Awesome video thank you!!! I don't understand why people say mice and rats smell bad. I use Aspen bedding and clean once a week and there pretty much no smell except a day or two before cleaning.

Sometimes the more you clean the faster they mark(pee) to be familiar with their surroundings. If you use the kiln dried pine it will help lengthen the amount of days between. Also sometimes can help to put a handful of old bedding in with the new so it has familiar smells and they dont feel the need to do extra territory marking.

Thanks for the tips with the air purifier. I have pet rats so its not much of an issue on a lot of smell from them but i also have ferrets and it will help with the extra odor in the litter box before i get to changing it twice a day. Yes ferrets are a lot of work but well worth it for the fun 🙂🐾

When I first got my rats at the beginning of the month I had them on Oxbow food, and their tubs smelled really bad. Ever since I started feeding Mazuri it has really cut down on the smell, and they seem to love it.

I actually forgot to mention the food, the Mazuri has additives that cuts down on the smell, I think it may be Yucca root?

Breeding your own feeders is definitely cost saving but man is it a pain in the butt! I don’t know how you go so long without bedding changes. I never used that food and maybe it does make a huge difference.

Do you notice any difference between Fir (with short needles)🌲 and Pine (with long needles) ? What do you think about shredded Hemp? I love that product, no dust what so ever, eliminates smells too! But a bit expensive. Otherwise you can get saw cuttings from leaf trees 🌳 since those don’t have any terpenoids in them.

I'll have to try that air filter thing. Definitely couldn't hurt. And yes the mice smell a lot more than the rats. It's strange because the mice keep themselves physically cleaner than the rats.

An old trick my buddy has done for years too is put like one scoop of the pine pellets in first then put the pine shavings over top that. It helps absorb more urine and keeps smell down but they don't have to walk on it

When I was a kid me and my sister both had a mouse and looking back I think they were 2 males because they were veryyyy stinky and sometimes fought. One even killed the other one and ate his head. I found the clean eaten skull detached from the body.

Oxbow isn't the best food, you may want to switch over to mazuri, as well as hemp or aspen bedding

My son snake refused to eat a 3 week old rat a few months ago. My husband and I fell for her and went out got her the double critter nation cage and a couple more feeder rat friends. They are 99% litter boxed trained and I change all the fleece and the two litter boxes every week. I do live in CO where can I pick up this pine bedding? Also my rats have seen a vet for URI's, lice and one with a pneumonia since I've gotten them a couple months ago(got them sick :(..). I'm currently using paper pellets and someone was telling me the baking soda in it is bad for rats.. My rats are extra sensitive and trying to find the right bedding and keep down on the smells since they are in my living room. I wash all their hammocks and beds weekly. I just don't know what else I can do. I feed them oxbow so don't think its the food.

I would switch to Mazuri 6F rodent blocks and pine shavings, you can get them both at Walkers Cage and Feed.

Pine is no good for rats if they are your pets and you fell for them you don’t want to give them unsafe bedding that will cause respiratory infections.

@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures I have never bred them before. But I have worked in a facility that had them in one room and rats in another. Cleaning day was weird lol the rats would be on the edge of burn your eyes and thr asf where just beginning to stink.

For rats you can keep males together but not with mice.

For my mice I usually clean every 4 days or so, my rats are pretty much once a week. I you really pack them full of rodents you may need to clean every other day, if you keep only one or two rodents in a big tub maybe every 7-8 days. If they start getting stinky I change them out LOL

The stuff from tractor supply is labeled as kiln dried. You shouldn't have any issues.

Bruh for my other half and kids. It started with a dog, then a cat then bird then tortoises then more turtles then chickens then a damn baby deer then Guinea pig then random insect terrarium then chameleons then fish now fucken mice! My property is a small ass zoo already haha.. HELP 😵😂.. BTW I pay for the maintenance and upkeep of all these fucken animals

I would actually keep them together until you don't see them nursing anymore. I find if I separate mice or rats too early they do very poorly, best to keep them nursing as long as possible.

Male mice can never be together, even if they grow up in the same litter. But I find most male rats are fine together, but you do get the occasional exception.

1. Feed good food mazuri 6f. A balanced diet keeps the smell down. 2. I have heard vanilla in the water helps fight the smell 3. Inline fan (proper cfm for your room) feeding to a carbon filter inside the room. 4. Studies I have read recently say Aspen is the best the best bedding even though dried corn cob cuts down the smell.

I think Aspen bedding would be ideal, but I can't seem to find it at an affordable cost for as many tubs as I have.

@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures I use concrete tubs and spend 29.00 a bag for 8 cubic foot of Aspen. I was going to switch over to corn cob (3.99 a 50lb bag) but I found two different research studies talking about their preferences of Aspen over corn cob and the fact corn cob negativity effects their sleep. Even with using two big bags of Aspen (29.00) and 2 bags of mazuri rodent breeder (29.99) i still spend less a month then buying feeders.

Usually when I find a dead one it's been dead long enough to smell really bad, I just want it out of the house LOL.
MY MALE RATS CAN NEVER BE PUT TOGETHER, THEY FIGHT LIKE CRAZY.

Male mice can never be together, even if they grow up in the same litter. But I find most male rats are fine together, but you do get the occasional exception.

be careful with incense and air freshener most are bad for rodents respiratory system

Sometimes the more you clean the faster they mark(pee) to be familiar with their surroundings. If you use the kiln dried pine it will help lengthen the amount of days between. Also sometimes can help to put a handful of old bedding in with the new so it has familiar smells and they dont feel the need to do extra territory marking.

1. Feed good food mazuri 6f. A balanced diet keeps the smell down. 2. I have heard vanilla in the water helps fight the smell 3. Inline fan (proper cfm for your room) feeding to a carbon filter inside the room. 4. Studies I have read recently say Aspen is the best the best bedding even though dried corn cob cuts down the smell.

I think Aspen bedding would be ideal, but I can't seem to find it at an affordable cost for as many tubs as I have.

@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures I use concrete tubs and spend 29.00 a bag for 8 cubic foot of Aspen. I was going to switch over to corn cob (3.99 a 50lb bag) but I found two different research studies talking about their preferences of Aspen over corn cob and the fact corn cob negativity effects their sleep. Even with using two big bags of Aspen (29.00) and 2 bags of mazuri rodent breeder (29.99) i still spend less a month then buying feeders.

@@chasingthefish9042 Totally get this is an old comment, but another reason not to use the corn cob is that it is more prone to molding.
