How To Enter The Flow State At Will

In this video we explore how to enter a mysterious state of optimum performance we call "Flow". The flow state was identified and named by one of the founding fathers of positive psychology, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Further research is being conducted by Steven Kotler, Jamie Wheal and team at The Flow Genome Project. I also explore how we can get many of the benefits of flow in our day to day lives through presence and a playful, autotelic personality

    Flow state is important knowledge yet it falls way short compared to principles that relate to self knowledge like Gratitude. Quadrant Life Management is important to know what to do to make a meaningfull change. After that learn skills like flow state to use it in the right direction.

    NO IT SHOULD NOT BE ROUTINELY TAUGHT. The US has an epidemic of mental illness. People who have problems due to trauma or substance abuse / alcohol abuse / process abuse (such as gambling to excess, pursuing sport to the point of this interfering with one's life, etc) probably are familiar with disassociative states. People who have ADHD and who have a problem with hyperfocusing can easily label their behavior as 'flow'. THIS SORT OF TRAINING IS APPROPRIATE FOR PSYCHOLOGICALLY HEALTHY ADULTS OVER 25, WHO HAVE A FULLY MATURE, HEALTHY ADULT BRAIN. This means that the ways to obtain the flow state at will should only be taught by an experienced, mature adult who understands the risks of this training, who can provide appropriate guidance, who can identify people who this training has the potential of being harmful.

    Flow state can be annoying because it could happen suddenly and then you do nothing but one thing important or not for as long as you can go without somebody budding in because a flow state is near impossible to escape from because you don’t realize you are in a flow state because you are thinking and are just acting purely off instincts that have been developing since the beginning of time and you develop more instincts the more you do one thing...aaaaand I just went into a flow state....

    A few days ago I did a meditation using binaural beats. After I was done, I found myself in the deepest, strongest flow state I’ve ever experienced. It lasted for 8 hours and persisted all the way up until I slept that night. Flow states are usually very fragile, but NOTHING could shake me out of this. I’d never felt so happy in my life. Was that a preview of enlightenment? I think it may have been. Now my every moment is dedicated to getting back there.

  • @AlexShailer

    @AlexShailer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well, enlightenment isn't a state. As I understand it, it's the recognition of our essential self as the aware spaciousness out of which our experience arises. The recognition of your true self beyond the separate sense of self. What you experienced was a particular state that could be put under the umbrella as flow. However what links them, is that in both cases, there's a recognition of oneself beyond the thinking person entity, a connectedness with the 'happening'. But you don't have to be in 'flow' to recognize that. You can try to recreate a particular state, and that can be helpful. But don't try to 'get' to enlightenment because self-realization isn't a state. It's more akin to the end of something, or the recognition of your true self.

  • @swinnyuk6584

    @swinnyuk6584

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@AlexShailer The reason I said that it may have been a preview of enlightenment is that there was no me, which is, I think, the reason why my flow couldn’t be broken. I couldn’t talk, either. I had this “resistance”(for lack of a better word) to thinking at all. To my surprise, I could fully understand what was going on around me, as well as follow what people were saying, without the mind. It was an intelligence beyond the mind, and that’s not really something that can be spoken about.

    Certain people don’t want us to discover this natural skill so they put things in our way that’s why this isn’t taught. For those of you who think you can’t do this skill be healthy and better yourself constantly. You have to feel for the thing that you are doing, that thing is now part of you. However this is not the case for everything you may not want to do work (say you don’t like writing) you have to find/make a reason to do that thing. One other thing for me if I’m facing someone less skilled than me it is almost impossible to get into flow state because that sort of takes away the reason, like in anime the MC most of the time discovers a new power or skill when facing something greater than them. That last part I thought I would throw in there but everyone works differently so do you👍

    For example, whilst driving, you make a turn, and the car immediately turns. The action you put is immediately fed back to you by the result of it. Obviously all actions have some level of immediate feedback, but some are more or less related to your desired outcome. There's a reason why there's lots of flashing lights and spinning things on a slot machine. It's attempting to keep you engaged with what's going on. Whilst playing an instrument, the feedback is very visceral. Drive your attention deeply into the now by becoming intimate your experience as you're performing your actions, moving your attention into your senses.

    How resting can increase motivation and wellbeing, or an autotelic experience, a simple procedure from affective neuroscience Procedure: Consistent alternation between a resting protocol (e.g. mindfulness) and the pursuit of meaningful behavior will increase motivation and positive affect (arousal and pleasure). Explanation: Resting elicits opioid activity, or feels pleasurable, and meaningful behavior, as defined as behavior that has branching novel and positive outcomes (writing that great novel or just making the bed) elicits dopamine activity which causes arousal. The awareness of subsequent meaningful behavior while engaging in relaxation protocols such as mindfulness elicits a ‘priming’ response, namely dopamine release that increases opioid activity, and vice versa, making meaningful behavior seem self-reinforcing or ‘autotelic’. Although mindfulness reduces discursive thought or mind wandering; it does not inhibit concurrent non-conscious awareness or anticipation of behavior or events subsequent to meditation that can in turn shape or ‘prime’ affective responses during a meditative session. A priming response, like the salivary response that precedes food or the sexual arousal that precedes intimacy, is a preparatory response that often occurs non-consciously, and changes the affective value or ‘feeling’ in the moment. Similarly, relaxing due to ‘being in the moment’ is pleasurable, but if we were told to expect ‘bad’ news or ‘good’ news in the near future, just the awareness of future events is enough to depress or elevate our feelings, but not altering in the slightest our ‘mindful’ or relaxed state. It follows that if mindfulness is paired with the awareness of subsequent positive or meaningful behavior, then rest in mindfulness will have a greater affective tone or ‘feel better’ than if such a prospect was absent. This is perhaps why ‘savoring’, ‘loving kindness’ meditation, and ‘flow’ experiences represent highly pleasurable and arousing experiences that map positive ideation to relaxed states and contrast with a lower level of pleasure during typical states of rest that generally precede a return to meaningless discursive thinking. The essentials of my argument are on pp.25-28 and pp.45-53 of my linked book on the psychology of rest.
