How to Enamel: Experimenting with Blue over Yellow and Apricot

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is an experiment to see if we can get warmer blues by using pale yellow and apricot as a base. Pale yellow has a greenish tinge and apricot has a very orange tinge...marigold or a golden yellow enamel would also be options for anyone wanting to experiment with this themselves.
You could also try experimenting with how transparent blues might work over opaque yellows.
I always try to get my students to do loads of experimentation - it is worth it for loads of reasons, the main reason being cost. If you make a mess of a piece of metal (especially precious metals) because you didn't experiment on offcuts, it is a waste of money...as well as a frustrating waste of time.
So, get a nice cup of tea or coffee and settle down to do some enamelling samples - and make sure to take notes. I can guarantee you'll forget what you did within minutes otherwise!

At first i favoured the yellow one, but after the second coat of blue on the apricot it was completely transformed. Wonderful. Your vids have been very helpful to me. Especially the note keeping. Just waiting on my first delivery of materials today. Gonna start with torch firing first and then hopefully invest in a small kiln.

That's great - very exciting to get started with your new materials. Yes, start with a torch and then move on to the kiln. You can get small kilns for relatively cheap (as far as kilns go...). I will do a torch firing experiment as well. I think I told you I would ages ago but I got busy and distracted with other things. But it is now on my list...
