Im a South Korean. I knew an older gentleman, a Korean War veteran, who escaped thru Russia. He was a border officer stationed near Russia, and somehow fell in love with a Russian girl named Sofia or Sophia, who knew how to speak Chinese. Song also knew how to speak in Chinese, so that's how they communicated. He died many years ago, so I have no idea how the two even got into contacts, but the two escaped. He basically told his men to get an early night's sleep and that there would be no late night guard duty that day. However, there were other men who were under the supervision of other officers who had not given similar orders. With his own men out of the way, he took a mad dash towards Russia, and eventually got there undetected. He threw away his pistol and went to the place where his girlfriend marked on a map which was her house. She convinced her family that he was her boyfriend from China(she went to a Chinese university to study architecture), and gave him a fake Chinese passport another Russian managed to source. The Russian man who did all this found out about Song's real identity and decided to help out. He decided not to report him. The only problem was his uniform, the only piece of clothing he had. Thankfully, North Korean uniforms during that era looked very similar to Chinese uniforms(at least the color and style). However, in Russian flea markets, people sell old military badges and pins ranging from Chinese, Japanese, Nazi German, Russian, etc. This is how they sourced a Chinese badge and pinned it on his chest to make it seem like he was wearing a Chinese uniform. I still don't get why they couldn't have bought him normal clothes, but moving on. We gotta know that this was during the era of Soviet Union and the girl and her family wasn't rich. So, when they sourced a South Korean missionary in Russia, teaching Protestantism to Eastern Orthodox people, he agreed to take Song to South Korea. After contacting some people, he was able to go to South Korea. A few years later, his girlfriend came to live with him. She was able to track him down by tracking down the missionary who guided her to his church group. There, they settled in Busan and he was able to join the South Korean military. He converted to Christianity and retired as a priest in a small church, where my parents met him. He actually gave me his hat. His uniform and peaked cap was shredded to rags, but he somehow kept his field cap clean the whole time.

I follow Yeonmi Park's channel on YT. I also purchased both of her books, In Order to Live and While Time Remains. Her escape from North Korea with her mother is nothing short of a miracle and horrific as to what followed. A recent abdominal surgery, Yalu river crossing in winter, on to the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, into China, sold as a wife. She was 13. She and her mother eventually made it to South Korea and the U.S. It took years to find her sister. Her father didn't make it. He died in North Korea from misdiagnosed stomach cancer. One of her videos a year ago dealt with a defector who made it to China. He was captured. The video is titled: North Korean Defector Who Escaped Chinese Prison Recaptured and Fatally Shot By The CCP. I would post the link but that never works on YT. Comments with links are always deleted.

Unfortunately it's practically impossible right now to escape from North Korea. The borders across China, Russia, South Korea and even the coasts are heavily guarded now. If you see statistics, you will see that in 2021 and 2022 only 50 people approximately managed to escape. The insanity of this dictatorship only gets worse and worse and we say it couldn't get any more. I can assure you it can.

There are some who want unification here and some who don't, but I think before that, Kim's dynasty should end and someone reasonable should emerge there and take power. 6:18 At the right part of it, it is the photo of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, not theirs. 11:46 It's East Sea, not Sea of Japan.

Do you believe China would allow this? After all, if the Republic of Korea doubled its territory its power would certainly skyrocket, and with USA as an ally, the Republic of China would feel unbearably threatened. The Kim dynasty is self proclaimed and annoying for anyone else in the world, but whatever comes next is likely either another dictatorship or chaos with nuclear weapons.

Because they admit, that North Koreans are in prison, any North Korean who manages, to escape gets the upmost treatment, from wherever allied country welcomes them… …but since the U.S. totally denies “modern-slavery,” & those who want nothing more, than an escape route, not only are “modern-slaves,” not allowed to leave, for that reason, but minorities are also forced to stay, in the U.S. under the false pretenses, that refute claims of having been born, into “modern-slavery” solely for sake, of balancing Americas debt, to the labor industry around the world, post having deprived other nations, of labor forces via “abolishing slavery!” #PropagandaShouldntBeASecretDisserviceToExaggerateNorthKoreanWarCrimesMiddleEasternWarCrimesRussianWarCrimesAndOrToUnderstateTheWarCrimesWithinTheUnitedStates

