The Church was a major teacher of people-pleasing thinking and behavior in my life. Overdoses of inappropriate shame and guilt is what I often took from my life experiences from Church.

"You don't read yesterday's newspaper! Why? Because, it's worthless. Then why was it so important yesterday?" This is the perfect example,on how we treat everything, like it's permanent, and how none of it really matters in the long run!

Do you fear people and desire to change? Meditating outloud on the Word of God.(mainly the promises of God and the character of God) daily have done more for me than ANY other spiritual discipline. This is rarely taught in the church today yet so important to developing a renewed mind. Romans 12:2, Psalms 1, Joshua 1:8. I have been doing this for more than a year and the changes in my life have been nothing short of awesome. We MUST get the Word into our heart if we are going to see long lasting change in our life. Good bible teaching allows the Word to enter our minds but meditating gets it permanently rooted into our heart.

You have to teach your kids looks don't matter, clothes don't matter, money doesn't matter, only God does. This will break the patterns. I have seen hate, and hate at its finest. As a kid growing up I thought I was in hell. I told myself growing up if I went to hell it will be a walk in a park for me. Hell would be a great place to be then here no way hell an be worse then this. My family hated me everyone in school hated me. Even people in the town hated me. Walk to school and be at school and home and hear yourself called every bad name in the dictionary put in everyway. I learned words I never knew in hate. I got so stubborn and hard headed no one could tell me nothing. I walked my own walk, talked my own talk, dressed my own dress, acted my own act. I talked to people others wouldn't. It also caused me to grow anger, rage, and a temper that it got to a point that just saying something I would snap and try to hurt someone. Now I rather be alone, I want nothing but quietness away from people I don't trust no one and have no friends. And still learning people play games. I learned to be able to see things in people by just looking at a person's face and eyes.

Salam( peace). I am a practicing Muslim and have this clip as my regular reminder for last 5 or six years. Everything the pastor says is matching to my islamic values (except obvious differences about divinity) However i never came across any Muslim scholar ( i hear a lot of them) described this common illness against faith in God so beautifully and eloquently. It made me a better servant of God/Allah. I am so lucky that i came across this and religious pastor like him exist and serving the common humanity for the greater good.

Don't get so wrapped up on whether or not the "letter" is true that you miss getting free from being a People Pleaser/Human Yes Man. Did you question the people who wanted you to do all those things that you didn't like doing?No.. See! You did learn something already. Question others sometimes when it doesn't seem right instead of just going along. Looks like we are off to a good start.

Emja10 I am with you and like you. In fact I often get in trouble because my no means no (and my yes means yes). I often feel the pressure to conform and be a people pleaser just for peace but it becomes so stressful and affects my health and happiness. I'm by no means a narcissist but I've always known exactly who I am and what I want from a very young age. I never bowed to peer pressure as a teen and went against my parents choice of career and spouse because I am my authentic self at all times. I'm not perfect but I've never needed peoples approval to make decisions in my life, as long as it's ok with God then I'm satisfied.

    1. selfish desires could be the reason why people try to push us to do things we don't like to do. To begin with, we have to clean our hearts from selfish desires not only this but also disguise these materialistic desires and move forward towards God's will and plan for us so no one or situation would push us to do these desires. It is so serious as in the bible it is said we are judged according to our thoughts, words as well as our action.

I've had this tortuous problem all my life and I am finally allowing Jesus to take this specific bondage away and deliver me. With that said if we as Christians have a responsibility to love others, do we have to like/associate ourselves with them? Like sure I understand we are in a spiritual warfare and are trying to bring others to Christ but doesn't loving someone and liking someone mean 2 different things? Billy Graham once said loving is doing. I mean I ain't just going to associate myself with a Fidel Castro or a Hitler. I'm just confused. Ever since I was born again in Christ Jesus I had a reborn sense of loving others. But when I started going to a Texas A and M college I'd realize I'd let others opinions, the fears dominate me my sophmore, Junior, and some of my senior year. Can someone help me understand the Biblical question of differences between loving others and liking others. Do I have to like others even though I have to love them as a Christian? I'm trying to stop being the "nice guy" or pushover or people pleaser that others have seen me here at college and all my life
