2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 Fiat 500L
First time to do an oil change on my neighbors 2014 Fiat 500L. I have never worked on a Fiat. It was the most difficult oil change i ever did. It's not easy as i thought.
Sorry i did not show how to reset the oil light. It's very easy to do. So here is the procedure.
1. Turn the ignition to ON. Do not start the engine.
2. Slowly press the accelerator pedal all the way down three times within 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition to the OFF position.
4. Now start the engine and the oil maintenance light will be reset.

I have a few tips for you incase you ever plan on doing this madness ever again. First take off the oil cap before draining it. It helps the flow. 2nd do the filter after you drain it because that will prevent oil from spilling out of the housing, since it retains oil. On some mercedes if you do the filter 1st, you will retain over 1 at of oil in the system. And lastly, loosen the filter from the top by reaching underneath the turbo inlet and placing 27mm on the housing, then in the radiator support there is a hole where you can fit a 1-2 ft extension into. Once its loose enough you can just grab the filter out from the bottom. This eliminates having to take off the turbo inlet which sometimes have a one time use clamp on it. And also those inlets can tear causing a vacuum leak if you take them off and put them on too many times. I enjoyed the video. Loved the fart. Cheers

Insane what it takes to change the oil on a Fiat 500. I couldn’t even get the drain plug off yesterday. Wound up purchasing a bolt extractor. Today I’m battling with the oil filter. Can’t believe what has to be removed to get it through that narrow space. I finally gave up. Back to it tomorrow after watching a few KZread videos. Mine is an Abarth. Thanks for the entertaining and certainly patient job in demonstrating your method.

i have a 3.6 journey and the oil filter is on top easy to get to, man i was cringing when he tightened that down so tight as the plastic caps are bad to break or the threads on the side of the oil cooler will crack the side open, i just tighten down as tight as i can by hand and then just a bump on the socket, but as i said mine is so easy to do and then check it after running it for a bit for a leak....Angel you are the man, love to watch you work

Changing the OIL on this car is easy. It is changing the OIL FILTER that is hard. BITOG has some decent info that suggests that a Fram Ultra filter could easily go 25k miles (or more) between changes. Personally (assuming I'm dumb enough to own this car in the first place) I'd just change the oil every 10k miles and change the filter every 30k miles. A Fumoto oil drain valve with a short clear tube would help the drain as well.

I'm here a bit late :) Great vid. Saabs are just about as bad with the oil filter placement and draining over the support beam. You can wrap a sheet of aluminum foil around the support beam and shape a crude alleyway for the oil to flow into. It will keep the support clean and run the oil right into the pan :) Liked and subbed!

I own this car in black. It only takes 20 minutes to change my oil. You have to get the filter from the bottom. I use a short handle ratchet with 2 degree detents and a 27mm oil filter socket. Once you feel for it and get it on there, you just slowly click away until you can twist it by hand. I use a vacuum pump to get the oil out of the engine, and put the new filter on the plastic cap with a new o-ring and reverse the process. 4 quarts of Pennzoil euro 5w-40 and you're ready to go. Did I mention it took 4 hours on the first time to figure it out!? It's impossible to do the filter from the top. Don't even try.

FOR THE LOVE OF PEAT! ACCESS THE FILTER FROM BELOW THE CAR! Thanks for going through the work of putting this video up, it helped me get somewhat familiar with what's under the bonnet on this car before I worked my used one for the first time. But can you please amend the video, or pin a comment to the top that indicates to people that rather than dismantling their air filer box and hoses to access the filter from above, as you've done here, that they can simply use the same socket and flex-head wrench to access the filter housing from underneath. This is a five minute job, and bloody easy. If you like to change your oil, but the thought of all these extra steps puts you off (it did me) there's incredibly good news for you!

Tip for anyone looking for help changing their oil on the 500L. Instead of removing everything shown in the video. Ubolt the air box cover and remove attached hoses, twist the cover upside down and bend it out of the way, with long extensions you’ll be able to reach down remove the oil filter with minimal disassembly. Wobble extensions work best! (2/3 depending on length). These cars are horribly designed but if your looking to save some time try this^

They have those paper to canister adapters for oil filters and you could throw on an oil relocater. That would make the oil change significantly easier and you'd just be using a regular filter.

Dang what a PITA to do. If I owned it I’d replace that drain plug with the Fumoto type where you can attach a hose and direct the flow. The oil filter location doesn’t make sense, I wonder if it’s like that for all models or unique to the L because of under hood layout. Nice video.

I hated doing the oil change factory way. I upgraded to a cold air intake and quick release hose clamps. Also I upgraded the oil filter housing to aluminum and no more stripped head because having shops change the oil they rounded the hex head 4 times costing me 40 bucks each time to replace the housing hmm that should be their cost. I also use a powered ratchet. But anyways if you already own one of these thats a time solution and money is time. Suggestion loosen housing don't remove until you drain oil first.. The paste is also was a good tip BTW. As for the dreaded crossbar i just slid a long funnel with wide open end and let the bolt fall no more splashing mess. If anyone wants pics not sure how you can communicate that through KZread. Or Avoid getting this vehicle bow that they stopped making them for US. I have 2014

No it is not an afterthought. In the regular body 500, you can use a swivel ratchet through a space in the headlight to get it off. It's very easy. This car, by design, gives you full-size vehicle room in a subcompact package, so somethings are different. It's wonderful to drive, if not quirky. I perform all of my own maintenance and it takes 20 minutes to change the oil.

Not sure if this would apply to the 500L, but on the 500 there was a hole right by the headlight unit that would yield acess to fit an extension to reach into the oil filter cap.

Great video. I ended up taking mine to a shop. I didn’t have all the tools. Just wondering if your check engine light came on after a day or two after the change? I also used an STP filter and my check light came on. I had the shop redo the oil and swapped the filter with a MOPAR filter and had no issues after.

I make a little temporary "gutter" out of aluminum foil anytime it's going to splash on something like that. A medium piece of heavy duty foil or regular doubled over strategically placed can save a lot of mess!