I sure hope that they never reunite. South Korea will become like the North. I have no memory of my birthplace as I was adopted when I was a baby but I hope to one day fly to Seoul. A reunification of the countries would probably make that impossible. I do not see S. Korea withstanding the onslaught of N. Korea's dictatorship. It's not like the former East Germany where the USSR collapsed and lost control of the countries behind the Iron Curtain in 1989. I was a senior in high school when the Berlin Wall came down. Reintergrating the East and West has taken decades in the making but East Germany has never had a dictator in control of the government like N. Korea does. Once they lost the backing of the Soviets, I think E. Germany was open-minded to rapprochement. I don't foresee N. Korea being in that manner. They tried to overrun the S. Koreans during the Korean War, hence why the DMZ was established and is patrolled by S. Korean and American soldiers. I'm half Korean and half American born in the 1970s, so even after the Korean War, US troops were present in S. Korea. Unfortunately, I just don't see reunification being possible.

I've done research of my own on this subject bcuz it bothers me so much and I feel compelled to make a correction to some of the info Be Amazed has shared regarding the 'upper class' or 'elite' citizens, which is mostly government and military officials... First of all, the info shared here is really well researched and conveyed with accuracy and attention to detail so this is not a criticism at all, but, rather, an addition to the information that's been provided. So, that said I read an article about several soldiers that were able to defect to South Korea, one being the man who drove the vehicle across the DMZ, and after they were all given check-ups the doctors doing the exams noted that every single one of them was not only malnourished but had tapeworms!! And I mean, multiple tapeworms that were each easily 2' in length. Even the elite class are starving and, in fact, the military is expected to grow their own food bcuz the government doesn't have enough resources to provide it for them! So, when the soldiers' gardens aren't producing, they steal food from the civilians, which is always at gunpoint. Further, there is an enormous number of orphans that are left to survive on the streets bcuz the "Kim Dynasty" are such a bunch of evil, selfish monsters that they won't even spend the money to build orphanages. A journalist had snuck in a button camera to document the human rights violations and saw a little boy attempting to use a plastic bag to gather up dirty gutter water and the journalist stopped the boy, trying to explain that the dirty water would make him sick. The little boy became furious with the journalist, pulled away from him, and guzzled the water bcuz it was, literally, the only water there was to drink. There's no plumbing or running water available to civilians! Which also means that it's extremely likely that most of the population also suffers from tapeworms on top of the malnutrition. The UN is supposed to prevent these types of human rights violations, however, any decision to act must be approved by a unanimous vote by the Top Five Countries, namely the USA, the UK, France, Russia, and China and since China is an ally of N.Korea there's never a unanimous vote to intervene! Stupid? Very!! Regardless, this kind of thing can't be allowed to continue any more than Human Trafficking should be allowed, yet, we stand by and let it happen.

The dumb thing is, he could earn the Nobel Peace Prize by facilitating unification with South Korea, disarming his nuclear weapons, and solving poverty and hunger. But instead he chooses to be a dictator threatening the West and their allies. Almost like he's just a pawn/proxy for China.

There is nothing in this video that they don't already know about. The easiest way is still to find any way to leave and then simply disappear. The problem is that if you really are that high profile, China looks the other way in allowing operatives from North Korea to operate and hunt down the highest profile defectors. So you are either caught by China and sent back (if lucky) or simply meet a bad ending, usually by poisoning or being kidnapped and shot somewhere else. So it's not that there have been less people using the underground railroad so much as most of them simply are never found again/don't make it TO the embassy and we don't hear about it. There could be 2000 people hiding a mile from the South Korean embassy but it's so heavily patrolled that it might as well be a thousand miles. Hence their trying other embassies or going to odd places out of the country. With mixed but still higher than average results.

@@gizimizi1144 The stories you hear from friends in the South Korean communities, while certainly exaggerated a bit, are nonetheless shockingly accurate in places to what was in the video. China doesn't put walls on the borders because they already have systems to reward citizens for turning in people who are acting against the government's wishes. Every laptop and computer is hacked and scanned, every communication as well. It's natural for them to expand this cultural surveillance program into catching North Koreans and most of the citizens are all too happy with cashing in on a few rewards. Such that the numbers have dropped to a few hundred a year.
