How to Engrave Wood with the Cricut Maker

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have had people asking me for some time about engraving wood with the Cricut Maker. I finally had a chance to sit down and perfect a method for you. And I must say that I am loving the results. I used the engraving tip along with the knife blade to make some wood earrings and they turned out really great. Grab your supplies and craft along with me cause you are going to want to try this technique.

Would you recommend to cut the pieces after engraving, so through the engraved/stained design, or cut the outer and inner parts first and then engrave/stain? Hello Angie!! I love all of your videos. I have a question. Have you tried engraving on glass with your Cricut maker? I have been looking for a video but haven't come across any yet? How thick or thin should the sheet of glass be? I have done freehand engraving on glass but haven't tried my Cricut engraving on glass. I print the image on paper then use carbon paper under the paper image and trace it to the glass. Before engraving, I used clear tape on the image and engraved it thru it to prevent glass shavings from going everywhere. Would that work on the Cricut too? I have another question too. How do you get your Cricut to go over a design so many times? When cutting vinyl as a stencil, why does the Cricut not cut all the way thru the vinyl? I did multiple passes and never did get it to go all the way thru it so it was easier to weed. I used the fine knife blade attachment on that project.

    You do need the tip and a QuickSwap housing. The housing is the same as the scoring wheel, deboss, wavy, and perf tips. So if you a housing for one of those it is the same. Let me look around and see if I can update the description with more options for purchasing!

    No you cannot. You are limited to a maximum thickness of 2.4 mm. A Glow Forge is the machine you are looking for when talking about engraving super thick things like that.

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've spent so much on tools and wood and aluminum. I can't get anything to come out good. Cricut support has replaced my engraving tool twice. They sent me aluminum sheets that are not cutting through. Basswood doesn't engrave, it's chipping. Can't cut through the wood and it's 1/16. I've contemplated returning it and selling all my material at last 4 times this week. Idk what I'm doing wrong....

  • @AngieHolden

    You cannot cut the aluminum sheets with your machine only engrave on them. You can cut and engrave thin wood but keep in mind this machine is slow and will take some tweaking to get setting right for these types of materials. If you want clean cuts and engraving lines, investing in a laser is the way to go.

    @AngieHolden I just bought 1/32 cricut brand basswood from Michael's and although it's not chipping away the way the wood sheets I got from Amazon, I wasn't able to even choose wood as an option to engrave it. I had to try to cheat it and chose leather. It's quite frustrating. But, I'm so deep I the $$ hole and I have a show this Saturday. I hope I can turn out at least a few pairs of earrings. It's been running for over an hr, here's hoping and praying it works

    I show how to cheat the system in this video for engraving. The Cricut brand of wood definitely cuts the best. The others can be frustrating. There is nothing you can really do however. It is just how the Cricut cuts that material.

    So, this vid is a couple of years old now, though it's my first time watching. I notice the cut from the blade is so much cleaner than the engraving tip. The cut needs 15-16 passes. What if you did the engraving with the blade but stopped it after 2-3 cuts? Would the blade tip engrave better than the engrave tip? What obvious thing am I missing?

  • @AngieHolden

    @AngieHolden

    Yes that could work. However, you can't choose which lines will only do a few passes. They will all do the same if they are cut lines.
