*, so I'm very interested in your input on this - any thoughts? Might the answer be as simple as I suspect? Great video. First live stream I've made it through all the way. Great info and my everyday carry is SA XD40 and a Tidradio TD-H6. Question: What software are you using for all your video switching and pulling your chromakey? We use vMix for a weekly live webcast. Comment: I noticed your main camera is using auto-focus. You can tell because when you move quickly closer and back it loses focus and hunts to find it again. You may want to shift to manual and set the focus for the spot you are seated. 73 KJ7RDY

@@HamRadioCrashCourse It was meant in a good way. I watched this one again last night, as I'm trying to decide which radio to EDC (Currently a Baofeng GT-5R, but considering at Wouxun KG-UV9P or Yaesu FT-65R) and you brought up a question that I've been wondering about a lot. Do you just load the VHF / UHF Simplex frequencies at the top of your radio, or do you break it out to include the entire group of simplex frequencies for your area? We don't have a ton of traffic on simplex, based on my monitoring around town, but I agree that it should be first on my channel list. Just not sure how far to take that. So, how do you implement that?
@HamRadioCrashCourse
2 жыл бұрын
I just place 2m & 70cm simplex calling frequency.
FT-60 both transmits and receives 2m and 70 cm. No commercial reception, but some extended receive. And it is bulletproof! I have a gait problem, and fall sometimes, and I fell on top of this radio onto the sidewalk while taking a...walk. It got scratched-up fairly badly, but still works fine. When I still had a job, I bought four of these, as they were very inexpensive, and the later ones even came with their own drop-in chargers! (Lost 2, 1 in living room, 1 in bedroom). You really cannot go wrong with this radio. My one complaint is that some things are too complicated; I have to look at the manual every time I need to block a channel from scan, and I am a nuclear engineer with an IQ of 142, so I doubt if I am the only one who thinks this. Anywho...73, KB5AVP OH, and the AA battery holder, which holds 8 AA cells, lets you xmit with all 5 watts. I always buy the drop-in quick chargers and the AA battery packs, for "just in case".
"This is D-Star country boyyyy" Thick country twang w/attitude. Old fudds are exactly why I quit messing w/ham 2 years ago and sold my gear. Getting a FT3DR solely for my get home bag and emergency stuff. Have no interest in listening to 80 year old dudes talk about their shacks and ole ladies all day. 3DR is definitely overkill for what I need but the color touchscreen sold me I hate learning a bunch of button combos and deep menu patterns and I make enough money to splurge on convenience.
I can't help but think when I look at it that they cut like an inch off or maybe two like the proportions and everything it's an HT cut in half lol
I also get my radio in to Disney World no problem.
Kind sir, Would you say that the 1.) BaoFeng UV-S9 Plus 2.) BAOFENG GT-3TP Mark-III Are as good or better than the UV-5R? I'm looking to buy/collect 3 or 4 of these radios. One will be kept in my car for emergency use, the others will be kept as spares, or should I just purchase (3) UV-5R's
Josh, I’m looking for a desktop computer for my shack. I have a Mac laptop for other stuff, I have chirp on my computer at work but, now I’m stepping into DMR and the computer at work won’t do it. (I don’t have the authority to instal the software for my UV-380) next logical step is buy a desktop for home. Can you mention at some point what one should look for in a computer (to run Windows 10) for the shack plus everyday general use.
